ChatGPT vs Perplexity (2026): Which Is Better for Professionals?
ChatGPT vs Perplexity in 2026: Perplexity Pro is $17 a month billed annually, ChatGPT Plus is $20. Perplexity wins sourced answers, ChatGPT drafts and Codex.

Pick Perplexity Pro at $17 a month billed annually when you need a sourced answer and a choice of models. Pick Max at $200 a month for GPT-5.6 Sol or Claude Opus 5. Pick ChatGPT Plus for drafts, images, and Codex. Go at $8 a month sits between Free and Plus.
Perplexity is the app you open when a colleague has to click the source. ChatGPT is the app you open when the output is a draft, a file, an image, voice, or code you will ship. Toolradar data: the AI assistants ranking we publish evaluated 1,559 tools, updated October 2026, and that ranking names ChatGPT the overall pick. That rank is the general-work pick, not a sourced-answer win, and the records are ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Prices below were checked on 14 October 2026 on OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing page, Perplexity's pricing hub, and Perplexity's Max, models, plan-compare, credits, and Enterprise billing articles. Our ChatGPT review and Perplexity review cover each product alone. A three-way take with Claude, written for a different audience, is on Dupple.
At a glance
| Question | ChatGPT | Perplexity | Who wins |

| Everyday job | Draft, image, voice, or code in one app | A cited answer from the live web | Split by the work product |
| Free plan | Unlimited text chats subject to abuse guardrails, with limits on uploads, images, voice, and deep research | Best picks the model. 3 Pro searches a day | ChatGPT, if you chat all day |
| Model choice on the main paid plan | GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on Plus, per OpenAI's pricing page | A picker across several labs. No GPT-5.6 Sol and no Claude Opus 5 | Perplexity, if you want to switch labs |
| Flagship reasoning | GPT-6 Astra, with Plus estimated at 5 to 45 local messages per five hours | GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5, on Max | Split: different flagships, both gated |
| Citations | Web search is available. Answers are not built as a source list | Citations on every answer. Pro lists 10x the web answers | Perplexity |
| Making files and images | Image creation, voice, projects, scheduled tasks | Create files and apps, with plan limits. Image generation starts on Pro | ChatGPT for images and voice |
| Coding agent | Codex on the web, in the CLI and in the IDE, from Plus up | Computer, billed in credits | ChatGPT, unless the task is a researched report |
| Training on your chats | Off by default on Business | Opt out on Pro and Max. Off by default on Enterprise | Tie, once you are on a team plan |
| Annual discount for one person | OpenAI lists Go, Plus, and Pro at monthly prices only | Pro lists an annual rate. Max annual is web-only | Perplexity |
An assistant here is the app you open to finish a work task. A search product here is the app you open when the answer has to point at a page. Most professionals need both jobs, and these two products refuse to be the same app, so the subscription is a bet on the daily job.
What you actually pay
| Plan | Price (USD, October 2026) | What changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free | $0 | Unlimited text chats subject to abuse guardrails, tight limits on uploads, images, voice, and deep research |
| ChatGPT Go | $8/month | More uploads, images, and memory than Free. May include ads |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20/month | GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, Codex on the web, in the CLI and in the IDE, expanded images, deep research, projects |
| ChatGPT Pro | From $100/month | Three plans, and only the $500 plan includes Ultrafast |
| ChatGPT Business, standard | $25/user/month, or $20 annual | Two-seat minimum. No training on business data by default |
| Perplexity Free | $0 | Citations, basic models, 3 Pro searches a day, 1 research query a month |
| Perplexity Pro | $17/month billed annually | Model picker, deep research, image generation. Weekly Computer usage, no monthly credits |
| Perplexity Max | $200/month, or $2,000/year on the web | GPT-5.6 Sol, Claude Opus 5, 10,000 Computer credits a month |
| Perplexity Enterprise Pro | $40/seat/month, or $400/seat/year | Data is never used for training. No self-serve trial |
| Perplexity Enterprise Max | $325/seat/month, or $3,250/seat/year | Highest published search limits, and 15 videos a month |
The two plans most people buy are close in price: Perplexity lists Pro at $17 a month billed annually, and ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. OpenAI's pricing page lists Go, Plus, and Pro at monthly prices only. Perplexity Max has an annual price, $2,000 for the year, and only if you check out on the web, so a checkout off the web misses the discount.
ChatGPT Pro has three monthly plans, at $100, $200 and $500, and OpenAI's pricing page says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. Only the $500 plan lists Ultrafast mode.
Go sits between Free and Plus. It is worth paying when Free's image and file caps are the problem, and it does not include what Plus lists, such as Codex on the web, in the CLI and in the IDE.
The API is a separate meter from every plan above, so a call from your own app is not covered by Plus or Pro, and the ladder is in ChatGPT pricing. If the shortlist is wider than these two, start with best AI chatbots and best AI search engines.
Cited answers are Perplexity's job
Perplexity wins when the sentence has to survive a click. The free plan returns citations on every answer, and Perplexity's pricing page lists 10x the web answers on Pro. Free is still a small allowance of the good mode: 3 Pro searches a day and 1 research query a month, and it turns off advanced models, image generation, and the Comet browser agent. A few claims a day can stay free, and a full day of sourcing spends that allowance.
ChatGPT can search the web, and OpenAI lists expanded deep research on Plus, but the product is not organized as a source list you audit line by line. For a founder checking a competitor claim, or a marketer checking a stat before it goes in a deck, that difference is the product. If a citation is wrong, Perplexity at least gives you the page.
The unpublished cap is the weakness: individual Pro and Max list Pro searches as weekly limits and research as monthly limits, with average use on Pro and advanced use on Max, and they do not publish the count. Enterprise publishes the count: Enterprise Pro is 400 Pro searches a week and 50 research queries a month, and Enterprise Max is 4,000 a week and 500 a month. A team with a quota should price the Enterprise seat rather than hope the consumer plan lasts the week.
Deep Research on Perplexity selects the models for you and aims at a longer report. ChatGPT's deep research allowance is limited on Free and expanded on Plus. Use Perplexity when the deliverable is the report with links, and ChatGPT when the deliverable is what you do with the report afterward.
Drafts, images, and code are ChatGPT's job
ChatGPT wins when the output is something you ship, not a paragraph you verify. Plus adds more complex image creation, voice, projects, scheduled tasks, and expanded Codex. Free already includes image creation, file uploads, and voice, with limits, enough to try and not to rely on. Go raises those tool limits.
Perplexity Pro adds image generation and a limited video tool, and Max extends both, which is enough for a figure inside a research thread and not the same as living in an image and voice product. For a finished asset, see best AI image generators and best AI writing tools.
Codex is the coding reason to stay on ChatGPT. OpenAI's pricing page lists Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension, and on iOS from Plus up, and its usage table estimates Plus at 5 to 45 local messages per five hours on GPT-6 Astra, 15 to 160 on GPT-6.1 Sol, and 350 to 3,000 on GPT-6 Luna. Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. Perplexity's equivalent is Computer, an agent that can research, code, and create documents, and it spends credits rather than a flat chat allowance. A repository belongs with best AI coding assistants, and a task that has to browse and then write a file is the Computer bet, with the credit rules below.
The model you get is not the logo on the app
GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5 are Max only on Perplexity's consumer plans, so the two names people upgrade for are not on the plan that matches Plus. As of Perplexity's 4 September 2026 snapshot, the selector can change, so a model you rely on this week may move. On Pro and Max, both can run Sonar 2, GPT-5.6 Terra, Gemini 3.7 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, Grok 4.6, and Nemotron 3 Ultra.
Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max both get those two, unless an admin turns a provider off. Model Council, which runs several models on one question, is Max and Enterprise Max, and it is web only, so a phone-only subscriber never sees it.
On ChatGPT, OpenAI's pricing page lists GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on Plus, and Free and Go list GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app. OpenAI's usage table gives each model a different allowance, and it says the estimates are not fixed message limits, so check the usage dashboard for current limits and reset times. Gemini vs ChatGPT and Claude vs ChatGPT are the other model bets, and Claude pricing is the bill if Claude is the assistant rather than a model inside Perplexity.
Computer credits run out, and Codex has its own meter
Perplexity Pro's Computer access is a small weekly allowance and a one-time credit bonus, not a monthly credit pool. Consumer Pro has no monthly allocation, but paid Pro plans include a weekly amount of Computer usage, and Perplexity says that is rolling out gradually. New Pro accounts can get 4,000 credits once, and that bonus expires in about 30 days and does not return if you cancel and resubscribe.
After the weekly usage and the bonus are gone, Computer pauses until you buy credits or turn on auto-refill. Purchased credits last until you use them, and they expire if you do not use Computer for one year.
Max includes 10,000 credits a month, plus a one-time 35,000 credit bonus that also expires in about 30 days. Unused monthly credits do not roll over, so a quiet month cannot be banked.
Perplexity's rate is 100 credits to $1, so the monthly Max allowance is $100 of Computer work before extra purchases. The default cap on extra charges on Max is $200, one month of Max, and you can raise it to $5,000. Auto-refill stays off until you turn it on, and it triggers at 500 credits on Pro and 2,500 on Max.
A mobile upgrade can bill you twice: if Pro was bought on the web, upgrade to Max on the web. Upgrading in the mobile app creates a new separate Max subscription beside the Pro plan you already pay.
OpenAI's pricing page says ChatGPT Work and Codex share one usage allowance, and that Plus and Pro users who reach their usage limit can buy additional credits without upgrading. Business, Edu, and Enterprise plans with flexible pricing can buy workspace credits. API token prices are separate from subscription usage. Both products therefore have a credit meter once the included allowance is gone, and the difference is which agent you are paying for.
Comet is off on Perplexity Free, so the browser agent is not a reason to stay unpaid. Enterprise Pro lists 80 Comet queries a month, and Enterprise Max lists 800.

Teams pay for a training default, not a smarter model
Perplexity's Pro, Education Pro, and Max plans offer an opt-out from AI training, and opt-out is not the default, so a personal login still depends on every person finding the setting. The default flips on the team plans: OpenAI says Business does not train on your business data by default, and Perplexity Enterprise says data is never used for model training. You pay the seat for that default, not for a smarter model.
ChatGPT Business is self-serve and starts at two paid seats, so one founder cannot open it to get that default. Standard seats are $25 per user each month, or less on an annual bill. The API is not included, so a product integration is a second bill. Enterprise is contact sales.
Perplexity Enterprise Pro is $40 a seat each month, or $400 a seat for the year, about a 16.7% discount versus monthly. There is no self-serve trial, so you cannot sample that default before the invoice. Removing a person frees the seat and does not lower the invoice until an admin cuts the seat count for the next period. Enterprise Max is for teams that need a published search ceiling.
For two people who write and code, ChatGPT Business is the smaller seat. For a team whose work is cited search, Enterprise Pro costs more per person than ChatGPT's standard seat and matches the job. Neither consumer plan is the right place for customer data or anything under an NDA.
Who should pick which
Pick Perplexity Pro if the workday is questions you must source. Stay on Free if the daily Pro-search allowance covers it. Move to Max for Sol, Opus 5, Model Council, or a monthly Computer allowance, and upgrade on the web so you do not start a second subscription.
Pick ChatGPT Plus if the workday is producing: emails, specs, images, voice, and Codex. Stay on Free if its limits cover the work, and buy Go only for higher tool limits. Buy Pro only if you can name the Plus limit you hit, and treat the usage allowance as the ceiling.
Pick a team plan when customer text is in the thread. Two seats on ChatGPT Business if the team writes and codes, and Perplexity Enterprise Pro if the team searches. An opt-out on a personal plan still depends on every person remembering the setting, which is a weak control for an NDA.
Pick both if you have the two jobs: research in Perplexity, then draft and build in ChatGPT, at the two consumer prices in the table. That pair costs less than guessing wrong on Max or on ChatGPT's Pro plan. If ChatGPT is the wrong fit, read ChatGPT alternatives and how to use ChatGPT. Best AI agents covers the agent layer under Computer and Codex.
How we compared
We read OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing page, plus Perplexity's pricing hub and the help articles on plans, Max, models, credits, and Enterprise billing, on 14 October 2026. Model rows are Perplexity's snapshot of 4 September 2026, and that page says the selector wins if they differ. The 1,559 figure is Toolradar's AI assistants ranking, updated October 2026.
AIpresso data: the audience file refreshed November 8, 2026 shows 29,000+ active subscribers and a 31% average open rate. Louis Corneloup, founder of Toolradar and Dupple, edited the comparison. Ranking method is Toolradar's editorial policy. Check both pricing pages again before you subscribe, because model access moves faster than the seat price.
FAQ
Which is better in 2026, ChatGPT or Perplexity?
Perplexity is the better buy when the work product is a sourced answer, and Max is the upgrade that adds GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5. ChatGPT Plus is the better buy when the work product is a draft, an image, voice, or code in Codex. Free ChatGPT is enough when its limits cover the work. The two main paid plans are close in price, so the job picks the app.
How much do ChatGPT and Perplexity cost in 2026?
ChatGPT Go is $8 a month, Plus is $20 a month, and Pro starts at $100 a month, all listed as monthly prices. OpenAI lists three Pro plans. Business standard seats are $25 per user each month, or less on the annual bill, with a two-seat minimum, so a solo founder cannot buy the training default. Perplexity Pro is $17 a month billed annually, Max is $200 a month or $2,000 a year on the web, Enterprise Pro is $40 a seat each month or $400 a year, and Enterprise Max is $325 a seat each month or $3,250 a year.
Is there a free ChatGPT or a free Perplexity plan?
Yes, both, and neither free plan is the flagship model. ChatGPT Free is $0, with unlimited text chats subject to abuse guardrails and separate limits on uploads, images, voice, and deep research. Perplexity Free includes citations, with 3 Pro searches a day, 1 research query a month, and no advanced model picker, image generation, or Comet, which suits a light day of sourcing and not a full research shift.
Which one is better for research with sources?
Perplexity is the research buy, because citations are on every answer and Pro lists 10x the web answers, so a stat can be checked before it lands in a deck. The catch is the consumer cap: Pro and Max describe weekly and monthly limits without a published count, while Enterprise Pro publishes 400 Pro searches a week and 50 research queries a month. ChatGPT can search and run deep research, and it is the weaker choice when the links have to sit in the answer.
Which one is better for writing and coding?
ChatGPT Plus, for writing you will send and for Codex. OpenAI's pricing page lists Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension, and on iOS from Plus up. Computer on Perplexity Pro has no monthly credits, only a weekly Computer allowance that is still rolling out and a one-time 4,000 credit bonus that expires in about 30 days.
Can a team keep chats out of model training?
Yes, on the team plans, and not as the default on Perplexity's personal plans, so a personal opt-out is a habit rather than a control. ChatGPT Business and Perplexity Enterprise both keep workspace data out of training. Business requires two paid seats. Enterprise Pro has no self-serve trial, and removing a user does not reduce the bill until an admin lowers the seat count for the next period.
Should you pay for Perplexity Max or ChatGPT Pro?
Pay for Max if you want GPT-5.6 Sol or Claude Opus 5 inside Perplexity, Model Council, or 10,000 Computer credits a month. Pay for ChatGPT Pro if Plus limits are already blocking the work, and if the usage allowance is enough for how you actually work. Skip both if you have not hit the ceiling on the two plans that are close in price.
