Claude vs Gemini 2026: Which Should You Choose?

Claude vs Gemini in 2026: plan prices, usage limits, storage, team seats and API costs from both vendors' October 2026 pricing pages, with a clear pick.

Claude vs Gemini 2026: Which Should You Choose?

Short answer: Pick Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $200 billed up front for the year) if coding or long-form work is your main job. Pick Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) if your work already runs in Gmail, Docs and Drive. Both vendors offer a free plan, so start there.

Choosing between Claude and Gemini usually comes down to the bundle you already pay for, not which model is smarter. Both vendors publish their plans on US pricing pages, and every figure below was read on the vendors' pricing pages on October 10, 2026. We also price one person and a five-seat team, because seat counts and billing terms move the totals more than the sticker price does. If you are still comparing the wider field, our guide to the best AI chatbots covers the other options.

What each plan costs

Toolradar data: 85 of the 199 AI assistants we rank on our AI assistants guide have a free plan, so almost half of this category starts at $0. Both vendors' free plans fit that pattern, and the paid step is where the real choice happens.

Claude

Pro is Claude's cheapest paid plan. It costs $20 billed monthly, or $17 a month billed annually at $200 up front. It gives at least five times the Free usage in each five-hour session, and it adds Claude Code, unlimited Projects, Claude in Chrome and Claude in Microsoft 365. Max starts at $100 a month and comes in 5x or 20x Pro usage, and the pricing page prints no separate figure for the 20x option. Anthropic bills Max monthly only, so the annual discount that Pro offers does not reach it. For every Claude plan in detail, see our Claude pricing guide.

Team seats cost $25 a month on monthly billing, and less when billed annually, for teams of two to 150. The Team tier adds admin controls, single sign-on, central billing and pooled API credit of up to $500 a month.

Gemini

Google's US page lists four consumer tiers, and none of them shows an annual price. Free costs $0 with a Google account. AI Plus costs $4.99 a month for twice the Free usage and 400 GB of storage. AI Pro costs $19.99 a month for four times the Free usage, 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite. AI Ultra starts at $99.99 a month for five times AI Pro usage, with a $199.99 tier at twenty times.

Gemini's app limits are compute-based, not message counts. They reset every five hours until a weekly cap is reached, and AI credits can extend them. The multiples are the only fixed figures on either side, and each is measured against a different baseline, so do not read them as a head-to-head. For the rest of the detail, see our Gemini pricing guide.

One person and a five-seat team

Billing term changes the solo math. Claude Pro billed yearly costs $200 for the year. Billed monthly, the same plan costs $240. Google AI Pro costs $239.88 a year at its listed $19.99 monthly price. On a yearly commitment, that puts Claude about $40 under Google. Google's higher price buys the extra storage and Gemini inside Gmail and Docs.

The five-seat case is where the gap is easiest to see. Claude Team billed annually comes to $1,200 a year for five people, or $1,500 billed monthly at $25 a seat. Gemini Enterprise Business starts at $21 a seat, which is $1,260 a year for five. It is Google's business product rather than a consumer plan, and Google does not say whether it bills monthly or yearly. Treat it as the nearest price match, not an identical product.

Models and context

Anthropic's models page recommends Opus 5.5 for most workloads and Fable 5.1 for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work. Every current Claude model in that table has a 1M-token context window. On the Gemini side, free users get Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, Plus adds 3.6 Flash and 3.1 Pro, and Pro adds 3.8 Flash. In the API, Gemini 3.1 Pro is still labeled a preview model.

Neither vendor's pricing or model page, as read for this page, includes a head-to-head writing benchmark. So the verdict below rests on what each plan includes and on what each vendor says its models are for. Anthropic positions Opus 5.5 for long-running coding and knowledge work, which is the clearest published signal either side gives for long-form writing. Google's strongest signal is where Gemini sits: inside the apps you already use.

If your buying question is really about the wider field, the Claude vs ChatGPT and Gemini vs ChatGPT comparisons set each side against the most common alternative. ChatGPT's own baseline is in our ChatGPT pricing guide, and Toolradar keeps a separate ChatGPT page.

Coding and the API

Claude Code comes with Pro, so the plan we recommend for coding includes the terminal tool. Gemini's paid tiers raise coding allowances on Google's own surfaces, with higher Jules limits and entry rate limits for Google Antigravity on Pro. If coding is most of your month, that is the first line to check. Our best AI coding assistants guide compares the editor-based options against either chat window.

For developers, the API prices split the two vendors by tier:

Tier Claude (input / output per million tokens) Gemini (input / output per million tokens)
Top Opus 5.5: $4 / $20 Gemini 3.1 Pro (preview): $2 / $12 for prompts up to 200,000 tokens
Middle Sonnet 5.5: $2 / $10 Gemini 3.8 Flash: $0.75 / $3.75 through December 31, 2026
Lightest Haiku 5.5: $0.10 / $0.50 for prompts up to 100,000 tokens Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite: $0.30 / $2.50

Fable 5.1, which Anthropic recommends for demanding reasoning, costs more than Opus 5.5 and is not in this table. On the top tier of this table, a job with 1 million input tokens and 200,000 output tokens costs $8.00 on Opus 5.5 and $4.40 on Gemini 3.1 Pro, if each prompt stays in Gemini's lower price band. Gemini wins that comparison on price, but it is still a preview model with no free API tier. Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.5 Flash-Lite do have a free tier.

Three price changes can catch a budget off guard. Haiku 5.5 costs five times its base rate once a prompt passes 100,000 tokens. Gemini 3.1 Pro rises to $4 input and $18 output above 200,000 prompt tokens. And Gemini 3.8 Flash doubles on January 1, 2027, to $1.50 input and $7.50 output.

Google or Microsoft 365, and media

Gemini's AI Pro tier puts Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Vids, and it adds YouTube Premium Lite and 5 TB of storage. Claude Pro brings Claude into Microsoft 365 instead, which is the better fit if your documents live in Word and Outlook. Gemini is also the only one of the two whose plan list names image and video generation. Image creation and editing sit on the free tier, and video generation starts at AI Plus. Our best AI video tools guide covers the dedicated video products if generation is the main job.

Who should pick what

Pick Claude Pro if coding is your job, if most of your writing runs through long documents, or if your files live in Microsoft 365. Pay yearly to get the lower rate.

Pick Google AI Pro if your files live in Gmail, Docs and Drive, since Gemini inside those apps is a Pro feature. Pay monthly.

Pick AI Plus at $4.99 if you want more usage and 400 GB of storage and do not need Claude. It is the cheapest paid plan across both vendors, and Claude has nothing that low. If you want plan and price changes like these in your inbox, the AIpresso daily brief covers AI tools every day.

Stay on the free plans if you use either tool a few times a week. Gemini's free tier includes 15 GB of storage and image generation. Claude's free tier gives base usage, without Claude Code.

Pay for both if each one handles different work. Together that is $39.99 a month, or $479.88 over a year at monthly rates. Use Claude for coding and long documents, and Gemini for Gmail, Docs and video.

Two gotchas are easy to miss. Claude Max bills monthly only, so no annual saving applies. And Google's consumer tiers show no annual prices, so check the checkout page before assuming a yearly discount. If data handling is your deciding factor, check our privacy ranking before you sign up.

Methodology

Plan prices are the US figures on Claude's pricing page and Google's US AI plans page, read on October 10, 2026. API prices come from Anthropic's API pricing and Google's Gemini API pricing, read the same day, and show base rates only, not batch, cache or regional surcharges. Where a vendor publishes no annual or 20x price, this page says so rather than estimating one. Totals are list price multiplied by the stated number of months or seats, before tax and discounts.
