Runway costs $12 a month on Standard, $28 on Pro and $76 on Max when billed yearly, or $15, $35 and $95 month to month, verified on Runway's pricing page in October 2026. Every paid plan is a monthly pool of credits, and Gen-4.5 spends 12 credits per second, so Standard buys about 52 seconds of video, Pro about 187 and Max about 791.
The sticker is not the price of a video. A 10-second Gen-4.5 clip costs $2.30 on Standard and $0.96 on Max at yearly rates, and you will rarely keep the first take. Below is the credit math in one place, plus who should pay for which plan.
Aipresso data: of the 139 tools we track in Toolradar's AI video generation ranking, as of October 2026, 7 of the 10 top picks have a free plan. Runway is in that directory as Runway on Toolradar, listed with a free plan. Our own calculation from the table below: the cheapest paid Runway plan works out to about $0.23 per second of Gen-4.5 video on yearly billing.
| Plan | Price | Credits | Gen-4.5 seconds | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 125, one time | About 10 | A first look at the tools |
| Standard | $12/mo yearly, $15/mo monthly | 625 per month | About 52 | Occasional clips |

| Enterprise | Custom quote | Sized to the organization | Quote only | SSO, security, large rollouts |
How much does Runway cost to use?
Runway sells credits, not clips. Standard, Pro and Max each include a fixed monthly allotment, and the allotment is the only thing that scales with price. Yearly billing takes 20% off, which adds up to real money on Max.
Credits on Standard and Pro reset each billing cycle and do not roll over. Max rolls unused credits forward for one month, which matters if your output comes in bursts around a campaign. Credits you buy on top of a plan never expire, though Runway's pricing page does not list a per-credit price for those top-ups, only a 1,000-credit minimum.
How many credits does a Runway video cost?
Credits per second depend entirely on the model, and the gap is wide. Runway's own plan table lists these costs; the 5-second clips per month column uses the Standard allotment of 625 credits.
| Model | Credits | Per second | 5-second clips on Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gen-4.5 | 60 per 5 seconds | 12 | 10 |
| Aleph 2.0 | 140 per 5 seconds | 28 | 4 |
| Seedance 2.0 Fast | 116 per 4 seconds | 29 | About 5 (4-second clips) |
| Seedance 2.0 Pro, 1080p | 160 per 4 seconds | 40 | About 3 (4-second clips) |
Gen-4.5 is the house model and the cheapest of these, so it is the sensible default for drafts. If you reach for Seedance Pro at 1080p, the same 625 credits stretch to about 15 seconds of footage, which makes Standard a trial plan for premium models rather than a working one.
Is Runway free?
Yes, but only as a sample. The Free plan gives 125 credits once, which does not renew, and covers a selection of models for testing concepts. That is about 10 seconds of Gen-4.5, enough to judge the look and not enough to finish a project.
Free also carries 5GB of storage, against 20GB on Standard. If a single test clip convinces you, the paid plans below remove the one-time cap and add all models. Our best free AI video generators roundup covers options that renew a free allowance every month.
Standard, the entry plan
Standard is for people who need a handful of clips a month. Its 625 credits cover about 10 five-second Gen-4.5 clips. It includes all video and image models, no watermarks, 4K upscaling and 20GB of storage.
The weakness is the pool size. A full minute of Gen-4.5 video is 720 credits, which does not fit in a Standard month, and a single usable shot often takes several attempts. Choose it for social snippets and storyboards, not for a weekly output schedule.
Pro, the plan most creators land on
Runway marks Pro as popular. Its 2,250 credits are 3.6 times the Standard pool for 2.3 times the price. That makes every second cheaper: about $0.15 per Gen-4.5 second versus $0.23.
It also adds unlimited 4K video upscaling, 15 parallel generations, a Brand Kit, a custom voice clone and the ability to top up credits any time. If you generate only a few clips a month, Standard is enough. If you iterate daily, Pro is the better fit, because the extra parallel slots and top-ups matter more than the headline credits.
Max, the heavy solo plan
Max has the lowest per-second price of the individual plans, about $0.096 per Gen-4.5 second on yearly billing. It adds early access to new models, 20 parallel generations, three Brand Kits, studio-grade outputs such as HDR and ProRes, and 500GB of storage.
On monthly billing Max is $95, and the credit price lands at exactly one cent, the same as the API. So only yearly Max and yearly Team beat Runway's own developer price per credit. A solo freelancer working to client deadlines gets value here, while a hobbyist will leave most of the pool unused.
Team and Enterprise
Team is $69 per seat per month, or $55 yearly, and each seat adds 6,900 credits to one shared pool that rolls over for a month. Runway describes it for groups of two to nine. It includes everything in Max plus shared projects, frame-accurate comments and priority support.
Per credit, a Team seat on yearly billing costs about the same as Max, so pay for it only when you need shared review and a pooled balance, not to save money. Enterprise has no public price and is sold through sales, with SSO and custom credit sizing.
What does a finished video really cost?
Raw seconds understate the bill, because you generate more footage than you keep. This scenario assumes you keep one take in three, which is our assumption and not a Runway figure. Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per second, yearly pricing.
| Finished footage per month | Generated at 1 in 3 | Credits | Plan that fits | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 seconds | 30 seconds | 360 | Standard | $12 |
| 60 seconds | 180 seconds | 2,160 | Pro | $28 |
| 250 seconds | 750 seconds | 9,000 | Max | $76 |
At the Pro line, one finished minute uses the whole plan, about $0.47 per finished second. The same minute on Standard would need 2,160 credits against a 625 pool, so you would be buying top-ups. Check the number of takes you really need before picking a tier.
Runway API pricing
Developers pay a flat one cent per credit through Runway's API, with no subscription. Gen-4.5 costs 12 credits per second, so $0.12 per second and $1.20 per 10-second clip. Gen-4 Turbo costs 5 credits per second, so $0.05, and Aleph 2.0 costs 28 credits per second, so $0.28.
The API suits developers or anyone who needs a few clips without paying a monthly fee, since there is no editor or subscription attached. Once you generate more than a Pro pool allows, a yearly Max still undercuts the API by about 20%.
Runway vs Kling, Luma and Google
Entry prices do not line up, because each vendor spends credits at its own rate. Compare the price of a finished clip, not the plan card. For a full side-by-side on quality and control, see Kling vs Runway vs Luma, and for Kling's plan math see Kling AI pricing.
| Tool | Entry paid price | What it buys, per vendor page |
|---|---|---|
| Runway Standard | Entry paid plan, see plan table | 625 credits, about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 |
| Luma Plus | $30/mo, or $300 billed yearly | 10,000 credits; Ray3.14 at 720p spends 20 credits per second |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99/mo | Limited trial of Veo 3.1 Lite video generation |
| Kling API | Pay per second, from $0.084/s | Kling 3.0 at 720p without audio |
Luma's pricing page puts Ray3.14 at 720p at 20 credits per second, so 10,000 credits cover about 500 seconds at that setting. Google lists its AI plans with Veo video only as a limited trial on Pro and full Veo 3.1 access on Ultra, which starts at $99.99. Kling's developer pricing shows $0.084 per second, cheaper than Runway's $0.12 for Gen-4.5, though the models are not the same. Our Sora alternatives page covers OpenAI's route. Toolradar also tracks Kling AI and Luma.
Is Runway worth it?
Yes, if you produce short clips for ads, social or concepts and want one subscription that also runs third-party models such as Kling 3.0. No, if you need long continuous video or a talking presenter, where an avatar tool such as HeyGen or Synthesia costs less per finished minute.
For a broader view, our best AI video generators ranking, the image-to-video picks and the AI video editors list show where Runway sits among alternatives. Its honest weakness is credit burn: iteration is where the money goes.
