Is Runway Worth It?
What Runway's plans buy in finished video, where the credits go, and how it compares with Kling, Luma, Pika and Adobe Firefly.
Runway is worth a paid plan if you make short AI videos every month, and it is not worth it for a single project. Standard costs $12 a month on annual billing or $15 month to month, and it buys 625 credits. At 12 credits per second for Gen-4.5, that is about 52 seconds of video a month.
The free plan is a sample of 125 credits that never renew. The bigger cost is iteration, because most takes get thrown away. Our Runway pricing breakdown lists every plan and credit rate, so this review concentrates on the verdict, the trade-offs and the alternatives.
Key factsBest for: Short AI video and image work, made often enough to use a…
- One credit pool for Runway's own models and third-party ones, with a free plan that works as a sample.
- Gen-4.5 video on Standard: About 52 seconds a month at 12 credits per second, from Standard's 625 credits
- Gen-4.5 generations a year on Standard: 125, against 450 on Pro and 1,900 on Max, by our arithmetic on five-second clips
- Free plan credits: 125 one-time credits
- Median cheapest paid plan, AI video tools: $19.95 a month across 42 tools that publish one, per Toolradar on October 10, 2026
Pros
- Standard includes all AI video and image models, with no watermarks and 4K upscaling, per Runway's plan card.
- Kling 3.0, Nano Banana Pro and Seedance 2.5 appear in its plan lists, so one subscription covers several model families.
- Pro adds unlimited 4K video upscaling, 15 parallel generations and top-up credits at any time.
Cons
- Gen-4.5 spends 12 credits a second, so Standard's 625 credits cover about 52 seconds of video a month.
- Standard and Pro credits reset each billing cycle and do not roll over, and top-ups start at 1,000 credits.
RunwayRunway sells a credit pool, not a number of clips, so the useful question is how much footage a month of credits buys that you will actually keep.
We read Runway's pricing page on October 10, 2026, and set its numbers against four alternatives that sell per-second rates or monthly credit pools.
Aipresso data: Toolradar tracks 141 AI video generation tools as of October 10, 2026.
The median cheapest paid plan across the 42 that publish one is $19.95 a month, which puts Runway's Standard plan $7.95 a month below that median on annual billing.
What is Runway?
Runway is a generative video and image studio that sells its own models and third-party ones in the same subscription. Gen-4.5 is Runway's house model. Kling 3.0 and Nano Banana Pro appear in the Standard plan list, and Seedance 2.5 and Topaz AI Upscale appear on the higher tiers.
You pay for a monthly credit pool.
Each generation spends credits by model, duration and resolution, so a plan card shows the pool, not the price of one clip.
Toolradar keeps profiles for Runway, Kling AI, Luma AI, Pika Labs and Adobe Firefly, and each of the four alternatives compared here has one.
How Runway works
Credits decide what you get. Gen-4.5 costs 12 credits a second, so a 10-second clip costs 120 credits, and Standard's 625 credits pay for five of them with 25 left over. Over a year, the same pools come to 125 five-second Gen-4.5 generations on Standard, 450 on Pro and 1,900 on Max, by our arithmetic.
Other models cost more per second.
Aleph 2.0 spends 140 credits per five seconds, or 28 a second. Seedance 2.0 Pro at 1080p spends 160 credits per four seconds, or 40 a second. Gen-4.5 is the cheapest of the models listed here, so draft on it and reach for a pricier model only for the shot that needs it.

Runway key features
Runway pricing
Methodology: Runway's plan prices, credit rates and plan features were read on Runway's pricing page on October 10, 2026.
Competitor prices come from Kling's developer pricing, Luma's plans page, Pika's pricing page and Adobe Firefly's plans page, all checked the same day.
The category median comes from Toolradar's AI video generation ranking. We did not generate test clips, so nothing on this page judges output quality.
Annual and monthly prices for Standard, Pro and Max sit in the pricing table.
Enterprise is sold through sales, and this review does not quote a Team price. Per-clip figures are our multiplications of Runway's published credit rates, not invoices, and they leave out the takes you discard. Kling prices in units, and one unit is worth $0.14 at list, so the per-second dollar rates quoted here are already converted.
| Plan | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|

What we like

- Kling 3.0, Nano Banana Pro and Seedance 2.5 appear in its plan lists, so one subscription covers several model families.
- Pro adds unlimited 4K video upscaling, 15 parallel generations and top-up credits at any time.
What could be better
- Gen-4.5 spends 12 credits a second, so Standard's 625 credits cover about 52 seconds of video a month.
- Standard and Pro credits reset each billing cycle and do not roll over, and top-ups start at 1,000 credits.
Who Runway is for
Runway fits a solo creator or a small team that makes short clips for ads, social posts or concept reels and expects to throw away takes. At Standard's pool, that is roughly ten Gen-4.5 five-second clips a month, or about five 10-second clips.
Teams that review drafts together should look at Pro or Max for the parallel slots and bigger pools, and check Runway's site for the Team price, which this review does not quote.
Skip Runway for a one-off project. The free plan covers about 10 seconds of Gen-4.5, enough to judge a look but not to finish a film.
Skip it too if you need a presenter who talks for minutes. Our HeyGen review covers an avatar tool built for that job, and Runway's credit math is built around short shots.

The bottom line
Runway is worth a paid plan for short clips you make every month, and not worth it for one project with a fixed deadline. Standard fits a creator who can make about ten five-second Gen-4.5 clips a month and throw away most takes.
Count the takes you discard in your first week, because that number sets your real monthly cost.
Skip Runway if your work needs credits that roll over, or if the brief calls for one long shot. A single 60-second Gen-4.5 shot costs 720 credits, which is more than Standard's whole pool.
Kling's developer card gives a per-second rate, Luma's Plus plan includes commercial use, and Pika's free tier lets you test before you pay. For Runway's full plan table and credit rates, read our Runway pricing breakdown.
