HeyGen Review 2026

Worth it when you can budget credits instead of minutes: the expensive model makes Creator a small pool, Business seats do not add credits, and SCORM stays off the cheaper plans.

TL;DR

HeyGen is worth it in 2026 when you budget the credit pool before you count minutes. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, for 600 credits. Avatar V spends 48 credits a minute, so that pool is 12.5 minutes. Pro starts at $49 a month for 1,000 credits. Business is $149 a month for 1,500 credits, and extra seats do not add credits.

The catch is the model: Avatar III photo is 7 credits a minute, so the same Creator pool is about 85 minutes, a solo habit if you stay on that cheaper look. Watermark removal, 1080p, and voice cloning sit on Creator, while SCORM, SSO, and interactive video sit on Business. Synthesia is the closest minute-based alternative, with a free 10-minute plan and SCORM only on Enterprise.

  • Updated: September 25, 2026
  • Best for: Creators who will budget credits, and teams that need SCORM only once they reach Business.
  • Price as of September 25, 2026: From $29/mo (Creator, $24/mo yearly); free plan, no card.
  • A credit-metered avatar studio where the model decides if a Creator month is a short batch or a habit.
  • Founded: 2020
  • Office: Los Angeles, USA
  • Free plan: Yes, short clips
  • Alternatives covered: Synthesia, Colossyan, Elai, D-ID

Pros

  • The cheap photo model turns the Creator allotment into about 85 minutes, at 7 credits a minute, enough for a solo habit.
  • Paid plans list 175+ languages, and Precision translation is a known 10 credits a minute, so a dubbed cut is priced separately.
  • Business adds SCORM, SSO, and interactive video that Creator and Pro do not include, so a course cannot stay on the personal plans.

Cons

  • Avatar V spends the Creator allotment in 12.5 minutes, before a single retake, so one hero clip can end the month.
  • Extra seats cost $20 and do not add credits, and Creator and Pro cannot buy credit packs.
  • Free is 1 to 3 videos by region, capped at 1 minute, with watermark removal only on paid plans.

Starting priceCreator monthly

HeyGen is the avatar studio to buy when the face has to be a specific person and you can do the credit math before you render. The model you pick is the invoice, and the sticker price is the smaller part of that decision.

A cheap photo model stretches the month, and the expensive model spends it on a few hero clips.

This review prices every published HeyGen tier, then sets it next to Synthesia, Colossyan, Elai, and D-ID. The wider desk is our best AI avatar generators guide, and the motion tools that are not talking heads are in best AI video generators.

Toolradar data: the September 2026 AI video ranking evaluated 130 tools, and HeyGen is the overall pick on that page.

How we compared: prices and credit rates below were verified on each vendor's pricing or help page in September 2026, except D-ID's floor, which comes from its own March 16, 2026 announcement. No vendor paid for a place in this review.

What is HeyGen?

HeyGen is an AI video studio that turns a script, a photo, or a short filmed twin into a person speaking on camera. The about page lists a Los Angeles office, and the company says the product is used by 100,000+ businesses.

You pick a stock avatar, a photo look, or a custom video avatar, attach a voice, and export a talking video, which is a different job from describing a scene in Midjourney or in the clip tools in Kling vs Runway vs Luma.

Paid plans list 175+ languages and dialects, and Free lists 30+, so a multilingual library starts on a paid plan.

Credits are the meter on every paid plan, and the model sets the rate. API plans and LiveAvatar are separate products, so a studio subscription does not include them, and a legacy unlimited plan cannot be restored after you cancel it.

Training teams will notice what is missing until Business: SCORM export, LMS integrations, SAML SSO, and interactive quizzes, so a course on Creator or Pro cannot drop into a learning system.

That split matches Synthesia, which also holds SCORM for Enterprise, and it is the opposite of Colossyan, which sells a limited SCORM allowance on its self-serve plan.

How HeyGen works

You write a script or upload audio, choose a look, and HeyGen shows the credit cost before you generate, so you can drop a scene that would empty the month. Stock video avatars start at 500+ on Free and 700+ on paid plans. Photo avatars stop at 3 on Free and become unlimited once you pay.

A custom video avatar is included, and more slots are an add-on if one twin is not enough.

Day to day, the fork is which model you spend. A month on the cheap photo model is a regular publishing habit, while a month on the expensive model is a short batch of hero clips and then the balance is gone.

Custom Expressive Motion works only on Avatar IV and adds 40 credits a minute on top of that model's rate, so gestures cost more than a still delivery. A 30-second scene with that motion is billed at 20 extra credits.

Translation is a second spend, not a free pass on the same clip. Speed, Precision, and a version without lip-sync each carry their own rate, so a localized library needs its own budget. The wider set of tools for that job is our AI translation tools guide.

Video Agent is a third meter: 40 credits a minute in Standard mode and 120 in Seedance mode, so a prompt-built clip can cost triple a plain avatar scene.

Free accounts do not hold a credit balance at all, and Creator or Pro cannot buy a one-time refill, so the free tier cannot rescue a paid month that runs dry. The free quota is a few short clips that vary by region.

HeyGen key features

Credit rates that change the planEssential
Avatar V costs 48 credits a minute for photo or video looks, so a Creator month on that model is a short batch. Avatar IV photo is 16, Avatar IV video is 31, and Avatar III photo is 7. Creator's 600 credits are 12.5 minutes of Avatar V, or about 85 minutes of Avatar III photo.
Lip-sync translation as its own billEssential
Speed translation is 6 credits a minute and Precision is 10, with or without a new avatar render, so a dubbed cut spends the pool again. A version without lip-sync is 4 credits a minute when the mouth does not need to match. Free lists 30+ languages, and paid plans list 175+ languages and dialects, plus script editing on Pro.
Twins, clones, and look training
You get one voice clone on Free, up to 40 on Creator, and up to 70 on Pro, so many speakers can outgrow Creator before you need Business. Extra video-avatar slots are $288 a year, a generated look costs 1 credit, and training a custom model from your photos costs 60 credits.
Business controls, same credit poolEssential
SCORM, LMS integrations, SAML SSO, and interactive quizzes are Business features, not Creator or Pro, so a personal plan cannot ship a course. Extra seats are a monthly add-on and do not raise the shared credit pool, so headcount and runtime are separate bills, and credit packs stay on Business too.
Length, resolution, and the free cap
Free videos stop at 1 minute, so the free plan cannot hold a lesson. Creator exports up to 1080p and allows videos up to 30 minutes, enough for a normal explainer, and Pro adds 4K at that cap. Business raises a single video to 60 minutes, and Enterprise is the only plan with no standard duration max.
Rollover, and the plan you cannot reopen
Unused monthly credits roll for one extra cycle, so a balance can last about 60 days if you stay paid. Annual credits arrive each month and stack until renewal. Cancel onto Free and they expire, and a legacy unlimited plan cannot be restored once you leave it.

HeyGen pricing

HeyGen publishes the ladder on its pricing page, verified September 2026. Pro starts at 1,000 credits for $49 a month and scales, with the same features on every tier, to 100,000 credits at $4,300 a month, so you buy runtime rather than a new toolset.

Business is $149 a month for the first seat, and adding people does not grow the credit pool. Enterprise is a quote, with SCIM, invoice billing, and no standard duration cap.

A 5-person Business workspace is $229 a month, the first seat plus four seats at $20 each. A 20-person workspace is $529 a month, and both bills share one pool of 1,500 credits.

At the Avatar V rate that pool is 31.25 minutes for the whole company, about 6 minutes a person on the smaller team, so the whole company still shares a short runtime. Refills exist only on Business, at $0.05 a credit, so a block the size of the Creator allotment costs $30, and Creator or Pro cannot buy one.

Annual Creator is the $24 rate, but the year of credits does not arrive at once. They land monthly and stack until renewal, while a monthly leftover lasts one extra cycle and then expires.

Business includes 5 custom video avatars, an extra video-avatar slot is $288 a year, and HeyGen does not publish an annual Pro rate, so do not copy the Creator discount onto Pro.

Synthesia bills minutes instead of credits, and Basic and Starter share one small monthly allowance. Starter is $168 a year, or $19 month to month, well under HeyGen Creator. Creator is $89 a month or $708 a year for a half hour a month.

Enterprise is where the minute cap comes off and where SCORM lives, so either one requires a sales quote.

An edit charges only the new seconds, and unused minutes do not roll over, which wastes a quiet month. A Studio Express-1 avatar is $1,000 a year on annual plans only. Synthesia lists 3 personal avatars on Starter and 5 on Creator.

Colossyan Professional is $59 a month on the annual plan, or a higher rate paid monthly, with 30 NEO minutes and 10 NEO2 minutes, two model pools rather than one bucket.

Yearly billing drops an extra editor from $45 to $30 a month, so two annual editors cost the same as one monthly Professional seat and three total $119. Starter is free, with 20 NEO minutes and half a NEO2 minute.

Professional includes 5 SCORM exports a month, so a small LMS rollout can stay self-serve, and a filmed studio avatar is another $1,000 a year. Monthly leftovers do not return, while an annual plan delivers the year's minutes up front and you can pause for up to 2 months.

Elai Creator is $276 billed annually for 15 minutes, and the monthly price matches HeyGen Creator, so you pay the same sticker and receive minutes instead of credits. The listed rate is $1.93 a minute on the monthly plan.

Team is $125 a month, or $1,200 billed annually, for 50 minutes with 3 editors and 3 guests.

A top-up minute is $2, a re-render spends minutes again even on the same file, and SCORM plus SSO wait for Enterprise. Voice clone and selfie avatar are Creator add-ons, Team includes one of each, and Elai lists 75+ languages and 80+ avatars.

D-ID's March 16, 2026 announcement says plans start at $5.90 a month, the lowest floor here, better as a test than as a training system. A 14-day unlimited trial leads into Lite, Pro, and Advanced, with Enterprise as a quote.

Trial and Lite keep a D-ID logo watermark, Pro and Advanced keep a generic AI watermark, and Enterprise can restyle that mark without removing it, so a clean export is not for sale. Minutes round up to the next 15 seconds, they do not roll over, and premium presenters are not on Lite.

HeyGen pros and cons

What we like

  • The cheap photo model turns the Creator allotment into about 85 minutes, at 7 credits a minute, enough for a solo habit.
  • Paid plans list 175+ languages, and Precision translation is a known 10 credits a minute, so a dubbed cut is priced separately.
  • Business adds SCORM, SSO, and interactive video that Creator and Pro do not include, so a course cannot stay on the personal plans.

What could be better

  • Avatar V spends the Creator allotment in 12.5 minutes, before a single retake, so one hero clip can end the month.
  • Extra seats cost $20 and do not add credits, and Creator and Pro cannot buy credit packs.
  • Free is 1 to 3 videos by region, capped at 1 minute, with watermark removal only on paid plans.

Who HeyGen is for

Buy HeyGen Creator if you are one person making a short batch of avatar videos and you will stay on Avatar III or Avatar IV photo most of the time, because that is when the pool lasts the month.

Buy Business if the requirement list says SSO, SCORM, or more than one editor, and budget the seat line separately from the credit line, because they do not move together.

Skip HeyGen when finance wants a minute count: Synthesia and Elai sell finished minutes, Colossyan puts a SCORM allowance on the self-serve plan, and D-ID is the test if a watermark on the cheap plan is acceptable.

The bottom line

HeyGen is the right buy when the avatar has to be a specific person and you will choose the cheap model on purpose. Creator is a good personal plan on Avatar III photo and a short plan on Avatar V. Business is the plan that matches a training team, and the seat price is not the credit price.

Choose Synthesia when finance wants minutes and will accept an Enterprise quote for course export. Choose Colossyan when those exports have to be on the self-serve invoice.

Choose Elai when a fixed minute pack is the whole brief and a re-render cost is acceptable. Choose D-ID when you are testing the low published floor and a watermark is fine.

Frequently asked questions

Is HeyGen worth it in 2026?
Yes, for a solo creator who will stay on the cheaper avatar models, and for a company that needs SCORM or SSO and will pay the Business seat. Creator is $29 a month, with a lower rate when you pay yearly. It is the wrong default when a course library needs fixed minutes, because the expensive model burns the pool in one short batch, while Synthesia, Colossyan, and Elai sell minutes instead. Prices were verified on HeyGen's pricing page in September 2026.
How much does HeyGen cost?
Creator is the entry paid plan, and paying the year up front lowers that rate. Pro starts at $49 a month for 1,000 credits and runs up to 100,000 credits at $4,300 a month, with the same features on every tier, so you buy runtime rather than new tools. Business is $149 a month for the first seat, then $20 for each extra seat, and those seats do not add credits, while Enterprise stays a quote. A 5-person Business bill is $229 a month, and a 20-person bill is $529 a month, on one shared pool.
Does HeyGen have a free plan?
Yes. You get 3 videos a month, up to 1 minute each, with no card, enough to test a face and not enough to publish. The quota is 1 to 3 videos depending on region, and Free accounts do not use credits, so there is nothing to roll or top up. You get one custom video avatar, 500+ stock avatars, and 30+ languages. Watermark removal, 1080p export, and the 175-language set start on Creator, which is why a client-facing video has to be paid. There is no way to buy extra free videos.
How does HeyGen compare with Synthesia?
HeyGen wins when the face is a photo twin or a filmed twin and you can manage credits, the right trade when the person on camera has to be someone specific. Synthesia wins when the buyer wants minutes: 10 a month on Basic and Starter, 30 a month on Creator, and unlimited on Enterprise. Both hold course export off the cheap plans, while Synthesia charges only the new seconds on an edit and HeyGen spends credits again on a new render, so revisions cost less on Synthesia. Synthesia Starter is $168 a year, and HeyGen Business adds SSO and SCORM without an enterprise contract.
How many minutes do 600 HeyGen credits buy?
The minutes depend on the model you render: Avatar V is 12.5 minutes at 48 credits a minute, the path that empties a Creator month fast. Avatar IV photo is 37.5 minutes at 16 credits a minute, and Avatar IV video is about 19 minutes at 31 credits a minute. Avatar III photo is about 85 minutes at 7 credits a minute, the choice that makes the entry plan feel generous. Seedance-mode Video Agent is 5 minutes at 120 credits a minute, so a prompt-built clip empties the pool fastest. Trust the in-product estimate before you generate, because motion prompts and translation add their own rates.
