ChatGPT Statistics 2026: Users, Revenue and Plan Prices
ChatGPT statistics for 2026 from OpenAI's own posts: more than 1.2 billion weekly users, 50 million subscribers, $2 billion a month in revenue, and every plan price.

More than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week, according to OpenAI's GPT-6 announcement of October 7, 2026. That is up from more than 800 million weekly users in November 2025. OpenAI also reported more than 50 million consumer subscribers and revenue of $2 billion a month in early 2026, and its plans run from free to $500 a month.
Every figure on this page comes from an OpenAI announcement or help page, linked and dated where it appears. OpenAI is a private company, so these are its own reported numbers, not audited filings, and most are floors ("more than"). Toolradar data: on Toolradar, the software directory we run, ChatGPT is listed as an alternative to 114 other tools and ranks #3 most compared of the 290 AI assistants with 20 or more compare-page visits, as of October 2026 (ChatGPT on Toolradar).

Read the table as a set of snapshots, not one dashboard. OpenAI publishes each figure in a different post on a different date, so the subscriber count and the revenue figure describe early 2026, while the user count is from October.
How many people use ChatGPT?
ChatGPT's weekly audience grew by about half in the eleven months to October 2026. The figure is weekly, not monthly: OpenAI counts people who use ChatGPT at least once in a seven-day window, which is a stricter measure than the monthly actives most apps report.
| Date | Weekly users reported by OpenAI | Post |
|---|---|---|
| September 15, 2025 | 700 million | How people are using ChatGPT |
| November 5, 2025 | More than 800 million | 1 million business customers |
| February 27, 2026 | More than 900 million | Scaling AI for everyone |
| August 31, 2026 | More than 1 billion | ChatGPT ads post |
| September 29, 2026 | 1.2 billion | DevDay 2026 recap |
| October 7, 2026 | More than 1.2 billion | GPT-6 for everyone |
Between those two OpenAI posts, ChatGPT added roughly 400 million weekly users in eleven months, or about 36 million a month on average. That is our arithmetic on OpenAI's rounded floors, so treat it as a lower-bound pace rather than a precise rate.
The growth did not slow as the base got bigger. The count moved from more than 900 million in February to more than 1 billion by the end of August, and OpenAI was citing the current figure by its DevDay event on September 29. For a buyer, the point is simple: whatever ChatGPT changes in its plans reaches more than a billion people within a week.
How much money does ChatGPT make?
OpenAI said on March 31, 2026 that it was generating $2 billion in revenue per month. Multiplied by twelve, that is a $24 billion annual pace, our arithmetic and not a figure OpenAI printed. The same post traces the climb: $1 billion of revenue within a year of launching ChatGPT, then $1 billion per quarter by the end of 2024.
These revenue figures cover OpenAI as a whole, including the API, not ChatGPT alone. OpenAI does not split out ChatGPT revenue in these posts, so any "ChatGPT revenue" number you see elsewhere is an estimate.
Three signals show where the money comes from:
- Enterprise is catching up. Enterprise made up more than 40% of revenue in March 2026, and OpenAI said it was on track to reach parity with consumer by the end of 2026.
- Advertising is new and already large. ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized run rate in under 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers, according to OpenAI's August 31, 2026 post.
- Subscriptions still anchor consumer revenue. The subscriber count OpenAI reported in February held in its March post too, and OpenAI said January and February were on track to be its largest months for new subscribers.
The money behind the product is just as large. OpenAI announced $110 billion of new investment at a $730 billion pre-money valuation in February 2026, then closed a round of $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation on March 31.
How many ChatGPT users pay?
Roughly 1 in 18 weekly users paid for a consumer plan in early 2026, based on OpenAI's figures of more than 50 million subscribers and more than 900 million weekly users, both reported on February 27, 2026. That is a paid share of about 5.6%, our arithmetic, and both inputs are floors.
The business side adds another layer. OpenAI counted more than 9 million paying business users in February 2026 and more than 1 million business customers in November 2025, a count that includes every organization paying for ChatGPT for work or for the API. Those seats sit on top of the consumer subscriber figure.
What people use ChatGPT for
OpenAI's own usage study, published September 15, 2025 with a Harvard economist, analyzed 1.5 million conversations when ChatGPT had 700 million weekly users. It is still the most detailed breakdown OpenAI has published.
| Use type | Share of messages | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Asking | 49% | Questions where ChatGPT acts as an advisor |
| Doing | 40% | Drafting, planning and programming tasks |
| Expressing | 11% | Reflection, exploration and play |
About 30% of consumer usage was work-related and about 70% was not, with both growing. The same study found the gender gap had closed: the share of users with typically feminine names rose from 37% in January 2024 to 52% by July 2025.
For anyone choosing a plan, this split matters more than the headline user count. Most use is advice and drafting, which the free and Go plans cover; the higher tiers mostly sell more reasoning, longer agent sessions and higher limits. Our how to use ChatGPT guide covers the everyday workflows.
ChatGPT plan prices in 2026
ChatGPT costs $0 on Free, $8 a month on Go, $20 on Plus and $100 to $500 on Pro, read on OpenAI's pricing page and help center on October 21, 2026. Go and Plus bill monthly; Pro bills monthly only, with no annual option.
| Plan | Monthly price | A year at that price, our arithmetic | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | GPT-6 Luna; ad-supported |
| Go | $8 | $96 | More messages, uploads, images and memory than Free; may include ads |
| Plus | $20 | $240 | Adds GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, projects, tasks and custom GPTs |

Annual billing saves money only on Business. A Standard seat costs $60 less per year on the annual plan, and a Premium seat $300 less, by our arithmetic. Codex and the developer side
ChatGPT's coding agent grew faster than ChatGPT itself in early 2026. OpenAI reported 1.6 million weekly Codex users on February 27, more than 2 million on March 31, and 3 million on April 8, 2026. The March post also said OpenAI's APIs processed more than 15 billion tokens per minute.
For developers, the API is priced separately from ChatGPT plans. Our LLM API prices 2026 page compares the per-token rates.
What these numbers do not tell you
Three cautions keep these statistics honest:
- Most figures are floors. "More than" a round number can hide tens of millions of users either way, so a growth rate computed from them is approximate.
- Revenue is company-wide. The monthly revenue figure includes the API and enterprise deals, not consumer ChatGPT alone.
- Dates differ by figure. No single OpenAI post reports users, subscribers and revenue together for the same month, so a ratio such as the paid share mixes figures that OpenAI happened to publish on the same day.

How we compiled these statistics
We read OpenAI's announcements from September 15, 2025 to October 7, 2026, its ChatGPT pricing page, and two OpenAI help center articles on October 21, 2026. Each figure is quoted as OpenAI worded it, with the date of the post. Growth rates, annual plan costs and the paid share are our arithmetic on those figures and are labeled as such. We did not use third-party traffic estimates or analyst revenue models.
