How to Clone Your Voice With AI in 2026

How to clone your voice with AI in 2026: clean audio, consent, and the right plan. Instant clones start at $6 a month on Starter, Professional at $22 on Creator.

To clone your voice with AI, record clean audio, confirm you have the right to the voice, and test a line before you rely on it. On ElevenLabs, an Instant Voice Clone needs at least one minute of audio and starts on Starter at $6 a month. A Professional Voice Clone needs an hour and sits on Creator at $22 a month. Both prices were checked on ElevenLabs' pricing page in October 2026.

Toolradar data: the AI voice ranking we publish evaluated 125 tools, updated October 2026, so there is no shortage of options. This guide uses ElevenLabs as the worked example because it publishes its cloning steps, audio rules and plan limits in its own docs. For the full field, see our best AI voice generators comparison. Check any other tool's docs for the same three points: audio rules, a consent step, and a test before you publish.

Which plan you need

ElevenLabs' pricing table makes the choice straightforward. The Free plan includes 10,000 credits, about 10 minutes of speech, and its table lists no voice cloning. Starter is $6 a month, or $60 billed yearly, and adds Instant Voice Cloning with 30,000 credits, about 30 minutes. Creator is $22 a month and adds one Professional Voice Clone on top of 121,000 credits, about 121 minutes.

Plan Monthly price Voice cloning Credits (about minutes of speech)
Free $0 None listed 10,000 (about 10)
Starter $6, or $60 billed yearly Instant Voice Cloning 30,000 (about 30)
Creator $22 Instant, plus one Professional Voice Clone 121,000 (about 121)

Pick Starter when a short clone is enough, such as a voiceover for a weekly video. Pick Creator when the voice has to be a professional clone, since that is the only tier on this table that includes one. The pricing page also shows $11 for Creator's first month. The regular price is $22, so budget for that after month one. For the full plan ladder, read our ElevenLabs pricing breakdown and the ElevenLabs review. Record audio the clone can learn from

An Instant Voice Clone needs at least one minute, and ElevenLabs recommends about one to two minutes of clear audio, as its Instant Voice Cloning guide sets out. More does not help much. The FAQ says recordings past two to three minutes yield little improvement, so spend your effort on quality rather than length. A Professional Voice Clone asks for far more: at least an hour of training audio, and ideally close to three hours. That gap sets how much recording time to block out before you start.

Six rules decide whether the sample is usable:

  • One speaker only. A second voice in the file, even faint, teaches the model two people, and the clone will drift between them.
  • No reverb or background noise. Record in a room with soft furnishings rather than a bare, echoing one, and turn off the fan.
  • Consistent tone, pitch and volume. A clone learns your average delivery. A tired read and a cheerful read pull the result in two directions.
  • One good microphone beats more clips. ElevenLabs favors a clean recording over adding more files of mixed quality, so a short, consistent set is a better bet than a long, uneven one.
  • Export as MP3 at 192 kbps or higher. The guide's floor is 128 kbps, but the FAQ recommends 192. The docs say uncompressed WAV usually does not improve results.
  • Aim for loudness between -23 dB and -18 dB RMS, with a true peak at -3 dB. Most audio editors show this on a loudness meter, so check it before you upload.

Create an Instant Voice Clone

  1. Open Voices in ElevenLabs and click the plus icon.
  2. Select Instant Voice Clone.
  3. Upload your audio or record it, following the on-screen instructions.
  4. Name and label the clone, tick the consent confirmation, then click Save voice.
  5. To use it, open Voices, choose My Voices, and click Use voice.

The consent tick is easy to click through. ElevenLabs asks you to confirm that you have the right and consent to clone the voice before it saves, so the checkbox is a statement you are making about the voice, not a formality. Read it before you tick it.

Create a Professional Voice Clone

  1. Go to Voices, click Create Voice, and choose Professional Voice Clone.
  2. Upload samples or record them in the interface, then check the feedback on sample length.
  3. Optional: use Audio settings to remove background noise or separate speakers.
  4. Verify your voice. ElevenLabs advises verifying on the same or similar equipment you used for the samples, and reading each verification line only once before you press Stop.
  5. Wait for fine-tuning to finish. You can track progress in My Voices.
  6. Open the Personal tab in Voices and click Use next to your clone.

Verification is where a clean setup pays off, and the Professional Voice Cloning guide covers the same steps in full. It runs on the same kind of equipment as the samples, so record it in the same room with the same microphone. Free and Starter have no Professional Voice Clone slots, and Creator gives you one. If you drop below Creator, the clone is unusable until you upgrade again, so check your tier before you downgrade.

Consent: what you may clone

ElevenLabs' rules come down to four points, and each one changes what you can do with the output.

  • Your own voice. The docs say professional clones are for your own voice only.
  • Someone else's voice. Even with their consent, the docs say you cannot make a professional clone of another person's voice. An instant clone still asks you to confirm consent, so that confirmation is yours to back up.
  • Traceability. The FAQ says all audio generated by ElevenLabs models can be traced back to the user responsible for it, so treat your account like a signature.
  • Clones stay in the account. You cannot download a clone as a standalone file. An API key lets third-party services generate speech with the voices in your account, so guard that key as carefully as a password.

Before you publish clone audio, read the terms for the plan you use.

Test the clone, then fix a flat result

Test with lines the clone has not heard in your recordings, because reading back the sentences you recorded flatters the result. Use a new line with a question, a list and a number, since those show whether the intonation holds up.

Each test also spends the monthly credit pool. On Starter, 30,000 credits is about 30 minutes of speech, so run short tests first and save the long renders for the final file.

If the clone sounds flat, the cause is usually the sample: background noise, reverb, mixed microphones or an inconsistent read. Re-record in one room with one microphone, in the tone you plan to use on air, and create a new clone from the better file. Adding more mixed files does not fix the underlying problem. If what you need is a voice without cloning, the text-to-speech software list covers the tools, and the free AI voice generators page covers the no-cost options.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clone my voice for free?

Not with ElevenLabs. The free plan gives 10,000 credits, about 10 minutes of speech, and its pricing table lists no voice cloning. The cheapest route is Starter at $6 a month, or $60 billed yearly, which includes Instant Voice Cloning. For voices without cloning, the free options are on our free AI voice generators page.

How much audio does a clone need?

An Instant Voice Clone needs at least one minute, and about one to two minutes of clear audio is the recommended range. Recordings past two to three minutes add little. A Professional Voice Clone needs at least an hour of training audio, and ideally close to three hours.

Can I clone someone else's voice?

Not as a professional clone. ElevenLabs' docs say professional clones are for your own voice, even with the other person's consent. An instant clone asks you to confirm consent before it saves, so only clone a voice you have permission to use, and keep that permission on file.

What if my clone sounds flat?

The samples are the usual cause: background noise, reverb, mixed microphones or an inconsistent read. Re-record in one quiet room with one microphone, match the tone you plan to use, and create a new clone from the better file.

Does a clone stop working if I downgrade?

A Professional Voice Clone does. You cannot use it on a plan below Creator until you upgrade to Creator or above again. For instant clones, check the plan terms before you change tiers.

How we checked this

We read ElevenLabs' pricing page and its Instant and Professional Voice Cloning docs in October 2026. The pricing page shows dollar signs with no currency code, so we read the figures as US dollars. We did not create a clone for this page, so the audio and consent advice comes from ElevenLabs' own guidance, not from our own test. The 125-tool count comes from the Toolradar AI voice ranking, updated October 2026.
