TL;DR

Cartesia is the cheapest per generated minute: its Pro plan includes instant cloning for $5 a month, about 4 cents a minute, and its Startup plan drops to about 3 cents. ElevenLabs is the clone we would start with when it has to pass as the real speaker, and its professional clone sits on the Creator plan at $22 a month, about 18 cents per generated minute. Developers who want no license fee can self-host Chatterbox or OpenVoice, both MIT-licensed, and carry the consent check themselves.

Searches for voice cloning mix three jobs: a free test of your own voice, a paid clone for a podcast or course, and a developer who wants to run the model. The cost question settles most of them, so this page starts there.

Every vendor bills in a different unit, from credits and characters to download minutes, so we converted each allowance into dollars per minute of audio. Then we checked what each vendor requires before a clone is saved. Vendor pages were read on 10 October 2026.

Top Pick

ElevenLabs

Our first pick when the clone has to pass as the real speaker. Creator includes about 121 minutes a month, which works out to about 18 cents a generated minute.

Pricing
Free has no cloning; Starter $6/mo for an instant clone; Creator $22/mo adds one professional clone

Best for: Creators and narrators who need the most convincing clone and a clear consent trail

Pros

  • Instant cloning from Starter, and the commercial license starts on the same tier
  • Creator adds one professional clone and about 121 minutes of speech a month
  • Instant cloning asks you to confirm consent before a clone is saved

Cons

  • Starter's 30,000 credits cover only about 30 minutes, so regular narration pushes you to Creator
  • Professional cloning covers only your own voice, even with another person's consent
2 Cartesia logo

Cartesia

The cheapest paid clone on this list. Pro is about 4 cents a minute and Startup or Scale about 3 cents, using the minute counts the pricing page states.

Pricing
Pro $5/mo for instant cloning; Startup $49/mo adds two professional clone slots

Best for: Developers and small teams that want the lowest cost per generated minute with a paid clone

Pros

  • Pro includes instant voice cloning and a commercial use license
  • Startup at $49 a month gives two professional clone slots and about 1,667 minutes
  • The pricing page says training a professional voice clone is free

Cons

  • Pro has instant cloning only, so a professional clone means moving up to Startup
  • Credits run at 750 to 800 per minute of audio, so a heavy month can use up the 100,000-credit Pro pool quickly
3 Typecast logo

Typecast

Generation and playback are unlimited, and credits are used only when you download audio. Basic works out to about 14 cents per downloaded minute.

Pricing
Basic $5/mo with one instant clone slot; Plus $19/mo adds one professional clone slot

Best for: Voice actors and small studios that test many takes and pay only for the audio they download

Pros

  • Credits are charged only on download, so previewing a clone costs nothing extra
  • Basic includes one instant clone slot, the cheapest Typecast plan that clones
  • Business at $69 a month gives 10 clone slots and about 250 minutes of downloads

Cons

  • Plus is the costliest tier per minute, about 38 cents a downloaded minute
  • Free has no cloning and only 3,000 lifetime credits, about 5 minutes
4 Kits.ai logo

Kits.ai

Conversions are unlimited from Starter, so the cost is the download allowance. At Starter, 15 download minutes for $10 works out to about 67 cents a minute.

Pricing
Starter $10/mo with instant cloning; Producer $30/mo adds professional cloning and 60 download minutes

Best for: Makers who test many conversions and pay only for the minutes they download

Pros

  • Conversions are unlimited on Starter and Producer, so testing costs nothing extra
  • Producer includes professional cloning and 60 download minutes
  • Professional at $60 a month removes the download cap and includes unlimited cloning

Cons

  • Starter is the costliest per minute on this list, about 67 cents a download minute
  • Kits.ai's pricing card and FAQ disagree on which tier includes professional cloning, so confirm before you pay
5 Murf AI logo

Murf AI

The cloning page routes buyers to sales, so the cost is not published. Murf is the most direct of the vendors here about the consent risk.

Pricing
Professional voice cloning is quote-only; the cloning page shows no price

Best for: Companies that want a cloned voice inside a studio editor and can buy through a sales call

Pros

  • Its cloning page warns that voice duplication without consent can be considered illegal
  • Accepts pre-recorded audio or a recording made directly in the studio
  • The cloning page describes Professional Voice Cloning as production-ready

Cons

  • No price on the cloning page, so you cannot compare cost per minute before a sales call
  • The page does not name the plan that includes cloning
6 Chatterbox logo

Chatterbox

Zero-shot cloning from a short reference clip, with no per-minute bill. The trade-off is that you host it and every generated file carries a watermark.

Pricing
Free and MIT-licensed; you pay only for the compute to run it yourself

Best for: Developers who want a clone with no license fee and can host it themselves

Pros

  • MIT-licensed, so the model has no license fee and the per-minute cost is your own compute
  • Clones from a short reference clip; the usage example expects about 10 seconds
  • Generated files carry a built-in watermark that the project says survives MP3 compression and editing

Cons

  • You host and tune it yourself, with no support line or consent workflow
  • The project page states no consent requirement, and its misuse disclaimer reads "Don't use this model to do bad things."
7 OpenVoice logo

OpenVoice

Zero-shot cross-lingual cloning under MIT, so no license fee for commercial use. The project page sets no consent or responsible-use rule of its own.

Pricing
Free under the MIT license for commercial and research use; self-hosted

Best for: Developers building a commercial product who want a free zero-shot clone they can run

Pros

  • V1 and V2 are both MIT-licensed and free for commercial and research use, per the project page
  • Zero-shot cross-lingual cloning copies tone color from a reference clip
  • No per-minute bill from the project; the cost is your own compute

Cons

  • No hosted app or dashboard, so you need engineering time to run it
  • No consent statement on the project page, so the consent check falls to you

What it is

A voice clone is a synthetic copy of one person's voice, built from recorded samples and then used to read new text. Cloning is usually a paid-plan feature, so the real cost is the cheapest plan that includes it, not the price of the cheapest tier.

If you only need a stock voice, our AI voice generator list covers text-to-speech without cloning. If the clone is for translated audio, our AI dubbing tools list compares the tools that do that.

Why it matters

In cloning, the pricing page and the consent rules both decide what you can publish. A free plan may give you minutes but no clone. A paid plan may give you a clone but a commercial license only at a higher tier. And some vendors limit whose voice you may clone at all.

Toolradar data: our AI voice ranking evaluated 125 AI voice tools and is updated for October 2026, and this page keeps the seven tools that sell or give away a clone you can actually make.

If your budget is tight, the cheaper ElevenLabs alternatives guide and the ElevenLabs pricing breakdown cover the cost side in more depth.

Key features to look for

Cost per generated minute
Each vendor's own minute count divided into its plan price. ElevenLabs Creator works out to about 18 cents a minute, Cartesia's plans to about 3 or 4 cents, and Typecast Basic to about 14 cents per downloaded minute.
Clone tiers
Instant clones need a short sample and sit on cheaper plans. Professional clones need more audio, a higher tier and, on ElevenLabs, a verification step before the clone is trained.
Consent before saving
ElevenLabs asks you to confirm consent before a clone is saved, and Murf warns that cloning without consent can be illegal. The two open models we checked state no consent rule at all.

Pricing

Methodology: we kept seven tools that sell or give away a voice clone and whose cloning terms we could read on the vendor's own page on 10 October 2026. Price per minute is the plan price divided by the minutes the vendor states for that plan, on monthly billing.

Typecast and Kits.ai bill downloads rather than generation, so we divided by download minutes. Murf publishes no clone price, so it has no per-minute figure.

Vendor pages show a dollar sign with no currency code, and we read them as US dollars.

Mistakes to avoid
×Comparing credits as if they were minutes. ElevenLabs counts about 1,000 credits per minute on its own numbers, while Cartesia counts 750 to 800 credits per minute, so the same credit total means different audio on each.
×Buying a plan before checking the clone type. ElevenLabs Starter clones instantly, but a professional clone starts on Creator, and Cartesia Pro includes instant cloning only.
×Assuming a free plan can clone. The free tiers of ElevenLabs, Cartesia, Typecast and Kits.ai list no voice cloning, so the first clone costs money on each of them.
×Cloning a voice you cannot prove you may use. ElevenLabs will not create a professional clone of anyone but you, even with consent.
Expert tips
→Price the minutes you will download, not the minutes you preview. Typecast and Kits.ai bill downloads, so testing a clone costs little, while ElevenLabs and Cartesia bill credits on every character generated.
→Record to the vendor's standard before you pay. ElevenLabs asks for at least 1 minute for an instant clone and recommends at least 30 minutes for a professional one, which fits Creator's single professional slot.
→Keep a consent file. Save the recording, the consent confirmation at the moment of saving, and the invoice for the plan that made the clone. If a client or a platform asks, one folder answers it.

The bottom line

Start with ElevenLabs Creator if the clone has to pass as the real speaker: $22 a month, one professional clone and the consent step built in. Start with Cartesia Pro if cost per minute matters more than polish, since its entry plan includes instant cloning.

Startup at $49 a month adds two professional clone slots at the lowest per-minute rate on this list.

Developers who want no license fee should self-host Chatterbox or OpenVoice and accept the hosting work and the consent check that falls to them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest AI voice cloning tool in 2026?

Among paid tools with a published clone price, Cartesia is cheapest per generated minute: Pro, its entry tier with instant cloning, works out to about 4 cents, and its larger plans come in lower. Chatterbox and OpenVoice cost no license fee, but you pay for the compute and the hosting. Checked on vendor pages in October 2026.

Can I clone my voice for free?

Yes, with a self-hosted open model such as Chatterbox or OpenVoice. The free plans of ElevenLabs, Cartesia, Typecast and Kits.ai list no voice cloning, so a hosted free clone is not available on those tools.

Can I sell audio made with a cloned voice?

It depends on the tool. ElevenLabs lists a commercial license from Starter, Cartesia lists commercial use from Pro, and the MIT-licensed open models, OpenVoice and Chatterbox, carry no license fee for commercial use. The Typecast and Kits.ai pricing pages do not state commercial rights, so read their terms before you sell audio.

Do I need the speaker's consent?

Treat consent as required. ElevenLabs asks you to confirm that you have the right and consent to clone a voice before it is saved, and its professional clone covers only your own voice. Murf's cloning page says voice duplication without consent can be considered illegal.

How much audio does a clone need?

ElevenLabs asks for at least 1 minute of audio for an instant clone. For a professional clone it recommends at least 30 minutes as a bare minimum and closer to 2 to 3 hours for the best result.

Why is Resemble AI not on this list?

Resemble AI's voice cloning page says the company has stopped offering voice generation as a commercial product, so Resemble's commercial service is left out. Chatterbox, its open-source model, stays on the list because it is free to self-host. The pricing and cloning terms on this page come from the seven tools that sell or give away a clone.
