Vector databases all store embeddings and return nearest neighbors. They do not sell the same unit. Pinecone Standard is a $50 floor plus read and write units. Weaviate Flex is a $45 infrastructure floor plus dimensions and storage.

What it is
A vector database indexes high-dimensional embeddings so you can search by meaning, not by keyword. You send a vector, it returns neighbors. Managed products run the index for you. Open-source products run on your machines. Some clouds now attach a vector index to the rest of the platform (Vectorize on Cloudflare). The category is infrastructure for RAG and agents, not a chat UI.
Why it matters
The bill is the floor plus the meter. Pinecone Builder at $20 is flat until you outgrow it. Standard's $50 is a minimum that usage eats through, then RUs show up. Weaviate Flex's $45 is a cluster floor. A hobby RAG app on Starter or Chroma costs $0.
The same app on Standard because someone wanted SSO is a $50 habit. That is the decision, not whose ANN chart won a blog benchmark.

Run Qdrant yourself if you will operate it; confirm Cloud on their site. Use Cloudflare Vectorize when the app is already on Workers. This is infrastructure, not an avatar tool.
