NotebookLM Review 2026
What NotebookLM, now Gemini Notebook on Google's pages, costs on each plan, what the free tier caps, and how it compares with Claude, ChatGPT, Readwise and Obsidian.
NotebookLM is free to start, and the paid plans only raise its caps. The Standard tier costs nothing with a Gmail account and allows 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook. Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month doubles both caps, and Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month raises them to 500 notebooks and 300 sources per notebook. Google's own pages now call the product Gemini Notebook, and the notebooklm.google address redirects to notebook.google.
Most people should stay on the free tier until one notebook reaches 50 sources. The closest alternatives are Claude, whose Projects are on its free plan and on Pro at $17 a month billed annually, and Readwise, for people whose research is mostly highlights.
Key factsBest for: Students and researchers who work from a fixed set of…
- Google's source-grounded research notebook, free to start, with caps that rise sharply on paid tiers.
- Free tier: Standard, free with a Gmail account
- Sources per notebook (Standard): 50
- Notebooks per user (Pro): 500
- Workspace Audio Overviews: 3 a day (Starter), 20 a day (Standard and Plus)
Pros
- The Standard tier costs nothing with a Gmail account, with 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook.
- Caps are published per tier, so the upgrade decision comes down to a number you can check.
- Pro removes watermarks, except where Google applies one automatically in India, South Korea and Vietnam.
Cons
- Free notebooks cap at 50 sources, which a large research project outgrows quickly.
- Model access is tiered: standard on Standard and Plus, higher on Pro, highest on Ultra.
- Google says every limit is subject to change, and its own pages now use a different product name.
Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 1,538 AI assistants, and 61% of them are free, freemium or open source. The median cheapest paid plan across the 492 that publish a price is $16 a month (toolradar.com/best/ai-assistants, October 2026).
In that crowded field, NotebookLM is a research notebook rather than a general chatbot, and its value depends on how many sources you need to hold.
This review covers what the product is, what each Google plan costs and caps, where it is strong and weak, and which alternatives fit.
For Google's broader assistant, see our Gemini review.
The product's own profile is on Toolradar, next to ChatGPT, and the notes tool category is covered in our best AI note-taking apps.
What is NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook)?
NotebookLM is Google's AI research notebook. You create a notebook, add sources, and ask questions about them. Google's pages describe it as an AI research tool and thinking partner, and the numbers that matter are how many notebooks you can keep and how many sources each notebook can hold.
The product now lives at notebook.google.
The old notebooklm.google address redirects there, and Google's plan pages, help center and Workspace price list all say Gemini Notebook. We have not seen a Google announcement of the rename, so check the redirect yourself before you buy. This review uses both names so you can find it under either one.
How NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) works
Start on the free Standard tier with a Gmail account. Add sources to a notebook, then ask questions across them.
Plus, Pro and Ultra each lift the number of notebooks and sources per notebook above Standard, while Workspace Standard, Plus and Enterprise plans get five times the notebooks, chat queries and sources per notebook of the Starter plan, plus chat modes.
The Workspace caps on Audio Overviews are the clearest sign of how Google meters the product: Starter gets up to 3 a day, and Standard, Plus and Enterprise get up to 20 a day.
Google says daily quotas reset after 24 hours and monthly quotas after 30 days. Build your workflow around the published numbers, not around a figure you read in a forum.

NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) pricing
Methodology: prices and caps were verified on these vendor pages in October 2026: Google's US subscriptions page, the Gemini Notebook plans and limits article, Google's Workspace pricing page, Claude pricing, Readwise pricing and Obsidian pricing.
The Toolradar figures come from our own catalog. Where a vendor page would not show a USD price, we say so instead of estimating.
On the free tier a notebook holds 50 sources. Google AI Plus doubles that to 100 for a few dollars a month.
Google AI Pro is the first tier that removes the watermark, and it lifts the notebook cap to 500 and the source cap to 300 per notebook.
Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99 a month, with a $199.99 tier also listed, and it is built for people who hit Pro's caps as a matter of routine.
Watch out: daily and monthly quotas reset on a schedule, and every limit on the help page can change.
Watermark removal is a Pro-tier feature, and a visible watermark still appears automatically in India, South Korea and Vietnam. Google's Workspace price list is in euros, so we do not quote a team price in US dollars from it.
The Gemini Enterprise row in the pricing table is the USD business figure, starting at $21 per seat a month for the Business edition.

NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) pros and cons
What we like
- The Standard tier costs nothing with a Gmail account, with 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook.
- Caps are published per tier, so the upgrade decision comes down to a number you can check.
- Pro removes watermarks, except where Google applies one automatically in India, South Korea and Vietnam.
What could be better
- Free notebooks cap at 50 sources, which a large research project outgrows quickly.
- Model access is tiered: standard on Standard and Plus, higher on Pro, highest on Ultra.
- Google says every limit is subject to change, and its own pages now use a different product name.
Who NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) is for
Solo researchers and students with one project at a time should start free. The Standard tier covers 100 notebooks with 50 sources each, which holds most single projects.
If you want a chat habit for writing, coding and everyday questions, a general assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT fits that job better, and NotebookLM complements it.
Power users who hit 50 sources in a notebook should compare Plus with Pro.
Plus gives you 100 sources and 200 notebooks, which covers most growing projects. Pro earns its higher price when you run several large projects at once or need watermark removal.
Teams on Google Workspace get Gemini Notebook inside the plan they already pay for.
Teams that want business controls should look at Gemini Enterprise, which starts at $21 per seat a month for the Business edition. For a broader view of tools that answer from documents, see our best AI search engines.
Best NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) alternatives
If NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) is not the right fit, these are the closest options.
| Tool | Best for | Starts at | |
|---|---|---|---|
| NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) | Students and researchers who work from a fixed set of documents and want a free start. | Free with a Gmail account | Visit → |
| Claude | Writers and analysts who want a general assistant with project folders for documents and long-form work. | Free plan with up to 5 Projects | Visit → |
| ChatGPT | People who want one general assistant for writing, research and everyday questions, not only document work. | Check current paid plan prices on chatgpt | Visit → |
| Readwise | Readers who highlight articles and books and want those highlights to resurface and export to notes. | Full $9.99/mo billed annually ($12.99 monthly) | Visit → |
| Obsidian | Note-takers who want a knowledge base they control and pay for sync only if needed. | Free without limits | Visit → |
The bottom line
NotebookLM is worth starting on the free tier, and worth paying for only when one project outgrows 50 sources. Plus is the value step for a growing project, and Pro is for heavy research or for watermark removal, which Google still limits in India, South Korea and Vietnam.
The honest trade-off is that the product is a notebook, not a general assistant, so a general chatbot may fit a daily habit better.
