An AI video editor, for this comparison, is an editing app that uses AI to cut, caption, clean up audio or generate footage, so the human spends less time on the timeline.
The core difference: transcript or timeline
Descript edits video by editing a document. Its plan list calls this text-based editing: you delete a sentence in the transcript and the clip goes with it. Every paid plan includes Underlord, Descript's AI co-editor, plus tools such as Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words and Create Clips. For a weekly interview show, that means the cut happens in the words, which is the slow part of talk content.
CapCut is a template and effects editor that has added AI generation. Its pricing page leads with Seedance video generation and monthly AI credits, and its help center lists premium templates, effects, fonts, transitions and AI tools as the Pro unlocks. For a creator posting several short clips a week, the value is the library: a trend template and its effects ready to export.
That is the real choice, and it is about workflow before price. A podcaster on CapCut will scrub a timeline to find every "um", while a TikTok creator on Descript pays for transcription hours that a 30-second clip never uses.
What you pay, billed the same way
Compare like with like: both vendors discount annual billing. Descript says annual saves up to 35% over monthly. CapCut prints a separate yearly price for Pro and Ultra, so the honest comparison puts annual against annual and monthly against monthly.
| Plan | Billed yearly, per year | Billed monthly, 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| Descript Hobbyist | $192 | $288 |
| Descript Creator | $288 | $420 |
| Descript Business (per person) | $600 | $780 |
| CapCut Pro | $179.99 | $239.88 |
| CapCut Ultra | $900 | $948 |
Descript prices per person per month and CapCut prints the yearly figure, so the Descript totals are 12 times the printed monthly rate, our arithmetic. CapCut Pro is the cheapest paid entry on either billing, about $12 a year below Descript Hobbyist on annual billing and about $48 below on monthly billing.
The CapCut price is a reference until you sign in. Its pricing page says displayed prices are for reference only and that final pricing, taxes and offers appear after sign-in. Mobile subscriptions go through Apple or Google, and CapCut's help center says plan changes and payment methods for those are managed in the device's account settings, not in CapCut. Buy on the web if you want the plan you see here.
What each plan meters
Descript meters recorded hours; CapCut meters AI work. That decides which bill grows when you make more video.
On Descript, Hobbyist includes 10 media hours a month, Creator 30 and Business 40, where a media hour is imported or recorded media that Descript processes. AI credits run 400, 800 and 1,500 a month on those plans. Top-ups exist only on Creator and Business: AI credits cost $35 for 350, and media hours $25 for five, per Descript's top-up article. A Hobbyist user who runs out mid-month cannot top up and has to upgrade.
On CapCut, Pro includes 1,200 monthly AI credits and Ultra 8,645, with 1 TB of storage on both, and you can buy more credits. Seedance video generation is priced per second: on Pro the page lists Seedance 2.5 from $0.12 a second and Seedance 2.0 Mini at 480p from $0.007 a second, both as first-month prices. Generated video is where a CapCut bill grows; ordinary editing on Pro does not draw on a time allowance in the plan list.

Three buyers, three answers
Our analysis: we costed three typical buyers on each vendor's printed prices as of October 21, 2026, using annual billing. Totals are our arithmetic.
| Buyer | Descript | CapCut | Cheaper fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Podcaster recording 12 hours a month | Creator, $288 a year (Hobbyist stops at 10 hours with no top-ups) | Pro, the same yearly price, with no transcript-first editing | Descript, for the workflow |
| Short-form creator, 4 clips a week, no AI generation | Hobbyist, $192 a year | Pro, $179.99 a year | CapCut |
| Three-person content team | Creator for 3 seats, $864 a year | Teams, priced per seat after sign-in | Get CapCut's Teams quote first |
The podcaster pays more on Descript and gets the right tool. Twelve recorded hours a month overflow Hobbyist's 10, and Hobbyist cannot buy top-ups, so Creator is the realistic plan at $96 a year more than Hobbyist. CapCut is cheaper on paper but leaves the cut on the timeline.
The short-form creator saves a little on CapCut and gets the library. Premium templates, effects and 4K or 60fps export sit on Pro, and CapCut's help center says a project using Pro assets cannot be exported without the watermark unless you subscribe.
For a team, Descript's math is simple and CapCut's is not. Descript Creator scales to three people, each billed separately; Business scales to five and adds Brand Studio, translation and dubbing in 30-plus languages and priority support. CapCut's Teams plan starts at $12.49 a seat per month for two seats on monthly billing, and the page says signing in can lower it, so ask for the team price before you compare.
Where each one falls short
Descript's weak spots: Hobbyist caps you at 10 recorded hours with no way to buy more, the free plan exports at 720p, and 4K needs Creator. Its stock media library is unlimited only from Creator. It is not built for effects-heavy social edits.
CapCut's weak spots: prices shown are a reference until sign-in, mobile billing runs through the app stores, and the free plan watermarks any export that uses Pro assets. Seedance generation is priced per second, and the printed rates are first-month prices, so heavy generation adds to the bill. Its transcript-based editing exists as a tool page, but the plan list sells templates and AI, not a text-first workflow.
Which should you pay for?
Pick Descript if most of your output is speech: podcasts, webinars, course videos or interview clips. Start on Hobbyist if you record under 10 hours a month and Creator if you record more or need 4K. Our Descript pricing guide covers every plan and top-up, and the Descript review covers fit.
Pick CapCut if most of your output is short social video built from templates and effects, and you want the lowest paid entry. Our CapCut pricing guide and CapCut review go deeper on plans and credits.
If neither fits, the best AI video editors ranking and cheaper Descript alternatives widen the list. Creators who only need a free tool can start with free AI video makers, and anyone dubbing for other markets should read how to translate a video with AI. The wider kit is in AI tools for video creators, and Toolradar's side-by-side page is CapCut vs Descript.
How we compared
We read Descript's pricing page and plan comparison, Descript's top-up help article, CapCut's pricing page and CapCut's help articles on joining Pro, export prompts and Pro-only features on October 21, 2026. Yearly totals multiply the printed monthly rates where a vendor prints no yearly figure; the three buyers are illustrative workloads. How we judge tools is on the AIpresso about page.
