CapCut Review
CapCut's Free, Pro, Ultra and Teams plans priced side by side, what the AI credits buy in generated video, and when Descript, VEED or OpusClip fits better.
CapCut Pro is worth it in 2026 if you post short social video every week and want the AI tools and premium templates, and it is worth buying on yearly billing. Pro is $19.99 a month paid monthly or $179.99 a year, which works out to about $15 a month. It adds 1,200 AI credits a month, every premium template and 1 TB of cloud storage. Ultra is $79 a month or $900 a year for 8,645 credits, and Teams starts at $12.49 per seat a month for two people.
The free plan stays useful: it keeps the basic editing tools and free templates, so a casual editor can skip Pro entirely. Prices were read on CapCut's pricing page on 19 October 2026, and CapCut labels them a reference that can change at sign-in. Descript is the better buy for talking-head video edited from a transcript, VEED for browser editing with subtitles, and OpusClip for cutting shorts out of long recordings.
Key factsBest for: Social creators who edit short vertical video weekly and…
- A free mobile-first editor whose paid tiers sell AI credits, templates and storage rather than editing basics.
- Free plan: Yes, basic editing tools and free templates
- Paid plans: Pro, Ultra and Teams, billed monthly or yearly
- AI credits: A monthly allowance on every paid plan, with top-ups
- Cloud storage: 1 TB on every paid plan
Pros
- Free plan keeps a multi-layer timeline, keyframes, chroma key and exports up to 8K, per CapCut's own guide.
- Pro bundles 1,200 AI credits a month, all premium templates and cloud storage that free users lost in 2024.
- For two editors, Teams costs less per seat than a single Pro plan and adds a shared brand kit.
Cons
- CapCut calls web prices a reference; final price, taxes and offers appear only after sign-in.
- Free has had no cloud storage since August 2024, and cancelling takes effect the following month.

CapCut is the editor most short-form creators already have on their phone, and the question is no longer whether the free app is good enough but whether the paid tiers earn their price. The answer turns on how much AI you use, because the editing basics stay free while credits, premium templates and cloud storage sit behind Pro.
This review prices each CapCut plan, works out what yearly billing saves and what a second of generated video costs on Pro and Ultra, and sets CapCut next to Descript, VEED and OpusClip.

Toolradar data: CapCut is the second most compared tool in video editing on Toolradar, among 49 tools with 20 or more compare-page visits, and it is listed as an alternative to 26 other tools, as of October 2026.
The record is CapCut on Toolradar, and the category figures sit on video editing statistics.
How we compared: plan prices, credits and limits come from each vendor's own pricing page, read on 19 October 2026, and CapCut's feature split comes from its own Standard vs Pro comparison. Dupple has no test lab, so every claim below comes from those published pages.
What is CapCut?
CapCut is a video editor from ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, that runs on phones, desktop and the web. It launched in 2019 as JianYing and was later rebranded for global users. The pitch is a full editor at no cost: a multi-layer timeline, keyframe animation, chroma key, filters, transitions, text and stickers.
The paid tiers sell AI and assets, not the timeline. CapCut's own Standard vs Pro page puts the auto caption generator, background remover, motion tracking, noise reduction, AI video, AI music and AI image tools on the paid side, along with premium templates, fonts, effects and stock music.
The current plan card leans hard on AI video. Pro and Ultra both draw on the Seedance video models, and the card lists how many seconds of Seedance 2.0 Mini each plan's credits can produce. That makes CapCut part editor, part video generator, and the two halves price very differently.
How CapCut works
You import clips into the editor on any device, cut them on the timeline, then add captions, effects, music and templates before export. CapCut's own guide says both the free and paid versions export up to 8K, so resolution is not the reason to upgrade. Projects follow you across mobile, desktop and web when you sign in.
Credits are the meter that matters on paid plans. Pro and Ultra each refill a monthly credit allowance, Ultra's far larger, and both plans can buy more. Pro's card says its credits generate up to 240 seconds of Seedance 2.0 Mini video at 720p, or 600 seconds at 480p; Ultra's card says 1,700 seconds at 720p or 4,300 at 480p. New accounts get 200 welcome credits to try Seedance before paying.
Storage is the second meter. CapCut ended the free tier's 1 GB of cloud storage in August 2024, according to its own comparison page, so a free user keeps projects on the device. Every paid plan restores cloud storage, which is the practical reason a creator who edits on a phone and finishes on a laptop moves to Pro.
CapCut key features
CapCut pricing
CapCut publishes four plans on its pricing page, read on 19 October 2026: Free, Pro, Ultra and Teams. The page states that displayed prices are for reference and that final pricing, taxes and offers appear after sign-in, and CapCut's own guide adds that prices vary by region, platform and promotion. Treat the figures below as the web list price.
Yearly billing saves $59.89 on Pro: twelve monthly payments come to $239.88 against the yearly price, so a full year on monthly billing costs a third more. On Ultra the gap is smaller: $948 for twelve months at the monthly rate against $900 a year, a $48 saving.
The credit math favors Ultra for heavy generation. On monthly billing, Pro's 240 seconds of 720p Seedance 2.0 Mini work out to about 8 cents a second if every credit goes to video, and Ultra's 1,700 seconds to under 5 cents.
Ultra only pays off if Pro's 4 minutes of 720p generation run out every month; an editor who mostly cuts real footage never gets near that ceiling.
Teams is the quiet bargain. At $12.49 per seat a month for two seats on monthly billing, two creators pay $24.98 a month for Pro features, a credit allowance each and a brand kit, against $39.98 for two separate Pro subscriptions.
The yearly two-seat option lists $107.50 per seat.

Who CapCut is for
Buy CapCut Pro on yearly billing if you publish to TikTok, Reels or Shorts every week and keep reaching for premium templates, auto captions or background removal. Its cloud storage also fixes the main pain of the free plan for anyone who edits across phone and laptop.
Stay on Free if you mostly trim clips, add text and export, because the timeline, keyframes and 8K export are already there.
Buy Ultra only if AI video generation is the job rather than an extra, and Teams as soon as two people edit for the same brand, since it costs less per seat than a single Pro plan.
Skip CapCut if you edit long interviews or podcasts by transcript (Descript), want a browser editor with per-user team billing (VEED), or need to turn long videos into clips automatically (OpusClip). Captions alone are compared in our AI subtitle generators guide.

The bottom line
CapCut Pro is worth it when AI tools and premium templates are part of your weekly routine, and yearly billing is the way to buy it: the yearly price is about a quarter below twelve monthly payments. The free plan remains one of the most complete free editors available, so many casual creators never need to pay.
Ultra makes sense only for heavy AI video generation, and Teams is the cheapest route to Pro features for two or more editors.
Choose Descript for transcript-driven editing (prices in our Descript review and Descript pricing breakdown), VEED or Kapwing for a browser editor a team can share, and OpusClip to cut shorts from long recordings, covered in our OpusClip review.
If generated footage is the goal, compare CapCut's credits with dedicated generators in best AI video generators and Veo pricing.
Creators building a full stack should read AI tools for video creators, and anyone localizing clips how to translate a video with AI.
