NotebookLM Pricing 2026: Gemini Notebook Free vs Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra
NotebookLM, now Gemini Notebook, is free with 100 notebooks and 50 sources each. Google AI Plus is $4.99/mo, Pro $19.99/mo, Ultra from $99.99/mo.

NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook, is free: any personal Google account gets 100 notebooks with up to 50 sources each. Paying means buying a Google AI plan, not a Notebook subscription: Plus at $4.99 a month doubles the usage limits and allows 100 sources per notebook, Pro at $19.99 a month gives four times the standard usage and 300 sources, and Ultra starts at $99.99 a month.
Google renamed the product and moved it to notebook.google, and the plan limits sit in the Gemini Notebook plans help page. The US prices come from the Google AI plans page. All three were read on October 21, 2026, and the yearly totals and per-dollar figures below are our arithmetic on those monthly prices.
Toolradar data: among the 38 AI research tools with a comparable monthly entry price on Toolradar's AI research statistics page, as of October 20, 2026, the $4.99 Plus plan ties for the second-cheapest entry, half the category median of $10 a month. Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 120 AI research tools in that category.
Gemini Notebook plans at a glance
| Plan, read October 21, 2026 | Price | Notebooks | Sources per notebook | Usage limits | Model access |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free (Standard) | $0 | 100 | 50 | Standard | Gemini models |
| Google AI Plus | $4.99/mo | 200 | 100 | 2x standard | Gemini models, early access to features |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99/mo | 500 | 300 | 4x standard | Higher access, priority features |
| Google AI Ultra 5x (20 TB) | $99.99/mo | 500 | 500 | 5x Pro | Highest access |
| Google AI Ultra 20x (30 TB) | $199.99/mo | 500 | 600 | 20x Pro | Highest access |
Google prints only monthly prices for these plans on its US page, so a yearly bill on monthly billing is twelve times the sticker: $59.88 for Plus, $239.88 for Pro, $1,199.88 for Ultra 5x and $2,399.88 for Ultra 20x. Each plan also bundles Gemini, storage and other Google services, so the Notebook upgrade is never sold on its own.
What the free plan includes
The free tier is the full product with lower ceilings, not a trial. It includes chat over your sources, Audio Overviews, slides and the other Studio outputs, with standard limits on how much you can generate. Custom chat and analytics are available to everyone, and Google says your data is not used to train the product unless you send feedback.
The ceilings that matter are 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook. That is our arithmetic of 5,000 source slots in total, enough for a semester of course readings or a long research project split across notebooks. Most students and casual researchers will hit the usage limit long before they run out of notebooks.
The free plan also lacks advanced sharing, which is for paid users, and generated images and videos carry a visible watermark. If neither matters, stay free; the NotebookLM review covers what the product does well and where it falls short.
How the usage limits work now
Gemini Notebook meters compute, not a fixed count of chats or Audio Overviews. Google's usage limits page says the limit weighs prompt complexity, the model and feature used, and chat length. When you run out, the quota refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit.
That design changes how to read the tiers. Plus gives two times the standard limit and Pro four times, while Ultra gives 5 or 20 times the Pro limit, which is 20 or 80 times standard by our multiplication. A heavy Audio Overview or video session spends far more of the quota than a quick question, and the Studio panel shows the expected cost before you generate.
When the limit hits, you have two free options before paying. Wait for the 5-hour refresh, or use "Generate later" on the web, which queues the output and notifies you, sometimes after a couple of hours. Paying is only worth it if waiting costs you real work time.
Google AI Plus: the cheap upgrade for students and side projects
Plus doubles every ceiling that matters to a single researcher. Notebooks rise from 100 to 200 and sources per notebook from 50 to 100, so total source slots go from 5,000 to 20,000, our arithmetic. Usage doubles too, and Plus users get early access to new Notebook features.
On usage per dollar, Plus is the best paid deal in the lineup. Two times standard at the Plus price works out to about 0.40x of standard usage per dollar each month, against about 0.20x for Pro, our division of the multiplier by the price. Plus also adds 400 GB of storage across Gmail, Drive and Photos, with a 2 TB option.
The weakness is the model tier. Plus lists access to Gemini models but not the higher access Pro gets, and it keeps the visible watermark on generated images and video. A student who mostly chats with readings and makes Audio Overviews should start here.
Google AI Pro: the default for daily research
Pro is the plan Google positions for daily research and workflows. It raises the caps to 500 notebooks and 300 sources per notebook, which is 150,000 source slots by our arithmetic, and four times the standard usage. A literature review with a few hundred papers fits in one notebook only from Pro up.
Pro also adds higher access to Gemini models, priority access to new features, and the option to remove the visible watermark from generated images and video, except in India, South Korea and Vietnam, where it is applied automatically. The rest of the bundle is large: 5 TB of storage, Gemini with the 1 million token context window, YouTube Premium Lite and $10 a month in Google Cloud credits.
Pay for Pro when a single notebook needs more than 100 sources or Plus still leaves you waiting on the 5-hour refresh during the workday. If you already pay for Gemini, Pro's Notebook limits come at no extra cost; the Gemini pricing page covers the plan from the chatbot side, and the Gemini review covers the assistant itself.
Google AI Ultra: capacity, not features
Ultra adds room and the highest model access rather than new Notebook features on Google's comparison. The 20 TB tier at $99.99 a month allows 500 sources per notebook and five times the Pro usage. The 30 TB tier at $199.99 a month allows 600 sources per notebook and twenty times the Pro usage.
The per-dollar math splits the two tiers. Ultra 5x gives about 0.20x of standard usage per dollar, the same rate as Pro, while Ultra 20x gives about 0.40x, the same rate as Plus, both our division. A heavy user who already lives at Pro's limit gets twice the usage per dollar by skipping the lower Ultra tier.
Skip Ultra unless you can name the limit costing you time. Most of its price buys things outside Notebook, such as Flow video credits, Project Genie and a YouTube Premium individual plan.
Work, school and enterprise accounts
Only personal Google accounts can buy Plus, Pro or Ultra. A company or school account gets Gemini Notebook through a qualifying Google Workspace or Workspace for Education edition, and the Notebook help center lists which editions expand access. Workspace users' uploads and chats are not reviewed by humans or used to train models, even when they give feedback.
Larger organizations can buy Gemini Notebook for enterprise through Google Cloud, which Google says gives five times or more notebook artifacts, plus VPC-SC and IAM controls. It is enabled by a Cloud administrator as part of a Gemini Notebook for Enterprise or Gemini Enterprise plan, so pricing runs through Google Cloud rather than the consumer plans.
Which plan should you pick?
Stay on free if you work in a few notebooks with under 50 sources each and can wait for a 5-hour refresh. Choose Plus if you hit the usage limit weekly or need up to 100 sources in a notebook. Choose Pro if Notebook is part of your workday, you need up to 300 sources per notebook, or you also want Gemini's higher tiers.
Choose Ultra 20x, not Ultra 5x, if Pro's limits are the bottleneck and the budget is there. How this was checked
We read the Google AI plans page, the Gemini Notebook plans help page, the usage limits help page and the plans page at notebook.google on October 21, 2026, and took prices only from Google's US plans page. Notebook and source caps come from the help center table, which Google marks as subject to change. Yearly totals are twelve times the monthly price, source slots are notebooks times sources per notebook, and usage per dollar is the plan's multiple of standard usage divided by its monthly price. The Toolradar figures were read on its AI research statistics page, dated October 20, 2026. Louis Corneloup, who founded Toolradar and Dupple, edited this page. Our method is at how we rate, and sourcing rules are in the editorial policy.
FAQ
Is NotebookLM free in 2026?
Yes. NotebookLM, renamed Gemini Notebook, is free for any personal Google account with 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook and standard usage limits, read on Google's help center on October 21, 2026. The limits refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly cap. Paid Google AI plans raise those limits.
How much does NotebookLM Plus cost?
There is no standalone Notebook subscription. Higher Notebook limits come with Google AI plans: Plus at $4.99 a month, Pro at $19.99 a month, and Ultra at $99.99 or $199.99 a month, from Google's US plans page. Each plan also includes Gemini, storage and other Google services.
What does Google AI Pro add to Gemini Notebook?
Pro raises the caps to 500 notebooks and 300 sources per notebook, gives four times the standard usage, and adds higher access to Gemini models and priority access to new features. It also lets you remove the visible watermark on generated images and video in most countries.
Is Google AI Ultra worth it for NotebookLM?
Only for heavy users who already hit Pro's limits. Ultra adds capacity rather than Notebook features: 500 or 600 sources per notebook and 5 or 20 times Pro's usage. By our arithmetic, the 20x tier gives twice the usage per dollar of the 5x tier.
Did NotebookLM change its name?
Yes. Google now calls it Gemini Notebook, and it lives at notebook.google. Google's plans page and help center now use the new name throughout, and the free plan and Google AI plan upgrades are listed under it.
Can I use NotebookLM with a work or school account?
Yes, through a qualifying Google Workspace or Workspace for Education edition, since the Google AI plans are for personal accounts only. Workspace data is not reviewed by humans or used for training. Enterprises can also get it through Google Cloud, on a Gemini Notebook for Enterprise or Gemini Enterprise plan.
