Ideogram Review 2026
What the credits really cost, what the free plan allows, and where Ideogram's own documentation says the tool falls short.
Ideogram is worth paying for when the words inside the picture have to be right. The free plan gives 30 credits a week, but only to people who sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft, and everything a free account makes is public. The cheapest paid entry is Plus at $15 a month billed yearly for 2,400 credits, verified on Ideogram's own plan table in October 2026. The catches are specific. Each credit costs one US cent to top up, the cost of a single image depends on the model and size, Ideogram offers no refunds, and its own help center admits a word can still come back wrong. The alternatives worth comparing are Midjourney, ChatGPT image generation, Adobe Firefly and Leonardo AI.

IdeogramMost image generators draw a convincing picture and still garble the words in it. Ideogram was built around that gap. Its FAQ says to quote the exact words in a prompt, Studio can fix one word without regenerating the whole picture, and its Image app puts several models behind one credit balance. That focus makes it a serious candidate for posters, logos, menus and social ads.
This review is for people deciding whether to pay for Ideogram. It covers what each plan costs and what the credits buy, what the free plan actually allows, how the tool handles text, the commercial terms, and where Ideogram's own documentation says it falls short.
We name four alternatives at the end, but we do not rank them on image quality, because that call depends on your own prompts.
What is Ideogram?
Ideogram is an AI image generator that works in the browser at ideogram.ai. You write a prompt, pick a model, and get images you can refine, upscale, resize or edit. The Image app runs Ideogram's own models, Ideogram 4.5, 4.0 and 3.0, next to partner models from OpenAI and Google, which Ideogram lists as premium.
Its dedicated apps cover ad resizing, background removal, colorways, material swaps and object removal.
Toolradar data: the AI image generation category on Toolradar holds 166 tools as of October 2026, so the useful question is which job you need done, not which brand has the longest list.
The product is built around text, and that is the reason to look at it. Ideogram's FAQ tells you to quote the exact words in your prompt, and its editor can turn words it has already generated into layers you can retype. A tool that only makes pleasant photographs has no reason to offer either.
How Ideogram works
The basic loop is prompt, generate, refine. Ideogram's own FAQ says to put the exact words in quotation marks and generate again. If one word still comes back wrong, you do not start over. You open Studio and use AI edit on that area, use Select area on a paid plan, or use Layerize text to turn the words into layers you can retype.
Model choice matters as much as the prompt. Ideogram's own models and the partner models both run in the Image app, so you can compare them on the same prompt. Resolution depends on the model. Ideogram 4.5 and 4.0 generate at 1K or 2K, and Ideogram upscales anything above 2K after it generates.
Ideogram 3.0 has no resolution menu at all. Check the file size you need before you pick a model, because an upscale is a paid step.
That workflow also shows where the money goes. Every run spends credits, and the price depends on the model, the quality setting, the size and how many images you ask for. The Generate button shows the cost before you commit. Ideogram publishes no flat per-image credit price, so this review gives none.
Run a handful of your own prompts on the free plan and watch the balance. That gives you a real number for your own volume, which is more useful than any average.
Reference images, edits and upscales always cost credits. Plus, Pro and Team can keep generating after the credits run out, but only in a slower queue, and partner models still need credits. Eligible free accounts also get slow credits each week.
When the weekly 30 run out, you can buy credits or wait for next week's allowance. For plain background removal, the Background Remover app costs 1 credit per run, and you can compare that with the tools in our background remover guide.
Ideogram key features
Ideogram pricing
Ideogram's plan table, last verified October 1, 2026 and read again on October 10, 2026, together with the pricing page, lists four self-serve paths.
Free costs nothing and gives 30 credits a week to Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-ins; email sign-ups get no free credits. Plus is $20 a month, or $180 a year billed yearly, for 2,400 credits a month. Pro is $60 a month, or $42 a month billed yearly ($504 a year), for 7,500 credits.
Team is $30 per user a month, or $20 per user billed yearly ($240 per user a year), with 3,600 credits per member and a minimum of two seats. Enterprise is custom.
Credits are where the arithmetic matters. A top-up credit costs one US cent, so 2,400 credits are worth $24 at that rate. Plus billed yearly therefore costs well under the top-up price for the same credits. Monthly plan credits do not roll over, while top-up credits last 365 days.
The free plan's 30 credits a week come to about 130 credits a month, or roughly $1.30 at the top-up rate.
Two cases show the spread. Two Team seats on yearly billing cost $480 a year, against $720 a year on monthly billing at $30 a seat. Ideogram no longer sells its Basic plan ($8 a month, or $7 billed yearly), but existing subscribers keep it with 960 credits a month.
Ideogram also offers no refunds, and a cancellation must be made at least five days before renewal. If you are weighing a Midjourney subscription against this, our Midjourney pricing guide sets out that side of the comparison.
| Plan | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 30 credits a week for Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-ins; output is public |
| Plus | $20/mo or $15/mo billed yearly ($180 a year) | 2,400 credits a month, private generation, unlimited slow generations |
| Pro | $60/mo or $42/mo billed yearly ($504 a year) | 7,500 credits a month and the largest generation queue |
| Team | $30/user/mo or $20/user/mo billed yearly ($240 per user a year) | 3,600 credits per member, minimum two users |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom plan terms, API volume discounts billed separately |
| Basic (no longer sold) | $8/mo or $7/mo billed yearly | Existing subscribers only, 960 credits a month |

Who Ideogram is for
Ideogram fits people whose pictures carry words: ad headlines, posters, menus, product labels and logos. It also suits a small team that wants shared administration, since Team is priced per seat.
If you are building a shortlist, our best AI image generators list places it beside its rivals, and our logo generator guide covers the logo use case in more depth.
Match the plan to the job. Free suits a few tests a week from a Google, Apple or Microsoft account. Plus suits one person who makes images most weeks, because its monthly credits and private generation cover that without a second subscription.
Pro suits people who generate in volume and want the largest queue. Team suits two or more people who need shared administration, with 3,600 credits for each seat. Each choice is a question of volume and privacy rather than image quality.
It is a weaker fit in three cases. First, if you need private images without paying. Second, if you need PNG files without paying, since free downloads are JPEG except transparent images at 1K. Third, if you want a fixed price per picture in advance, since costs vary by model and size.
If your work is mostly photographs rather than text, read our Midjourney review and Midjourney alternatives before you commit. If you are weighing the ChatGPT route, our ChatGPT image generator guide covers its image limits.
Toolradar also keeps its own tool pages for Midjourney and Adobe Firefly.
Best Ideogram alternatives
If Ideogram is not the right fit, these are the closest options.
| Tool | Best for | Starts at | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ideogram | Designers, marketers and small teams making images where the words on the picture must read correctly. | Plus $15/mo billed yearly (2,400 credits) | Visit → |
| Midjourney | Buyers who care more about the look of one image or a set than legible words inside it. | Plan prices not quoted on this page | Visit → |
| ChatGPT image generation | People who want image generation inside the same assistant they already use for writing and research. | Plan prices not quoted on this page | Visit → |
| Adobe Firefly | Teams that already work in Adobe apps and want generation next to their design files. | Plan prices not quoted on this page | Visit → |
| Leonardo AI | Makers who want to tune models and assets rather than rerun one prompt over and over. | Plan prices not quoted on this page | Visit → |
The bottom line
Ideogram is the pick when the words in the picture are the job, and the free plan is a trial, not a workflow. Plus is the entry point for regular use, and Pro covers heavier volume when billed yearly at $42 a month.
If you only need occasional output and no budget at all, compare the free image generator roundup before you pay anything.
Skip it if your images must stay private without a paid plan, or if you need a fixed price per picture. Ideogram's terms let you use output commercially, disclaim liability for that use and tell you to check third-party rights, so read them before client work.
The same terms forbid removing watermarks that the service includes on output, and the help center does not say which plans carry one.
Methodology: this review quotes only figures read on Ideogram's own plan table, plan comparison, FAQ, download, model and terms pages on October 10, 2026, plus the Toolradar category count. We ran no image tests of our own, and alternative prices stay out until each vendor's own page confirms them.
