TL;DR

Pro costs $155.40 a year on yearly billing, or $14.95 a month billed monthly, and it is the plan most solo editors need. The prices were checked on the company's pricing page in October 2026. Pro includes 2,000 credits a month, and one credit covers 100 words of AI detection. The free plan gives three scans a day, up to 2,000 words each, with no account. The catches are the ones detection tools share: the company says false positives happen, and free text may be used for training. Winston AI and Sapling are the two alternatives priced on the same basis.

  • A Chrome extension runs scans inside Google Docs and shows a replay of the writing process.

Cons

  • Subscription credits expire at month end, so unused volume does not carry over.

Originality.ai sells one job that content teams need done fast: a score that says how much of a draft reads as machine-written, plus a check for copied passages. The price looks simple until you read the fine print.

The headline figure assumes a yearly commitment, and the credits behind it measure words in a way that is easy to misread.

This review is for editors, freelance managers and publishers who check drafts before they go live. We cover what each plan includes, how credits turn into words, what the free plan allows, and what the company says about accuracy.

Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 253 reviews of Originality.ai on G2 and Capterra, which average 4.5 (Originality.ai on Toolradar, read October 2026).

Methodology: every price in this review comes from the vendor's own pricing page, read in October 2026, and the cost figures are our arithmetic on those prices. We did not run accuracy tests, so the accuracy figures here are the vendor's claims.

What is Originality.ai?

Originality.ai is an AI text detector with a plagiarism checker on the same credit balance. The product line goes further than detection.

The company lists an AI checker, a plagiarism checker, a fact and AI hallucination checker, a readability checker, a grammar checker, a content quality score and a guideline checker, all under one account.

Most buyers arrive for detection, and that is also where the pricing questions sit.

The company says its detection covers text in 30 languages, and it highlights the sentences it reads as machine-written. Each scan produces a report you can download as a PDF.

The Chrome extension runs scans inside Google Docs and shows a replay of the writing process. The company also lists Firefox and Google Classroom integrations, a Moodle plugin and an MCP connection. If you want to compare plan prices with a chatbot subscription first, our ChatGPT pricing guide sets the baseline.

How Originality.ai works

The unit that matters is the credit. One credit covers 100 words of AI detection. A combined AI and plagiarism scan costs 2 credits per 100 words, according to the company's own FAQ.

A 1,500-word article therefore uses 15 credits for an AI-only scan and 30 credits with plagiarism on.

Subscription credits renew each month and expire at month end if you do not use them. Pay-as-you-go credits are a one-time purchase and expire two years after you buy them.

The free plan works differently: its 60 credits cover the daily cap.

A full 2,000-word scan costs 20 of those credits, so the free allowance covers 6,000 words of checking each day.

For drafting and grammar, our AI writing tools ranking and free grammar checkers cover tools that write and correct text. This review stays on detection and what it costs.

Originality.ai key features

Credits that measure wordsEssential
One credit covers 100 words of AI detection, and a plagiarism check doubles the cost to 2 credits per 100 words. Pro's monthly allowance therefore covers about 133 articles of 1,500 words on AI alone, or about 66 with plagiarism on. Plan around the plagiarism setting, because it costs twice as much.
A free plan with a daily cap
The Basic plan needs no account and covers AI detection only, under a daily scan cap. That is enough to test the tool on real drafts before you pay anything. The cap is per day, which suits someone who checks one article at a time rather than a team working through a backlog.
Chrome extension and writing replay
The extension runs scans inside Google Docs and shows a replay of the writing process, which helps when you need to see how a draft was produced. It is listed with the Pro plan, so the free plan does not include it.
Sentence highlights and PDF reports
Each scan marks the sentences that read as machine-written and produces a report you can download as a PDF. The highlights show where to look. The overall score should be read with care, and the company says so itself.
Multilingual detection
The company says its detection works in 30 languages and quotes 97.8% overall accuracy for its multilingual model. Both figures are the company's own. We did not run a test, so treat them as claims until you check your own drafts.
API and integrations
API access is listed with the Enterprise plan, which also includes 15,000 credits a month and 365 days of scan history. Other integrations are a Firefox extension, Google Classroom, a Moodle plugin and an MCP connection for AI tools.

Originality.ai pricing

Every Originality.ai price here is in USD, read on the company's pricing page in October 2026. Pro costs $155.40 a year on yearly billing, which works out to $12.95 a month, or $14.95 a month billed monthly.

Yearly billing saves $24. Pro includes a monthly credit allowance, and unused credits expire at month end.

Enterprise costs $1,638.96 a year on yearly billing, or $136.58 a month, and $179 a month billed monthly.

It adds 15,000 credits a month, 365 days of scan history, a dedicated customer success manager and API access. The free Basic plan costs nothing and sits outside these tiers.

Two alternatives can be priced on the same basis.

Winston AI's Essential plan lists at $10 a month billed yearly ($120 a year), or $18 month to month, for 100,000 credits a month, on Winston AI's pricing page. That page also shows a 50% checkout code, and we count the list price because a code can end.

Sapling's Pro plan is $12 a month on annual billing or $25 month to month, with AI checks of up to 100,000 characters each, on Sapling's pricing page.

Their Toolradar profiles are Winston AI and Sapling.

Winston's page does not say how many words a credit covers, so this review does not turn its allowance into a cost per word.

For the other checkers' free limits, our free AI detectors ranking sets them side by side.

Originality.ai pros and cons

What we like

  • Pro gives 2,000 credits a month, enough for about 66 articles of 1,500 words with plagiarism on.
  • The free plan needs no account and lets a buyer test on real drafts first.
  • A Chrome extension runs scans inside Google Docs and shows a replay of the writing process.

What could be better

  • Subscription credits expire at month end, so unused volume does not carry over.
  • The company itself says false positives happen, and that an AI score should not be used alone for discipline.
  • Plagiarism doubles the credit cost, so a team on a tight allowance may be tempted to skip it.

Who Originality.ai is for

Originality.ai fits editors and small content teams that check freelance drafts every week. Take one editor who scans 50 articles of 1,500 words a month, which is 75,000 words. AI detection alone uses 750 credits, and adding plagiarism uses 1,500.

Both fit inside Pro's monthly allowance, so the Pro plan covers the job at yearly billing.

It is a weaker fit in three cases. If you need a free checker for high volume, the daily cap is the first limit you hit.

If you need an API on a small budget, the API sits on Enterprise. And if your drafts are confidential, note that free text may be used for training, so keep them out of the free tool. Our private AI chatbots ranking covers the wider privacy question.

The bottom line

Originality.ai is a sensible pick for one editor or a small team that checks freelance copy every week. Pro covers about 66 articles with plagiarism on, and the free plan is enough to test on real drafts first.

Its accuracy figures are the company's own claims, so keep a human read in the loop.

Winston AI lists a lower entry price on annual billing and a far larger credit pool, but its page does not say what a credit is worth in words.

Sapling is the better choice if you also want writing help in the same tool. Buy Originality.ai if the plagiarism check matters as much as the AI score, and budget two credits per 100 words for it.

Skip it for a high-volume free checker or a cheap API, because the free plan caps scans and the API sits on Enterprise.

For the rest of the field, our AI detectors ranking and free AI detectors ranking compare GPTZero, Copyleaks, ZeroGPT and others.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Originality.ai cost?

Basic is free. Pro costs $155.40 a year on yearly billing, and month-to-month billing costs more. Enterprise costs $1,638.96 a year on yearly billing, or $179 a month billed monthly, and includes 15,000 credits a month. All prices are in USD and were read on the company's pricing page in October 2026.

Is there a free version of Originality.ai?

Yes. The Basic plan is free and needs no account. It allows three scans a day, each up to 2,000 words, and covers AI detection only, with no plagiarism check.

How many words does one Originality.ai credit cover?

One credit covers 100 words of AI detection. An AI and plagiarism scan costs 2 credits per 100 words. So Pro's 2,000 credits cover about 200,000 words of AI-only checks, or about 100,000 words with plagiarism on.

Is Originality.ai accurate?

The company says it is the most accurate AI detector in third-party studies, and it quotes 97.8% overall accuracy for its multilingual model. Those are its own claims, and we did not test accuracy. The same company warns that false positives happen, that shorter text may affect accuracy, and that checks have a 100-word minimum. It also says an AI score should not be used alone for academic discipline.

Is Originality.ai cheaper than Winston AI?

On list price, the entry level is lower at Winston AI. Its Essential plan lists at $10 a month billed yearly ($120 a year), against Originality.ai Pro's yearly price. The units differ, though. Winston's pricing page does not say how many words a credit covers, so we cannot give a cost per word for it.

Does Originality.ai have an API?

Yes, but the company lists API access on the Enterprise plan, alongside 15,000 credits a month and 365 days of scan history. The pricing page does not list the API with Pro, so budget for Enterprise if your workflow needs one.
