Otter.ai Review 2026
What the free minutes really cover, where Pro and Business draw their limits, and how Otter's price compares with Fireflies, Fathom, Granola and Read AI.
Otter.ai is worth paying for if you need a full transcript of every meeting at a low annual price. Basic is free with 300 transcription minutes a month, Pro is $16.99 a month or $8.33 a month billed yearly for 1,200 minutes, and Business is $30 a month or $19.99 billed yearly with unlimited meeting minutes, as listed on Otter's own pricing page in October 2026.
The catches are in the caps, not the sticker. Basic stops each conversation at 30 minutes and keeps only your 25 most recent, Pro stops at 90 minutes per conversation, and none of the monthly minutes roll over. Pro also caps a workspace at 5 billed users. The alternatives worth comparing are Fireflies, Fathom, Granola and Read AI.

Otter.aiOtter's pitch is the transcript: a bot joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet, writes down who said what, and produces a summary with action items.
The rivals on this page compete by offering roomier free plans or by skipping the bot entirely, so the buyer's question in 2026 is less whether Otter works than whether its limits fit your meetings at its price.
This review answers it on cost. It covers what each Otter plan costs, how many minutes and meetings that buys, the limits Otter publishes in its own plan table, and how the price compares with Fireflies, Fathom, Granola and Read AI on their own pricing pages.
We do not grade transcript accuracy, because that depends on your microphones, accents and vocabulary, and the free plan is the honest way to check it.
What is Otter.ai?
Otter.ai is an AI meeting assistant and transcription service. It records and transcribes meetings live on Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, records in person through its iOS and Android apps, and transcribes audio or video files you import.
Every plan includes speaker identification, AI chat across your meetings and automated summaries with action items.
Toolradar data: Otter.ai is listed as an alternative to 85 other tools on Toolradar, the second most-listed among 170 transcription tools, and its entry paid price ranks 20th of 65 priced transcription tools, where the median is $12.50 a month, as of October 2026.
In plain terms, buyers compare almost everything against Otter, and its yearly Pro price sits below the category's typical entry price.
That position is why a review on cost matters. Otter is rarely the only tool on a shortlist, so the decision usually comes down to which limits you can live with at which price.
How Otter.ai works
You connect your calendar and Otter's notetaker joins scheduled calls, or you press record in the app for an in-person meeting. The transcript appears live, with speakers named, and a summary with action items lands after the call.
Otter's AI chat then answers questions within one meeting or across many, with a monthly query allowance: 20 per user on Basic (3 per conversation), 50 on Pro and 200 on Business.
Minutes are the meter, and Otter counts two pools. Meeting and recording minutes are 300 a month on Basic and 1,200 on Pro, and unlimited on Business and Enterprise. Imported files are counted separately: 300 minutes on Basic, 1,200 on Pro and 6,000 on Business, with Basic limited to 3 imported files for the life of the account and Pro to 10 a month. Otter's table says none of these monthly limits roll over.
The per-conversation cap matters more than the monthly total for most people. A single conversation can run 30 minutes on Basic, 90 on Pro and 4 hours on Business. An hour-long weekly team meeting therefore needs Pro, and a half-day workshop or long interview needs Business. Concurrent meetings follow the same ladder: 1 on Basic, 2 on Pro and 3 on Business.
Exports also change with the plan. Basic exports mp3 and txt, while Pro adds pdf, docx and srt files, which is what you need for captions or a shareable document. Playback speed is fixed at normal on Basic and adjustable from half speed to 3x on paid plans.

Otter.ai pricing
Otter's pricing page, checked on October 17, 2026, prices everything in US dollars, and the yearly discounts are large: Otter labels annual Pro a 51% saving and annual Business a 33% saving over monthly billing. Basic is free forever, and Enterprise is sold through a demo with no published price.
Annual Pro is the cheapest paid seat in this comparison. Over a year it comes to about $100, against $203.88 for twelve monthly payments. At 1,200 minutes a month, annual Pro works out to well under a cent per transcribed minute if you use the allowance.
Business is priced for teams, and the yearly discount is worth more there. Five Business seats cost about $1,199 a year on annual billing, against $1,800 on monthly billing. New monthly Business subscribers may see 20% off for the first three months, an offer Otter limits to first-time subscribers.
Students and teachers with an .edu address get 20% off Pro: $79.99 a year, or $13.59 a month. Otter takes cards on its website and in-app purchases through Apple and Google, and does not accept PayPal.
The rivals price differently.
Fireflies Pro is $18 a month or $10 billed annually, Fathom Premium is $20 a month or $16 billed annually with a free plan that records without a minute cap, Granola Business is $14 per user a month, and Read AI Pro is $15 per user a month billed annually.

Who Otter.ai is for
Otter is a strong fit for individuals and small teams who want a searchable transcript of every call at the lowest annual price. Consultants, researchers, journalists and students who record interviews benefit most, because Otter handles both live meetings and imported files.
For a wider shortlist, our best AI meeting assistants ranking places it beside its rivals, and the AI transcription tools guide covers file-first options.
Match the plan to your longest meeting, not your monthly total. Basic suits short check-ins under 30 minutes. Pro suits one person or a team of up to five whose meetings stay under 90 minutes. Business suits teams of up to 25 billed users with long meetings, workshops or heavy file uploads.
It is a weaker fit in three cases. First, if you want a free plan for hour-long meetings, since Basic cuts off at 30 minutes and Fathom's free plan does not cap recordings. Second, if a bot on the call is the problem, in which case read our Granola review.
Third, if you need SSO, which Otter reserves for Enterprise with a minimum 100-user license. Free-first buyers should also check our free AI transcription tools list.

The bottom line
Otter is the cheapest way to get full transcripts of meetings under 90 minutes, as long as you pay annually. Test accuracy on Basic with a short call, then move to annual Pro if your meetings fit the cap, or to Business if they run longer or you upload a lot of recordings. Budget by your longest meeting first and your monthly minutes second.
Skip it if you want long meetings on a free plan or no bot on the call. Fathom's free plan has no minute allowance, and Granola captures notes from your own device.
Our AI note-taking apps guide covers both, the product records for Fathom and Granola are on Toolradar, and AIpresso's AI tool pricing statistics track how these prices move.
Methodology: this review quotes only figures read on the pricing pages of Otter, Fireflies, Fathom, Granola and Read AI on October 17, 2026, plus Toolradar's own transcription category data. We ran no recordings of our own and do not score transcript accuracy.
