Best AI Transcription Tools in 2026: Paid Plans Compared by Cost per Hour
Eight transcription tools compared on what one hour of audio costs at full use, plus four higher tiers, with prices checked in October 2026.
Among each vendor's cheapest paid plan, Notta Pro gives the lowest cost per hour of audio: $8.17 a month billed annually for 30 hours, about $0.27 an hour if you use the whole allowance. Rev Essentials is next at $0.31 an hour, then Otter Pro at $0.42. The lowest sticker price is ElevenLabs Starter at $5 a month, but its credits buy about 90 minutes of transcription, which works out to $3.30 an hour.
The cheapest hour is not always on the cheapest plan. Transkriptor Pro, one tier above its $9.99 Lite plan, comes to $0.21 an hour on annual billing, the lowest figure on this page. Choose a plan by the hours you will really transcribe each month, then check the cap per recording.

- 8 tools compared: Notta, Rev, Otter.ai, Descript, ElevenLabs, Transkriptor, Sonix, Maestra

AI transcription plans are sold by the minute, the hour or the seat, so the monthly price alone says little. A plan with a low sticker price can cover 90 minutes, and a seat at about $25 can cover more than 80 hours.
The fair comparison divides each price by the hours it includes, which is how this page ranks the plans.
Toolradar data: of the 166 transcription tools we track, 63 publish a cheapest paid price, and their median is $12 a month, as of October 2026.
Each price below was read on the vendor's own pricing page on October 12, 2026, in US dollars. "Cheapest paid plan" means the lowest tier that includes transcription, not the most popular tier.

Pros
- Lowest cost per hour of the cheapest plans on this list
- A 120-minute free plan lets you test the transcript quality before paying
- Pro adds transcript export, translation and custom vocabulary
Cons
- Pro has a monthly cap, and only Business at $16.67 a month billed annually is unlimited
- Each recording stops at 5 hours on Pro, so a full-day event has to be split into files
Rev
The second-lowest hour at about $0.31 on annual billing, and the plan is priced per seat.
- Pricing
- Essentials $25.49 a seat a month billed annually; 5,000 AI minutes per user a month (83 hours); up to 3 seats
Best for: Small legal, investigative or research teams that need transcripts for their case work.

- On annual billing, the Pro tier brings the hour down to about $0.29 and allows up to 5 seats
- A free plan gives one user 45 AI minutes a month to test the product
Cons
- The pricing page is written for legal and investigative buyers, so a podcaster may pay for features aimed at that work
- Monthly billing is $29.99 a seat, which lifts the hour to about $0.36
Otter.ai
About $0.42 an hour on Pro. You pay for live capture and summaries here, not for the cheapest transcript per hour.
- Pricing
- Pro $8.33 a user a month billed annually; 1,200 transcription minutes a user a month (20 hours); free plan 300 minutes

- Business, at $19.99 a user a month billed annually, is the step up for teams
Cons
- Pro caps imported files at 10 a month and each conversation at 90 minutes
- Otter is built for meetings first, so a buyer who only uploads files pays for features they do not use
Descript
About $1.60 an hour at full use. The allowance counts every media hour processed, not only transcription.
- Pricing
- Hobbyist $16 a person a month billed annually ($24 monthly); 10 media hours a month; watermark-free export
Best for: Podcasters and video editors who cut a recording by editing its transcript.
Pros
- Watermark-free 1080p export and 400 AI credits a month on Hobbyist
- Editing the transcript edits the audio, which suits interview and podcast cuts
- Studio Sound, filler-word removal and clip tools sit in the same editor
Cons
- Hobbyist covers one person; a team of five needs Business at $50 a person a month billed annually
- Every media hour counts toward the 10-hour allowance, so editing time uses up transcription time
ElevenLabs
The lowest sticker price here, but 30,000 credits buy about 90 minutes of Scribe, or $3.30 an hour on annual billing.
- Pricing
- Starter $5 a month billed annually ($6 monthly); 30,000 credits a month; Scribe uses 330 credits a minute
Best for: Buyers who also need voice generation and want a low entry price for transcripts.
Pros
- Lowest monthly price in this list on annual billing
- One credit pool covers transcription, text to speech, voice changing and sound effects
Cons
- Credits are shared, so a month of voice work leaves fewer transcription minutes
- The 330 credits a minute is the vendor's approximate figure, not a fixed rate
Transkriptor
$2.00 an hour on Lite. Pro covers 40 hours on annual billing, which is $0.21 an hour, the lowest here.
- Pricing
- Lite $9.99 a month; 300 transcription minutes a month (5 hours); Pro $8.33 a month billed annually
Best for: Light users who transcribe a few hours a month and prefer to pay month to month.
Pros
- Pro gives 2,400 minutes a month, the lowest cost per hour on this page
- AI summary, custom meeting templates and AI chat come with the Pro tier
Cons
- Lite costs $2.00 an hour, several times the Pro rate
- Unused minutes expire after one month and do not roll over
Sonix
$4.58 an hour on annual Core and $5.00 monthly. Pro at $880 a year covers 480 hours, which is $1.83 an hour.
- Pricing
- Core $25 a month or $275 a year; 5 hours a month (60 hours a year); extra hours $10 each
Best for: Solo researchers and journalists who want a browser editor and transcripts they can edit as text.
Pros
- Pay as you go at $10 an hour needs no subscription at all
- The browser editor changes audio by editing text, with speaker labels and timestamps
Cons
- Core covers 5 hours a month, so a busy month pays $10 for each extra hour
- Monthly billing raises Core to $5.00 an hour, so the $4.58 figure needs the annual plan
Maestra
The most expensive hour on this list at $7.67 on Lite, falling to $6.50 on Basic and $5.27 on Premium.
- Pricing
- Lite $23 a month billed yearly; 180 transcription minutes a month (3 hours); pay as you go $12 per 60 minutes
Best for: Teams that need transcripts in more than 125 languages and accept a small monthly allowance.
Pros
- Transcription in 125-plus languages on Lite
- Premium's 900 minutes a month includes API access
Cons
- Lite gives three hours a month, and pay as you go costs $12 an hour
- Every tier shown costs more per hour than the cheapest plans of Notta, Rev or Otter
What it is
Cost per hour is the plan's price divided by the transcription hours it includes. A plan with a large allowance is cheap per hour only if you transcribe all of it.
Use a quarter of that allowance and the same plan costs four times as much per hour, so the real input is how many hours of audio you record in a month.
The list covers apps you sign up for. Fireflies is left out because its paid plans sell unlimited transcription, so there is no hour to divide by.
Developer APIs are left out because they are built for engineers, not for buyers who want a monthly plan.
Toolradar, our software directory, lists most of these tools too, including Notta, Rev and Otter.ai.
For a meeting notetaker beyond these, the Granola review covers another option. For video cuts, the video editor guide compares the editors, and the dubbing guide covers the tools for translated audio.
Why it matters
The cheapest monthly price and the cheapest hour are often different plans. Transkriptor Lite costs $9.99 for five hours, or $2.00 an hour, while the Pro tier one step up covers 40 hours on annual billing.
A podcaster or researcher who records 20 hours a month pays by the hour, not by the headline price, so the per-hour figure decides the bill.
Check two things beyond price: the cap on each recording, and what the allowance counts.
Notta and Otter both cap a single file on their paid plans, and Descript counts editing time against its allowance. A low hourly rate does not help if your longest interview fails the cap.
Key features to look for
Pricing
Methodology. Each row uses the cheapest paid plan that includes transcription, on annual billing where the vendor offers it, except the four rows marked higher tier. Cost per hour is the plan price divided by the transcription hours it includes, assuming the whole allowance is used.
Seat plans are counted per user. ElevenLabs is counted at its approximate 330 credits per minute for Speech to Text, with every credit assumed to go to transcription.
Vendor pricing pages were checked in October 2026 in US dollars.
Descript hours are media hours. Fireflies is excluded because its paid plans sell unlimited transcription.

If you will fill the plan, Notta Pro is the pick among the cheapest plans, though Transkriptor Pro is cheaper per hour if you need its full allowance. For a team that lives in meetings, Otter Pro costs more per hour but captures live calls and summaries.
If you only need a few hours a month, Transkriptor Lite keeps the bill small, although each hour costs more.
Before you buy, read the cap per recording, what the allowance counts and whether the billing term matches your use.
For call tools, the meeting assistant guide compares the tools built for calls, and the free transcription guide covers the free allowances.
