ElevenLabs vs Speechify 2026: Voice Generation or Text to Speech Reader?

ElevenLabs vs Speechify in 2026: a reader for listening against a generator for making audio. Plan prices, API rates per character, free plans and verdict.

ElevenLabs vs Speechify 2026: Voice Generation or Text to Speech Reader?

Pick Speechify if you want to listen to documents, web pages and books; pick ElevenLabs if you want to produce audio other people will hear. Speechify Premium costs $139 a year or $29 a month and turns anything you read into speech at up to 5x speed. ElevenLabs Creator costs $22 a month and generates voiceovers, cloned voices and dubbing with a commercial license. They overlap less than their "text to speech" labels suggest.

Prices were checked on Speechify's pricing page, SpeechifyAI's API pricing, ElevenLabs' pricing page and ElevenLabs' API pricing on October 21, 2026. Toolradar data: ElevenLabs is listed as an alternative to 52 other tools on Toolradar, #2 of the 127 AI voice tools it tracks, while Speechify is listed against 16 tools, joint #7, as of October 2026 (ElevenLabs on Toolradar, Speechify on Toolradar). Buyers cross-shop ElevenLabs about three times as often. Toolradar is the software directory we run.

At a glance

What you are comparing Speechify ElevenLabs
Built for Listening to text you read: documents, web pages, PDFs, scanned books Generating audio: voiceovers, narration, cloned voices, dubbing, agents
Free plan Yes: 10 robotic-sounding voices, listening up to 1.5x, text to speech only Yes: 10k credits a month (about 10 minutes of generated speech), 3 Studio projects
Main paid plan Premium: $139 a year or $29 a month Creator: $22 a month, or $18.33 a month on annual billing
Cheapest paid plan Premium is the only consumer tier Starter: $6 a month, 30k credits, commercial license

Commercial use of audio Premium is a listening plan; Speechify sells voiceovers as a separate product From Starter up
Developer API Separate SpeechifyAI plans: a free tier, then monthly plans with characters included Per-character API rates from $0.04 per 1K characters

The key distinction is direction. Speechify takes text you need to get through and reads it to you. ElevenLabs takes text you wrote and turns it into a finished audio asset, so its plans are measured in credits and minutes of output, and Speechify's are not.

What Speechify costs

Speechify has two consumer plans: Free and Premium. Free lets you listen anywhere at up to 1.5x speed with 10 voices that Speechify itself describes as robotic, and it covers text to speech only. Premium costs $29 a month on monthly billing or $139 a year on yearly billing, which Speechify labels as a 60% saving.

Premium adds 1,000+ natural voices in 60+ languages, listening at up to 5x speed and Scan & Listen for photographed pages. It also brings AI summaries and chat, Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive integrations, voice typing for dictation and AI podcasts. There is no usage meter in the plan description: you pay for access, not for minutes of audio.

What that means in practice: a student, lawyer or analyst who listens to a few hours of reading a week pays the same price as someone who listens to one article. Our Speechify pricing guide covers the plan in more depth, and the Speechify review covers how the reader performs.

What ElevenLabs costs

ElevenLabs sells credits, and its plans are sized by how much audio you generate. Text to speech uses 1 credit per character on its V2 Multilingual models, and all of ElevenLabs' products draw from one shared monthly pool. The pricing page lists each plan with an approximate number of generated minutes:

ElevenLabs plan Monthly billing Annual billing, per month Credits a month About this many minutes
Free $0 $0 10k 10
Starter $6 $5 30k 30
Creator $22 $18.33 121k 121
Pro $99 $82.50 600k 600
Scale (3 seats) $299 $249.17 1.8M 1,800
Business (10 seats) $990 $825 6M 6,000

Annual billing equals 10 months of the monthly price, so two months are free. Creator is also on a first-month offer of 50% off, which shows as $11 for that month only. Unused credits roll over for up to two months while you keep a paid plan, so a quiet month is not wasted, but downgrading or cancelling forfeits them.

Starter adds the commercial license, instant voice cloning, 20 Studio projects and Dubbing Studio. Creator adds professional voice cloning, the higher-fidelity copy of a specific voice. Pro adds 44.1kHz PCM output through the API and 192kbps audio. The ElevenLabs pricing guide walks through each tier, and cheaper ElevenLabs alternatives covers options if the credit model feels expensive.

What each costs for the same job

The two products price different jobs, so the fair comparison is by use case. Our arithmetic from the published prices:

Your job Speechify ElevenLabs
Listen to reading for a year Premium, billed yearly Not the product; Free covers about 10 minutes a month
Narrate about 2 hours of audio a month Not the product Creator, $220 a year on annual billing
Narrate about 10 hours a month Not the product Pro, $990 a year on annual billing
Publish narration commercially A separate Speechify voiceover product, not Premium Starter, $60 a year on annual billing, about 30 minutes a month

The table shows why "which is cheaper" has no single answer. For listening, Speechify is the only one of the two built for the job. For creating, ElevenLabs is, and its cost scales with how many minutes you produce.

API pricing: where they compete head to head

Developers are the one buyer who can use either, and on published rates Speechify's API is much cheaper per character. SpeechifyAI, billed separately from the Speechify reader, has four self-serve monthly plans:

SpeechifyAI plan Monthly fee Characters included Rate after that
Free $0 500K Pauses until next month
Starter $10 1.9M $10 per 1M characters
Pro $99 13.5M $8 per 1M characters
Scale $499 78M $6 per 1M characters

ElevenLabs lists its API at $0.08 per 1,000 characters for its v4, v3 and v2 Multilingual models, and $0.04 per 1,000 for Flash, Turbo and the low-latency variants. By our arithmetic, 1 million characters costs $80 on the standard ElevenLabs models or $40 on Flash and Turbo, against $10 per 1M past the included balance on Speechify's Starter plan.

The price gap is real, so the decision rests on what you need from the voice. ElevenLabs offers 74 languages in its plans and the expressive v4 and v3 models. SpeechifyAI says its self-serve tier covers English on its Simba 3.2 model and six languages on Simba 3.0, with broader coverage through sales. Voice cloning is on every paid SpeechifyAI plan. For an English product with high volume, Speechify's API is the cheaper build; for multilingual or emotionally varied narration, ElevenLabs' range is what you are paying for.

Limits and costs to check before you subscribe

  • ElevenLabs credits are shared across products. Text to speech uses 1 credit per character, but speech to text uses 330 credits a minute, music 900 a minute and Dubbing Studio 5,000 a minute with a watermark. Creator's 121k credits buy about 24 minutes of Dubbing Studio, by our arithmetic, so a team that dubs and narrates on one plan runs out faster than the minutes column suggests.
  • ElevenLabs rollover has a condition. Unused credits carry over for two months only while you stay on a paid plan; downgrading or cancelling forfeits them, so time a downgrade for when the balance is low.
  • The ElevenLabs Creator discount is first-month only. The $11 price applies once; budget at the full monthly or annual rate.
  • ElevenLabs prices exclude taxes, levies and duties, which the pricing page states under the plan cards.
  • A Speechify reader subscription does not include API usage. SpeechifyAI is billed separately in its own console, so a developer who already pays for Premium still needs an API plan.
  • SpeechifyAI's monthly balance expires. Included characters do not roll over, while money you top up yourself never expires, and auto top-up is off until you switch it on. On the free API tier, requests pause until the next month once the 500K characters are used.
  • Voice agents are a sales conversation on Speechify. SpeechifyAI has no self-serve plan or published per-minute rate for voice agents, while ElevenLabs lists its agent pricing per minute on its API page.

If your budget is zero, the best free AI voice generators ranking compares the free tiers on the creation side, and the best AI voice cloning tools ranking covers cloning if that is the reason you are looking at ElevenLabs.

Free plans compared

Both free plans are useful for different reasons. Speechify Free is enough to test whether listening to your reading works for you, though the 10 voices and the 1.5x speed cap are deliberately limited. ElevenLabs Free gives 10k credits a month, about 10 minutes of generated audio, plus voice design, sound effects, music and 3 Studio projects. It carries no commercial license, so anything you plan to publish needs Starter or above.

Who should pick which

Pick Speechify if you are a student, professional or anyone with a reading backlog who wants to listen faster, use dictation, and scan physical pages. Pay yearly once you know you will keep it, since the yearly price is well under twelve monthly payments.

Pick ElevenLabs if you publish podcasts, YouTube voiceovers, audiobooks, ads or product audio, need a cloned voice, or dub content into other languages. Start on Starter for commercial rights, move to Creator for professional cloning and about two hours of audio a month, and to Pro once you produce around ten hours.

Pick on API rates if you are a developer: Speechify for low cost per character in English, ElevenLabs for language range and expressive models. The best text to speech software ranking compares more readers, the best AI voice generators ranking compares more creation tools, and the ElevenLabs review and ElevenLabs vs Murf cover the creation side in detail.

How we compared

We read Speechify's consumer pricing page, the SpeechifyAI API pricing page, ElevenLabs' plan pricing page and FAQ, and ElevenLabs' API pricing page on October 21, 2026, in US dollars. Yearly totals, per-million-character costs and the use-case table are our arithmetic from those published prices, before tax. We did not generate or listen to audio on either product for this page.
