DeepSeek Review 2026: Is It Safe, Free and Worth Using?
What the free DeepSeek chat app costs beside the token API, where chats are stored, and how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok compare on price.
Short answer: DeepSeek's chat app is free, and a modest API job is cheap if it can wait for off-peak hours. Ten million input tokens and two million output tokens, with no cache hits, come to $2.70 on deepseek-flash. Peak weekday hours double that bill. The limit that should decide the purchase is not the invoice: DeepSeek stores personal data in China, and its privacy policy allows training use unless you opt out.
Key factsBest for: Buyers who want a free chat app or a low API rate and can…
- A free chat app from a Chinese lab, with a token API that stays cheap off-peak and doubles on weekday peaks.
- Chat app: Free on the web and the official app
- API model: deepseek-flash, version V4.1-Flash-1017
- Data storage: People's Republic of China
- Press rank: 2nd of 35 AI assistants, October 2026
Pros
- The official app and web chat are free, with no monthly seat, so the chat itself never bills you.
- A Flash cache hit is $0.003 per million input tokens off-peak, the cheap path when a prompt repeats.
- Both API models list a 1M-token context, tool calls and JSON output, and Flash accepts images in the same call.
Cons
- Personal data is stored in China, and training continues until you opt out, so keep client files out of the box.
- Weekday peaks double the rate, and deepseek-v4-pro takes no images, so vision jobs have to stay on Flash.
- The Hugging Face files are the V4 weights under MIT, while the live Flash API is a later build.

DeepSeek is the right 2026 pick when you want a capable chat box at no monthly fee, or an API you can schedule. It is a poor place to paste client files, contracts, or anything a regulator would ask you to keep in a named region. The company stores personal data in China, so the region is not a choice you make at signup. The app costs nothing, and the API is inexpensive only outside a pair of weekday windows, so a job you cannot shift pays the higher rate.
Toolradar data: DeepSeek ranks 2nd in media coverage among AI assistants, out of 35 tools mentioned in the last 30 days, as of October 2026 (DeepSeek on Toolradar). Visitors there most often compare it with Claude and Hugging Face, hosted chat against the weights. Our AI chatbots ranking covers seven assistants on fit, while this page stays on what DeepSeek costs.
Methodology: every price in this review was read on the vendor's own page in October 2026, and the token totals are our arithmetic on those rates. We did not run the models. The check date is 17 October 2026. How this site weighs a review is on how we rate.
What is DeepSeek?
DeepSeek is a chat product and an API from Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd., and the two do not share a bill. The download page offers free chat on the web and in the official app, enough for drafts and code questions. The API is a separate prepaid balance, priced per million tokens, so a developer cannot spend the free login.
On 17 October 2026 the API changelog moved the official web and app models to DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017, called deepseek-flash on the API. Older names, deepseek-v4-flash and deepseek-v4-flash-vision-exp, still answer, but those models are retired and served by V4.1 Flash at the Flash price, so a saved integration keeps the lower schedule.
deepseek-v4-pro is still listed, version DeepSeek-V4-Pro-0813, for callers who will pay its higher rate. DeepSeek had planned to route Pro onto Flash in September, then kept Pro on its own rates after users asked.
V4-Flash and V4-Pro weights on Hugging Face use the MIT license, the path if you want a file instead of a meter. The V4-Flash card lists 284 billion parameters, 13 billion of them active, and the V4-Pro card lists 1.6 trillion, with 49 billion active. Those cards are the V4 release, not the model the API serves today, so a download is not a copy of the live chat. How DeepSeek works
The chat app is an account, a box, and a history you can delete in settings once a thread exists. The privacy policy, last updated 10 February 2026, says DeepSeek collects, processes and stores personal data in the People's Republic of China. A prompt that names a customer leaves your own region, which rules the app out for files a regulator expects to stay put.
You opt out of training on personal data by emailing [email protected], since the app offers no switch for that. The policy also says you should not rely on outputs for factual accuracy, because the model predicts likely next words, so check any figure against a source you trust.
You create a key, add balance, and name a model, and the free app does not spend that balance. Thinking mode is the default, with a non-thinking mode when you want a shorter reply. Both models accept JSON output and tool calls, and both speak the OpenAI format at api.deepseek.com and an Anthropic format at api.deepseek.com/anthropic, so an existing SDK can point here.
The Responses API says it is stateless: responses and conversations are not stored on the server, so the client must resend the history. The chat privacy policy does not cover end users of apps built on the open platform. If you ship DeepSeek inside your own product, you are the controller for those people.
Peak hours are 01:00 to 04:00 UTC and 06:00 to 10:00 UTC, Monday through Friday, excluding Chinese public holidays. Everything else, including weekends, is off-peak at half the peak rate, so a Saturday run costs half of the same job inside a weekday window. Cache hits are isolated per user, not a shared pool, so one teammate's repeated prefix does not cheapen another's.
DeepSeek key features
DeepSeek pricing
Chat on the DeepSeek app is free, which suits anyone who never creates an API key. API rates below were read on DeepSeek's pricing page on 17 October 2026. A cache miss on deepseek-flash is $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens off-peak, the rate when that account has not cached the prompt.
deepseek-v4-pro is $0.66 and $1.98 on the same basis, a real step up in cost for text, and peak hours bill double. A Flash cache hit is a much smaller input rate, listed in the table, which is how a repeated prompt gets cheap.
Ten million cache-miss input tokens at the Flash off-peak input rate, plus two million output tokens at the Flash off-peak output rate, come to $2.70. That is well under a typical paid seat if the month stays that small. The same counts in a peak window come to $5.40, and on deepseek-v4-pro, still off-peak and still a cache miss, they come to $10.56. Cache hits, batching and shorter answers move the real invoice, and these totals assume none of those.
Search and Fetch are not token prices, so a shorter prompt does not shrink them. Calls through DeepSeek Harness, Claude Code or Codex stay free of the per-request charge until 00:00 Beijing time on 1 November 2026, a waiver with an end date. After that the table rate applies, and concurrency is 2,500 for Flash and 500 for Pro, so a wide fan-out can queue on Pro.
The paid assistants bill a seat, a predictable cost when token volume is hard to guess. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month, billed monthly, with no annual plan, and API usage is a separate OpenAI account, so the subscription does not cover OpenAI's API. Pro is $100, $200 or $500 a month, and only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast, so the fastest mode sits on the highest tier.
Claude Pro is $17 a month on the annual plan ($200 up front), or the same monthly amount as Plus month to month, on Claude's pricing page. Max starts at $100 a month, and the lower Pro figure is a prepay, so monthly buyers do not get it. Our ChatGPT pricing and Claude pricing guides go tier by tier, with profiles on ChatGPT and Claude.
Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month in the United States, with 2x Gemini limits and cloud storage of 400 GB or 2 TB, so part of the fee is storage. Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month, and the Gemini limits page puts a 1 million token context on Pro and Ultra, against 32k with no AI plan, so a long document is a paid feature. The X Subscription includes Grok, Plus at $8 a month, while xAI recommends Premium at $30 a month for new AI users, which steers a new buyer past the entry plan. See Gemini pricing, Grok pricing, Gemini on Toolradar and Grok on Toolradar.

DeepSeek pros and cons
What we like
- The official app and web chat are free, with no monthly seat, so the chat itself never bills you.
- A Flash cache hit is $0.003 per million input tokens off-peak, the cheap path when a prompt repeats.
- Both API models list a 1M-token context, tool calls and JSON output, and Flash accepts images in the same call.
What could be better
- Personal data is stored in China, and training continues until you opt out, so keep client files out of the box.
- Weekday peaks double the rate, and deepseek-v4-pro takes no images, so vision jobs have to stay on Flash.
- The Hugging Face files are the V4 weights under MIT, while the live Flash API is a later build.
Who DeepSeek is for
DeepSeek fits a person who wants a free chat box for drafts, code questions and reading long files, and a developer whose jobs can sit outside weekday peak hours. That sample stays cheap only while outputs stay short and prompts miss the cache. A heavier month needs its own total, and self-hosting is a third path if the MIT V4 files match the model you need.
Skip confidential prompts, because personal data is stored in China, disputes follow mainland Chinese law, and anyone under 18 needs a guardian. A startup sending customer text through the API should not assume the chat policy covers those customers, because that policy stops at people using DeepSeek's own app. For that decision, read our private AI chatbots ranking and the head-to-head on DeepSeek vs ChatGPT. The bottom line
Use DeepSeek for a free chat and for API work you can schedule. Off-peak Flash is the small sample bill, and Pro is nearly four times that, so the model you call sets the price. Pay for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok when you want a flat seat, a company outside China, or Gemini inside Google's apps.
Do not send regulated text through the chat app: the privacy policy is explicit about China, training, and outputs that can be wrong. Shipping DeepSeek inside your product makes you the controller for those end users. Weights you run yourself are a separate decision, covered in the open-source LLM ranking and our Claude and Gemini reviews.
