Leonardo AI Review 2026: Is It Worth the Price?

What each token pool buys, where relaxed generation stops, and how the bill compares with Midjourney, Ideogram and Flux.

TL;DR

Leonardo AI is worth a paid plan if you generate most weeks, and the free plan is only a daily sample. Essential costs $12 a month for 8,500 fast tokens, checked on Leonardo's pricing page on October 16, 2026. Premium and Ultimate let you keep going on Leonardo's own models after that pool hits zero, in a slower queue. Third-party models still spend tokens on every run, so the unlimited label does not cover the whole catalog.

  • Updated: October 19, 2026
  • Best for: People who generate most weeks and need private files plus a token bank.
  • Price as of October 19, 2026: From $12/mo (Essential, 8,500 fast tokens); free plan with 150 fast tokens a day.
  • A token-metered image and video studio where the slower queue covers only Leonardo's own models.
  • Free allowance: Resets daily, public output, and nothing banks past the day
  • Essential pool: Monthly fast tokens, plus a rollover bank of 25,500
  • Relaxed video: Ultimate only, on selected Leonardo models
  • Tools tracked: 169 AI image generation tools on Toolradar, as of October 16, 2026

Pros

  • Essential adds private generations and a rollover bank capped at three times the monthly allowance, so a lighter month keeps the unused balance.
  • Premium and Ultimate keep selected Leonardo-hosted models available after the fast pool hits zero, which is the fallback once fast tokens are spent.
  • A three-seat Starter plan costs less per month than three separate Premium subscriptions and adds relaxed video.

Cons

  • Leonardo's own FAQ says one token is not a fixed image size, so the plan price is not a picture count.
  • Relaxed mode excludes named third-party models, so those workflows never reach the slower queue.
  • Free creations are public, Leonardo keeps rights in them, and you get a commercial license rather than ownership.

Leonardo sells a token balance, not a stack of finished pictures. A founder who generates most weeks needs a plan that survives thrown-away drafts and still banks a quiet week.

The bill then turns on which models keep charging once the fast tokens are gone.

AIpresso data: Toolradar tracks 169 AI image generation tools as of October 16, 2026. Across the 42 that publish a cheapest paid plan, the median is $10 a month, so Essential's monthly price sits $2 above that median.

The figure is on Toolradar's AI image generation ranking.

What is Leonardo AI?

Leonardo.Ai is a browser studio for images, video, and a public API, with first-party models and third-party models on the same token balance. Its own image models on the current plan table include Lucid Origin, Lucid Realism, Phoenix 1.0, and Phoenix 0.9, and a higher plan can keep those running after the fast pool is empty.

Outside models on the same table stay on the meter, so paying more does not buy a free queue for that work.

In 2024 Leonardo wrote that it had joined Canva and would keep running Leonardo.Ai as its own platform, so a subscription here is still a Leonardo plan, not a Canva line item.

The plans on the pricing page today are Free, Essential, Premium, and Ultimate, plus seat-based team plans.

Toolradar keeps profiles for Leonardo AI, Midjourney, Ideogram, Flux, and Adobe Firefly.

This review prices four of those alternatives against Leonardo and does not rank how the pictures look.

How Leonardo AI works

Tokens come off your balance for images, video, background removal, and upscales, and Leonardo's pricing FAQ says one token is not a fixed image size.

Cost follows the GPU load of the action, so a heavy upscale spends more of the month than a small draft, and the plan card shows a tank size rather than a finished-file count.

Free accounts receive 150 fast tokens a day, and that allowance resets daily, which covers a few public tests and will not carry a client deadline because nothing rolls forward.

Paid plans receive a monthly allowance that resets at the start of the billing month, with leftovers moving into a rollover bank capped at three times that allowance: 25,500 on Essential, 75,000 on Premium, and 180,000 on Ultimate.

Top-up tokens, sold only to subscribers, never expire and are spent after rollover and fast tokens, but they stop working if you cancel, so a pack you might not use is a poor buy.

Relaxed generation is the clause buyers misread, because Premium and Ultimate can keep creating on Leonardo-hosted models after the fast pool hits zero, at lower priority and lower concurrency, so the job still gets made later.

The pricing page's relaxed image list is Lucid Origin, Lucid Realism, Phoenix 1.0, Phoenix 0.9, FLUX Dev, and FLUX Schnell, while relaxed video is Ultimate only, on models such as Motion 1.0, Motion 2.0, Motion 2.0 Fast, Hailuo 2.3, and Wan 2.6, so weekly video belongs on Ultimate rather than a cheaper individual seat.

GPT-Image, Flux.1 Kontext, Ideogram, Nano Banana, Veo, Kling, and Sora are named as models that always spend tokens, and Flow State always spends tokens too. If those are the models you run, the slower queue will not cut the bill.

Leonardo AI key features

Monthly fast tokens, plus a rollover bankEssential
Each paid plan includes a monthly fast-token pool, and unused tokens roll into a bank capped at three times that month's allowance, so a lighter month does not throw the balance away.
Relaxed generation on Leonardo's own modelsEssential
After the fast pool hits zero, Premium can keep making images on selected Leonardo-hosted models, and Ultimate can keep making video on selected ones. The queue is slower and third-party models are excluded, so outside models never get that fallback.
Private output from Essential upEssential
Free creations are public, so a client file does not belong on the free plan. Essential, Premium, and Ultimate mark generations private, and for client work that switch matters as much as the pool size.
Personal model training
Paid plans can train personal models from a small image set, with a monthly cap of 10 on Essential, 20 on Premium, and 50 on Ultimate. A studio that retrains often will outgrow the cheapest paid plan.
Team seats with a shared pool
Starter shows 25,000 fast tokens per seat and a shared pool, plus relaxed image and relaxed video. Individual Premium includes relaxed images only, so a small group that wants relaxed video should price the seat plan first.
API with no monthly fee
The API is pay as you go, which suits code that calls Leonardo and a poor fit when you need a fixed monthly line. The docs describe dollar charges and an in-app calculator, publish no per-generation list price, and sell custom deals through sales.

Leonardo AI pricing

Methodology: Individual and team prices, token allowances, and the relaxed-model rules were read on Leonardo's pricing page on October 16, 2026.

Yearly rates were read the same day on Leonardo's own Midjourney comparison, last updated August 11, 2026, which lists the same monthly prices the pricing page shows.

Competitor rates come from Midjourney's plan comparison, Ideogram's plan table, Black Forest Labs' pricing doc, and Adobe's generative credits FAQ.

The category median is from Toolradar. We did not generate images, so nothing here judges picture quality.

Per-token and per-image totals below are our arithmetic on those published rates.

On monthly billing, dividing the plan price by the fast-token allowance gives $1.41 per 1,000 tokens on Essential, $1.20 on Premium, and $1.00 on Ultimate.

A higher plan is cheaper per token once you generate most weeks, and Premium is the first individual plan with relaxed generation.

Essential has no relaxed queue, so when that pool is gone you buy a top-up or you stop, and the pricing page publishes no dollar price for those packs.

The free allowance is easy to overrate if you treat the daily grant as a monthly salary.

Using the full daily allowance for 30 days comes to 4,500 tokens, by our multiplication. Essential's monthly pool is 4,000 tokens larger than that, so it is not quite two months of maxed-out free use, and you can spend it in a burst while free tokens cannot be banked past the day.

Teams should compare a shared plan with separate subscriptions.

Three Premium subscriptions at the monthly rate come to $90 a month. The Starter team plan is shown at $72 a month for three seats, which is $18 less, with the same 75,000 fast tokens in a shared pool and with relaxed video that individual Premium does not include.

Listed prices exclude tax, and Leonardo says Stripe adds tax where it applies, so the card can sit above the price on the page.

A per-image comparison is possible only on the other side of the table. FLUX 3 Klein at 1K is $0.009 an image on Black Forest Labs' pricing doc, so 1,000 of those images cost $9.

Leonardo publishes no token-to-picture rate, so you cannot audit a Leonardo month the way you can audit a Flux invoice. For a step-by-step on the product itself, see Dupple's how to use Leonardo AI guide.

Leonardo AI pros and cons

What we like

  • Essential adds private generations and a rollover bank capped at three times the monthly allowance, so a lighter month keeps the unused balance.
  • Premium and Ultimate keep selected Leonardo-hosted models available after the fast pool hits zero, which is the fallback once fast tokens are spent.
  • A three-seat Starter plan costs less per month than three separate Premium subscriptions and adds relaxed video.

What could be better

  • Leonardo's own FAQ says one token is not a fixed image size, so the plan price is not a picture count.
  • Relaxed mode excludes named third-party models, so those workflows never reach the slower queue.
  • Free creations are public, Leonardo keeps rights in them, and you get a commercial license rather than ownership.

Who Leonardo AI is for

Leonardo fits a founder, marketer, or solo designer who tries several models in one place and generates often enough to use a monthly pool. Essential is the first plan with private output and a bank, which is the minimum when a client will see the files.

Premium is the first individual plan with relaxed images on Leonardo's own models, for weeks when you overrun the fast pool. Ultimate is the plan when video is a weekly job, because relaxed video is not on the cheaper individual plans.

A group of three is often better on Starter than on three separate Premium seats, because the shared plan costs less and adds relaxed video.

Skip the paid plans if you make a handful of public tests a week, because the free daily allowance covers that sample.

Skip Leonardo if the brief is words inside the picture and you want a published credit price for that job, which is what our Ideogram review is for.

Skip it if you want one house style and you are willing to pay before any test, which is the choice in our Midjourney review and Midjourney alternatives.

The bottom line

Pay for Leonardo if you will use a monthly pool, and stay on the free plan if you will not. Private files and a rollover bank start on the first paid plan, relaxed images on Leonardo's own models start on the next, and relaxed video starts on the top individual plan.

Do not buy Ultimate because you want every model in a free queue. That slower queue stays on Leonardo-hosted models, and third-party work keeps spending the pool.

Flux prints a price per picture, Ideogram prints a credit bundle when the words in the image are the job, and Midjourney is the subscription if you want one house style and can pay before you try. Adobe's credit counts are public, and its dollar prices stay on its own site.

Frequently asked questions

Is Leonardo AI worth it in 2026?

Yes, if you generate most weeks and need private output: Essential is the first paid plan with a rollover bank, so unused tokens can survive a quiet week. No, if you only need a few public tests, because the free daily allowance covers that sample. It is a weak buy when your work depends on third-party models, because those models never enter the relaxed queue.

How much does Leonardo AI cost?

The pricing page lists Free at no charge and Essential at $12 a month for 8,500 fast tokens. Premium is $30 a month for 25,000 fast tokens, and Ultimate is $60 a month for 60,000. Leonardo's comparison, updated August 11, 2026, lists yearly billing at $10, $24, and $48 a month for those three paid plans. A three-seat Starter team plan is shown at $72 a month, and the prices exclude tax, so the card can come in higher.

Does Leonardo AI have a free plan?

Yes, the free plan includes 150 fast tokens a day, public creations, and basic quality settings, and it does not expire. You can use the images commercially under a non-exclusive royalty-free license, while Leonardo keeps rights in them, which fits a public test but not a client file, and private generations start on Essential.

Can I use Leonardo images commercially?

Paid subscribers keep ownership of images they generate and can use them in commercial projects, according to Leonardo's pricing FAQ, so client work that needs a copyright you hold belongs on a paid plan. Free users get a non-exclusive royalty-free license, while Leonardo holds rights to use and distribute those images. If that split is unacceptable, do not make the client file on the free plan.

Does Leonardo's unlimited generation cover every model?

No, relaxed generation on Premium and Ultimate covers selected Leonardo-hosted models after fast tokens hit zero, in a slower queue, so you wait rather than getting a second catalog free. Third-party models, including GPT-Image, Flux.1 Kontext, Ideogram, Nano Banana, Veo, Kling, and Sora, still require tokens, and so does Flow State. Relaxed video is on Ultimate only, not on the cheaper individual plans.

Is Leonardo cheaper than Midjourney?

Leonardo has a free daily allowance and Midjourney does not, so you can sample Leonardo before you pay and you cannot sample Midjourney. Essential is Leonardo's first paid plan and Basic is Midjourney's, with no free month. Above that, Leonardo puts relaxed images on Premium, and Midjourney puts unlimited Relax images on Standard and above. A company over $1,000,000 in yearly gross revenue must be on Midjourney Pro or Mega for commercial use, and Leonardo's pricing FAQ sets no revenue test.
