Is Luma AI Worth It? Luma AI Review 2026
What the Plus pool buys in Ray3.14 seconds, when the API is the cheaper meter, and how Runway, Kling, Pika and Google AI compare on price.
Luma is worth Plus if you will use the credits every month, and a poor buy for a single clip. Plus is $30 a month for 10,000 credits and commercial use. Spent only on Ray3.14 at 720p, that pool is 500 seconds.
A 5-second Ray3.2 clip at 720p costs $0.30 on the API and the same amount out of a Plus month. The subscription does not discount that clip until yearly billing or Pro.
At 1080p HDR, Ray3.14 is four times the SDR rate, and Plus then covers 31.25 seconds, too little for a gradeable master. Motion and control, apart from price, are in our Kling vs Runway vs Luma comparison.
Key factsBest for: Monthly Ray video with commercial use, if you will spend…
- A monthly credit pool for Ray and other models, worth it when the credits get spent.
- Ray3.14 video on Plus at 720p: 500 seconds if the whole pool is spent at 20 credits a second, the plans-page rate for Ray3.14 text-to-video at 720p.
- Same Plus pool at 1080p: 125 seconds at the 80-credit SDR rate, and HDR on Ray3.14 multiplies that SDR rate, so a gradeable finish needs a larger pool.
- Median cheapest paid plan: Toolradar's median is $19.95 a month across 44 AI video tools that publish a price, as of October 17, 2026.
- Alternatives covered: Runway, Kling AI, Pika, Google AI
Pros
- Plus includes commercial use and guest editing, so a client can join without a second paid seat.
- A 5-second Ray3.2 clip at 720p is 100 credits, matching the API list price on a Plus month.
- The billing policy returns credits spent on failed generations, so a broken render is credited back.
Cons
- Unused monthly credits expire at the end of the billing cycle, so a quiet month is already spent.
- Ray3.14 at 1080p HDR is four times the SDR rate, so Plus covers 31.25 seconds, too short to deliver.
- Ray3.2 text-to-video and image-to-video do not generate native audio, so sound is a later cost.

A Luma subscription is a credit pool with a monthly floor, which suits a month of Ray clips and wastes the fee when the pool sits unused. If the month will not use the pool, the API is the cleaner way to buy Ray3.2, because that clip is the same price either way.
Plus is the first plan that includes commercial use, so client work starts there. It pulls ahead of the API only when yearly billing or a larger pool cuts the price of a credit.
AIpresso data: Toolradar tracks 148 AI video generation tools as of October 17, 2026. The median cheapest paid plan, across the 44 that publish one, is $19.95 a month, so Plus sits above the middle of the category.
Dream Machine, the name Toolradar still uses for this product, is listed as an alternative to 88 other tools in that set. The figures are on Toolradar's AI video generation ranking.
What is Luma AI?
Luma is a creative studio that meters video, image, and audio through one credit pool. The homepage leads with Ray3.2 and with Luma Agents, which research and generate across video, image, audio, and text.
You buy the studio as a subscription if the credits will be spent. The API sells Ray3.2 by the clip, with no monthly floor.
Plus is the entry paid plan, and the card lists commercial use, guest edit access, and both Luma's models and third-party ones, so client work can be invoiced from there. Pro and Ultra raise the pool and the Agents allowance when the entry month will not last.
Team and Enterprise are sales conversations, so shared seats and SSO have no public price. Toolradar keeps profiles for Luma AI, Runway, Kling AI, and Pika.
Ray3.2, on Luma's Ray3.2 page, generates text-to-video and image-to-video clips of 5 or 10 seconds, and it lets you set up to 16 keyframes. That is enough to steer a shot, and a longer scene is several charges.
Those two modes do not generate native audio, so voice, music, and effects are a later cost. Modify Video can keep the original audio when only the picture needs to change.
How Luma AI works
Credits are the only meter that matters, because every model draws from the same three pools. Ray3.14 text-to-video at 720p spends 20 credits a second, so a Plus month is 500 seconds if every second is a keeper.
At 1080p the rate is 80 credits a second, and that month is 125 seconds. Choosing the sharper master is what empties the entry pool.
HDR multiplies the rate, and the plans page marks Ray3.14 HDR as four times the SDR rate, so 1080p HDR is 320 credits a second and Plus lasts 31.25 seconds. A gradeable finish does not fit that entry pool.
Ray3.2 HDR is two times SDR, and HDR plus an EXR export is three times. A gradeable file then costs two or three ordinary clips.
A 5-second Ray3.2 clip at 720p SDR is 100 credits, and on Plus that is $0.30, which is also the list price on Luma's API pricing. Yearly Plus works out to $25 a month, or $0.0025 a credit, so the same clip falls to $0.25.
Pro, at $90 for 40,000 credits, is $0.00225 a credit, and the clip falls to $0.225. That cut pays only if the larger pool gets used.
Third-party models spend the same pool at their own rates. Kling 3.0 inside Luma is 30 credits a second at 720p without audio, which is $0.09 a second on Plus, against $0.084 a second on Kling's own API. Luma stays the costlier meter for Kling until the credit gets cheaper on Pro or Ultra.

Luma AI key features
Luma AI pricing
Methodology: Plan prices, credit rates, and plan features were checked on October 17, 2026, on Luma's plans page, Luma's API pricing, the Ray3.2 page, and Luma's billing policy (last updated April 23, 2026).
Competitor prices come from Runway's pricing page, Kling's API video rates, Pika's pricing page, and Google AI subscriptions, read the same day. The category median is from Toolradar's AI video ranking. We did not generate clips, so nothing here judges picture quality.
The yearly prices in the table work out to $25, $75, and $250 a month if you stay the whole year. Each app tier includes a monthly credit allocation, and unused credits expire at the end of the cycle, so a quiet month is already spent.
Failed generations come back as spendable credits, and leaving a yearly plan mid-year recalculates months already used at the monthly rate before any refund of the rest. Per-clip figures on this page are our multiplications of published rates, not invoices, and they assume you keep every second.
A 5-second Ray3.2 clip at 1080p SDR is 400 credits, or $1.20 of a Plus month, which matches the API list price for that clip. The API prices Ray3.2 and Uni-1.1 and publishes no Ray3.14 row, so the newer model has to be paid from the subscription.
| Plan | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Plus | $30/mo or $300/yr | 10,000 credits a month, Luma and third-party models, guest editing, commercial use |

| Ultra | $300/mo or $3,000/yr | 150,000 credits a month and 15x usage with Luma Agents, including everything on Pro |
| Team | Contact us | Shared team credits, member management, projects, usage analytics, and SSO |
| Enterprise | Contact us | Team features plus commitments, training, and custom fine-tuning |

Luma AI pros and cons
What we like
- Plus includes commercial use and guest editing, so a client can join without a second paid seat.
- A 5-second Ray3.2 clip at 720p is 100 credits, matching the API list price on a Plus month.
- The billing policy returns credits spent on failed generations, so a broken render is credited back.
What could be better
- Unused monthly credits expire at the end of the billing cycle, so a quiet month is already spent.
- Ray3.14 at 1080p HDR is four times the SDR rate, so Plus covers 31.25 seconds, too short to deliver.
- Ray3.2 text-to-video and image-to-video do not generate native audio, so sound is a later cost.
Who Luma AI is for
Plus fits a person or a small team that will publish Ray clips every month and needs commercial use on the invoice. At the 720p Ray3.14 rate, that is roughly 100 five-second clips if you discard nothing, which is the volume that makes the floor worth paying.
Teams that burn HDR, 1080p, or Veo inside Luma should price Pro or Ultra before they sign. Those rates shrink the pool, and the entry month will not finish the job.
Skip the subscription for a one-off, because the API charges the same Ray3.2 list price with no monthly floor. Skip Luma when the job is a presenter who talks for minutes, since that job is an avatar tool, covered in our HeyGen review.

Best Luma AI alternatives
If Luma AI is not the right fit, these are the closest options.
| Tool | Best for | Starts at | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luma AI | Monthly Ray video with commercial use, if you will spend the credits. | Plus $30/mo for 10,000 credits and commercial use | Visit → |
| Runway | Short Gen-4.5 clips on a smaller monthly bill than Plus. | From $12/mo billed yearly ($15 monthly), 625 credits, about 52 seconds | Visit → |
| Kling AI | Per-second Kling 3.0 billing, without a monthly Luma floor. | API only here: $0.084/sec at 720p without audio, $0.112/sec at 1080p, | Visit → |
| Pika | A lower monthly bill, if client work can wait for Creator. | Starter $10/mo ($8 yearly), 900 credits, no commercial license | Visit → |
| Google AI | A Google plan that includes Flow credits and, on Ultra, Veo 3.1. | From $4.99/mo (AI Plus, 200 Flow credits) | Visit → |
The bottom line
Buy Plus if the month will consume the credits and the clips need a commercial license. A Ray3.2 720p clip costs the same on the API until you take yearly billing or Pro, so the bet is that the pool gets used. Count discarded takes early, because expiry means unused credits are gone.
Skip the subscription for a single clip, for 1080p HDR, or for a talking presenter. Use the API when Ray3.2 volume is occasional, since that meter has no monthly floor. Use Kling's rate card when you only want Kling, and Runway when a short Gen-4.5 month is the brief and the lower bill matters.
