Cheaper Runway Alternatives in 2026

Seven generators priced on one 5-second 720p clip, set against Runway Gen-4.5 on a yearly Standard plan.

TL;DR

LTX-2.3 Fast is the cheapest 720p rate here, at $0.03 a second on the API, which is $0.15 for a 5-second clip. PixVerse V6 with audio off is $0.20 for that clip, and Kling 2.6 with no audio is $0.21. Runway Gen-4.5 on yearly Standard is $1.15 for the same 5 seconds.

Those rates were read on vendor pages on October 17, 2026. Luma stays under that Runway clip at 720p and loses the gap at 1080p. Veo 3.1 Lite is a cheap API rate, and Veo 3.1 Standard is not.

  • Updated: October 22, 2026
  • Top pick: LTX (Lightricks) (best for: Developers who want the lowest published 720p rate and can call an API)
  • Top pick price as of October 22, 2026: LTX (Lightricks): LTX-2.3 Fast is $0.03/sec at 720p on the API. Studio Lite is $15/mo, or $144 billed yearly.
  • 7 tools compared: LTX (Lightricks), PixVerse, Kling AI, Google Veo 3.1, Luma AI, Pika, Hailuo (MiniMax)
  • PixVerse (best for: API builders who want a firm 720p price and a separate switch for audio): V6, audio off, 720p is $0.04/sec on the API, or $0.20 for a 5-second clip.
  • Kling AI (best for: Creators who want a cheap 720p API rate and a commercial plan under $10): 2.6 at 720p with no audio is $0.042/sec on the API. Standard renews at $8.80/mo.
  • Google Veo 3.1 (best for: People who can stay on Veo Lite or Omni Flash and will not default to the standard model): Veo 3.1 Lite is $0.05/sec on the paid API. Google AI Pro is $19.99/mo.

Runway's yearly Standard plan looks like a budget seat until you price a clip. Gen-4.5 spends 12 credits a second, and that $12 pool buys only a short stretch of it. The seven tools below publish a lower rate for a short 720p clip, with one catch: a few of them stop being cheaper as soon as you raise the resolution or turn audio on.

AIpresso data: Toolradar tracks 148 AI video generation tools as of October 17, 2026, and the median cheapest paid plan is $19.95 a month across the 44 that publish a price, on our AI video generation ranking. Runway's sticker sits under that median and still loses this comparison on seconds. Motion and control, apart from the bill, are in Kling vs Runway vs Luma.

The order is the cost of one 5-second clip at 720p, or the nearest resolution the vendor actually prices, with audio off when the vendor bills audio separately. A keeper that takes three generations costs three times the figure, and that multiplier is our assumption, not a vendor's.

Top Pick

LTX (Lightricks)

The cheapest firm 720p rate in this set, on an API, with a separate Studio app whose free plan is personal use only.

Pricing
LTX-2.3 Fast is $0.03/sec at 720p on the API. Studio Lite is $15/mo, or $144 billed yearly.

Best for: Developers who want the lowest published 720p rate and can call an API.

Pros

  • Five seconds of LTX-2.3 Fast at 720p is $0.15, for both text-to-video and image-to-video
  • The same model at 1080p is $0.06 a second, still under Runway's API clip
  • Studio Lite includes 8,000 credits a month, or $144 when the year is paid up front

Cons

  • That rate is an API price, not a timeline editor with a monthly seat
  • Studio Free is 800 credits once, and the page limits it to personal projects, not paid work
2 PixVerse logo

PixVerse

A per-second API rate card where V6 at 720p with audio off undercuts Runway Gen-4.5 on both the plan and the API.

Pricing
V6, audio off, 720p is $0.04/sec on the API, or $0.20 for a 5-second clip.

Best for: API builders who want a firm 720p price and a separate switch for audio.

Pros

  • V6 with audio off is 9 credits a second at 720p, and 45 credits is $0.20 at 225 credits per dollar
  • Audio off at 1080p is $0.08 a second, and five seconds of that is still cheaper than Runway's API clip
  • The card states 225 credits equal $1, which is how the per-second dollar figures are derived

Cons

  • Turning audio on at 720p moves V6 to $0.053 a second, and a video-reference generation is higher still
  • This rate is the API card, so a creator who wants a browser editor still has to price the app separately
3 Kling AI logo

Kling AI

The consumer plan renews at $8.80 for 660 credits, and the API's cheapest 720p video rate is Kling 2.6 without audio.

Pricing
2.6 at 720p with no audio is $0.042/sec on the API. Standard renews at $8.80/mo.

Best for: Creators who want a cheap 720p API rate and a commercial plan under $10.

Pros

  • Kling 2.6 with no native audio is $0.042 a second at 720p on the API, or $0.21 for five seconds
  • Kling 3.0 with no native audio is $0.084 a second at 720p, still under Runway's API clip, and the model guide prices that mode at 6 credits a second
  • Standard renews at $8.80 a month for 660 credits with commercial use, after a first-month price of $6.99

Cons

  • Native audio on Kling 3.0 at 720p is $0.126 a second on the API, and 4K is $0.42 a second
  • The free Basic plan is not for commercial use, and monthly credits on Standard do not roll over
4 Google Veo 3.1 logo

Google Veo 3.1

Lite is a cheap per-second API rate with audio included, while the standard Veo model costs more than Runway.

Pricing
Veo 3.1 Lite is $0.05/sec on the paid API. Google AI Pro is $19.99/mo.

Best for: People who can stay on Veo Lite or Omni Flash and will not default to the standard model.

Pros

  • Veo 3.1 Lite is $0.05 a second at 720p and 1080p on the paid Gemini API, audio included, so five seconds is $0.25
  • Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month with 200 Flow credits, and an 8-second Omni Flash clip at 720p costs 12 of them
  • On Pro, a Veo 3.1 Lite clip of 4, 6 or 8 seconds costs 10 Flow credits, against a pool of 1,000

Cons

  • Veo 3.1 Standard is $0.40 a second at 720p with audio, and five seconds is $2, more than yearly Standard Gen-4.5
  • The subscriptions page calls Veo 3.1 Lite on Pro a limited trial, and the free API tier does not include Veo
5 Luma AI logo

Luma AI

A credit pool that makes Ray3.14 cheap at 720p, then four times as expensive at 1080p on the same model.

Pricing
Plus is $30/mo ($25/mo yearly) for 10,000 credits. Ray3.14 at 720p is 20 credits/sec.

Best for: Editors who want a studio app and will stay at 720p rather than 1080p.

Pros

  • Plus is $30 a month for 10,000 credits and commercial use, or $25 a month when $300 is billed yearly
  • Ray3.14 text-to-video at 720p is 20 credits a second, so five seconds is 100 credits, or $0.30 on monthly Plus
  • Spent only on that 720p rate, the Plus pool is 500 seconds

Cons

  • Ray3.14 at 1080p is 80 credits a second, so the same five seconds is $1.20 on monthly Plus, in line with yearly Standard Gen-4.5
  • The plans page lists Plus, Pro and Ultra, and it does not show a free tier
6 Pika logo

Pika

A credit app where Wan at 720p is cheap and Seedance 2.5 at the same length costs more than Runway.

Pricing
Creator is $35/mo or $28/mo yearly, with 3,150 credits. A 5-second 720p Wan clip is 33 credits.

Best for: Creators who will generate with Wan inside Pika and need the commercial license on Creator.

Pros

  • Creator is $35 a month for 3,150 credits with a commercial license, or $28 a month billed yearly
  • Wan 3.0 at 720p for 5 seconds is 33 credits, which is $0.37 on monthly Creator
  • Pika 2.5 text-to-video on the API is listed from $0.04 a second, a floor rather than a flat 720p rate

Cons

  • Seedance 2.5 at 720p for 5 seconds is 122 credits, about $1.36 on monthly Creator, which is more than the Runway clip
  • Starter is $10 a month for 900 credits and the plan table marks commercial use as off, while Free lists zero monthly credits
7 Hailuo (MiniMax) logo

Hailuo (MiniMax)

A subscribe page that prints an H3 per-second rate and a Standard plan whose first-month price is a promotion.

Pricing
Standard is $14.99/mo for 1,000 credits. H3 at 768p is listed at $0.074/sec.

Best for: Creators who want MiniMax H3 near 720p and will budget the list price, not the promo.

Pros

  • The subscribe page lists MiniMax H3 at 768p as $0.074 a second on monthly Standard, or $0.37 for five seconds
  • Standard is $14.99 a month for 1,000 credits, watermark-free downloads, and about 40 six-second 768p videos on Hailuo's own estimate
  • Hailuo's subscribe-page answer says content generated on a paid plan can be used commercially, subject to its terms

Cons

  • The $7.99 figure is a limited-time offer, and the page says the price returns to $14.99
  • H3 at 2K on monthly Standard is listed at $0.126 a second, close to Runway's API rate and far above the 768p label

What it is

A cheaper Runway alternative is an AI video generator whose published price for a short 720p clip is lower than Gen-4.5 on Runway Standard. The job is the same one: a text prompt or a still becomes a few seconds of generated footage, metered in credits or in cents per second.

Plan names do not compare. A Runway Standard month and a Luma Plus month buy different amounts of video, so this page prices one clip, then says where that ranking flips. Avatar tools that film a presenter reading a script are a different purchase, covered in our best AI video generators ranking.

Why it matters

Gen-4.5 is 60 credits for 5 seconds on Runway's pricing page, and the FAQ on that page states 12 credits a second. Yearly Standard is $12 for 625 credits, which Runway converts to 52 seconds of Gen-4.5. Divide the plan price by the pool, then multiply by 60 credits, and the 5-second clip is $1.15. The API is a separate meter: Runway's developer pricing sells credits at $0.01 each, so the same 60-credit clip is $0.60, and yearly Pro lands near $0.75.

Even yearly Max, at $76 for 9,500 credits, is about $0.48 for that clip. The headline 720p rate on each tool below beats that Max clip. Veo Fast, Veo Standard, Kling at 4K, Luma at 1080p, and Seedance inside Pika do not. If you discard two takes per keeper, the keeper is $3.45 on yearly Standard and $0.45 on LTX-2.3 Fast.

Standard and Pro credits reset each cycle and do not roll over. Max rolls one month of unused credits, and extra credits you buy never expire, with a 1,000-credit minimum and no public per-credit price on the consumer page. When a rate moves, we log it in the AIpresso brief. Subscribe free if you want that note instead of rechecking seven pricing pages.

Key features to look for

Price per finished second
The number that matters is the published rate for a 5-second 720p clip, not the cheapest plan name. Yearly Standard is the bill this list is trying to beat.
Audio as a separate switch
Kling, PixVerse and several API cards charge more when native audio is on. A no-audio quote is not the price of a talking clip.
Resolution cliffs
Luma Ray3.14 at 720p is 20 credits a second and 80 credits a second at 1080p. The cheap ranking is a 720p ranking.
Commercial use and watermarks
Kling's free plan bars commercial use. Pika's commercial license starts on Creator, not Starter. Hailuo's paid plans are the ones that remove the watermark.
API rate versus the app pool
LTX, PixVerse, Kling and Veo publish a cents-per-second API price. Luma, Hailuo and Pika also sell a monthly credit pool, and the pool price is the one an app user pays.

Pricing

Methodology: On October 17, 2026 we priced one 5-second clip at 720p, with audio off when the vendor publishes that switch, using each vendor's own page. The Runway figure is the yearly Standard price times 60 credits, divided by the credit pool. Luma's is 100 credits times the monthly Plus price, divided by 10,000. Pika's Wan clip is 33 credits times $35, divided by 3,150. Hailuo's five-second figure is five times the per-second label on its subscribe page. Nothing here is a generated clip, so picture quality is outside the ranking. Editorial rules are on the AIpresso about page.

Yearly Pro is the plan Runway marks for regular use, and its 2,250 credits make the 5-second Gen-4.5 clip about $0.75, still above every 720p row here. The gap closes in the other direction on Luma at 1080p, on Veo Standard, on Kling 4K, and on Seedance inside Pika. Our Runway pricing breakdown keeps the full credit table, and the Runway review is the verdict on staying.

Category counts and the median plan price are from Toolradar's AI video ranking, which we publish. Profiles: LTX Studio, PixVerse, Kling AI, Veo, Luma AI, Pika, Hailuo, and Runway.

Mistakes to avoid
×Comparing plan stickers. Luma Plus costs more per month than Runway Standard and still produces a cheaper 720p clip, until you move that same model to 1080p.
×Leaving audio on and keeping the no-audio quote. Kling 3.0 at 720p jumps when native audio is enabled, and PixVerse V6 does the same.
×Opening Seedance inside Pika because the app is cheap. A 5-second Seedance 2.5 clip at 720p is 122 credits, and on monthly Creator that is more than Gen-4.5 on yearly Standard.
Expert tips
→Price Gen-4.5 first, then Gen-4 Turbo only if you are willing to stay on Runway. Turbo is 5 credits a second, under half of Gen-4.5, and it still does not beat the 720p rates at the top of this list.
→If the clip must be 1080p, recompute Luma before you switch. Ray3.14 at 1080p spends 80 credits a second, and monthly Plus then costs about as much as the Runway clip you were leaving.
→Treat first-month prices as a trial. Kling's $6.99 and Hailuo's $7.99 are introductory, and the renewal figures are the ones to budget.

The bottom line

For a 5-second 720p clip with audio off, LTX-2.3 Fast is the lowest published rate in this set. PixVerse V6 and Kling 2.6 are the next firm API prices, and both stay under Runway's developer clip as well as the yearly Standard clip. Use Kling AI pricing if you need the membership math, and the Kling review if the question is the model rather than the meter.

Pick Luma when you want the studio and you will actually stay at 720p. Pick Veo Lite, or Omni Flash on Plus, when a Google plan is already in the budget, and skip Veo Standard if the point of leaving Runway was the bill. Pika is the cheap path only on Wan, not on Seedance. Hailuo is the path when 768p H3 is enough and you budget the list price. Our Luma review, Veo pricing, free AI video generators, and AI video statistics cover the neighboring questions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest Runway alternative in 2026?

LTX-2.3 Fast, at $0.03 a second for 720p text-to-video on Lightricks' API, read on October 17, 2026. A 5-second clip is $0.15. PixVerse V6 with audio off is $0.20 for the same length, and Kling 2.6 with no audio is $0.21. Runway Gen-4.5 on yearly Standard is $1.15.

How much does a 5-second Runway Gen-4.5 clip cost?

About $1.15 on yearly Standard. The plan is $12 a month for 625 credits, and Gen-4.5 is 60 credits for 5 seconds, both from Runway's pricing page on October 17, 2026. On the API, at one cent a credit, the same clip is $0.60. Monthly Standard is $15 for that same pool, so the clip costs more than the yearly figure.

Is Kling cheaper than Runway?

Yes at 720p without native audio. Kling 2.6 is $0.042 a second on the API, and Kling 3.0 is $0.084 a second, against about $0.23 a second for Gen-4.5 on yearly Standard. The saving disappears at 4K, which Kling prices at $0.42 a second, and it shrinks when you turn native audio on.

Is Google Veo cheaper than Runway?

Veo 3.1 Lite is cheaper, at $0.05 a second with audio on the paid Gemini API. Veo 3.1 Fast is $0.10 a second. Veo 3.1 Standard is $0.40 a second, and five seconds of that model costs more than five seconds of Gen-4.5 on yearly Standard. Pro is $19.99 a month and describes Lite as a limited trial.

Does Luma stay cheaper than Runway at 1080p?

No, not on monthly Plus. Ray3.14 at 720p is 20 credits a second, and five seconds is $0.30 of a $30 Plus month. At 1080p the rate is 80 credits a second, and those five seconds are $1.20, in line with the yearly Standard Gen-4.5 clip. Pro is $90 a month for 40,000 credits if you need the higher resolution often.

Is there a free alternative to Runway?

There are samples, not a renewable commercial substitute. Runway's free plan is 125 credits once. LTX Studio Free is 800 credits once and limited to personal projects. Kling's free plan bars commercial use. Pika's free plan lists zero monthly credits. Google's free API tier does not include Veo. The cheap paid rates above are the practical alternative, and our free video generators page covers the $0 plans in more detail.

What does Runway still do that these cheaper tools do not?

It sells Gen-4.5, Aleph, Seedance, Kling and other models inside one credit pool, with an editor rather than an API key. That bundle is why a team might keep Standard even after reading this page. If the only requirement is a short 720p clip at the lowest published rate, LTX-2.3 Fast is the better bill. The image-to-video picks are a separate list if the input is a still rather than a prompt.
