TL;DR

QuillBot Premium is worth it in 2026 if you paraphrase, summarize or humanize text most weeks and pay yearly. $99.95 a year works out to $8.33 a month, while the same plan costs $39.95 a quarter or $19.95 a month. For a student who needs it for one semester, two quarters cost $79.90, less than the yearly plan; for anyone who keeps it longer than five months, yearly billing wins.

The free plan is enough for short rewrites, since it paraphrases up to 100 words at a time in two modes. Pick Grammarly Pro instead if your problem is correcting what you send to others, Wordtune for cheap in-browser rewrites, and ChatGPT if you want one general assistant that also paraphrases.

QuillBot is the paraphraser most students and non-native writers meet first, and the free tier is genuinely usable. The real question is whether the paid tier's extra modes, humanizer, plagiarism check and longer summaries justify a yearly bill. For most regular users the answer is yes, but only on yearly billing, because the monthly plan costs more than double per month.

Toolradar data: QuillBot is listed as an alternative to 17 other tools, which puts it #17 (joint) of the 138 AI writing tools on its Toolradar profile, the software directory we run, and visitors compare it most often with DeepL (October 2026). In that category 61% of tools have a free plan, so a usable free tier is the norm rather than a perk.

Below we cover what Free and Premium include, what each billing option costs over a semester and a year, the team seat prices, and how Grammarly, Wordtune, ProWritingAid and ChatGPT price the same job. Every price was read on the vendor's own pages in October 2026.

What is QuillBot?

QuillBot is a writing toolkit built around a paraphraser: paste a sentence or paragraph, choose a mode, and it returns a reworded version you can accept word by word. Around that core sit a grammar checker, a summarizer, an AI humanizer, an AI detector, a plagiarism checker, a citation generator, a translator and an AI chat and writing space called QuillBot Flow.

The Premium comparison table lists paraphrasing in 23 languages, translation into 40+ languages and grammar correction in 6 languages. It runs in the browser, as Chrome and Edge extensions, as a macOS app and as a Word add-in, so it reaches most places a student or office writer drafts text.

How QuillBot works

On the free plan you paraphrase up to 100 words per pass in the Standard and Fluency modes and fix basic grammar errors. You can also summarize up to 1,200 words and try the humanizer and AI detector with limited usage. That covers a sentence that sounds wrong or an abstract you need shorter, but a full essay has to be fed through in chunks.

Premium removes the paraphrasing cap, opens 9 built-in modes plus custom modes you define yourself. It also raises the summarizer to 6,000 words, adds 25,000 words a month of plagiarism checking, full humanizer access with history and insights, and 100 MB of Flow storage instead of 10 MB. QuillBot also lets you pause a Premium subscription and resume it when you need it, which matters for anyone whose writing comes in bursts.

QuillBot key features

Paraphraser with 9 modes and custom modesEssential
The paraphraser is the reason to buy. Premium adds 7 modes beyond the free Standard and Fluency, and unlimited custom modes for a voice of your own. In practice, a dense academic paragraph and a casual email can be reworded in very different registers.
Humanizer and AI detector in the same account
Premium gives full access to both, with humanizer history and insights. That pairing suits writers who draft with AI and then edit, though no detector or humanizer is a guarantee, and a school's own policy matters more than any score.
Plagiarism checking, capped at 25,000 words a month
The cap is about eight 3,000-word essays a month. A student checks every paper inside it; an editor processing client manuscripts will hit it, so heavy checkers should compare Grammarly Pro, which bundles a plagiarism check of its own.
Summarizer that scales to 6,000 words
Free summarizes 1,200 words, Premium 6,000, with custom summaries on Premium. For reading-heavy courses or long reports, the five-fold jump is often the feature people notice first after upgrading.
Pause instead of cancel
QuillBot lets you pause Premium and pick it up later, which suits students between terms. Combined with quarterly billing, it keeps the cost close to the weeks you actually write.

QuillBot pricing

QuillBot sells Free and Premium to individuals and a Team plan for two or more seats. Premium is billed monthly, quarterly or yearly at the rates in the table below, as listed on QuillBot's Premium pricing FAQ and its Premium page, checked in October 2026. QuillBot notes that prices can adjust to your region and currency at checkout, so a buyer outside the US may see a different figure.

Scenario one, a student who needs it for one six-month term: two quarterly payments cost $79.90 and six monthly payments $119.70, so quarterly is the cheapest route, about $20 under the yearly plan. Pausing between terms keeps that saving.

Scenario two, a writer who uses it all year: twelve monthly payments cost $239.40 against the yearly price, a saving of $139.45. The break-even sits at five months: five monthly payments already cost $99.75, so anyone who expects to keep it longer should pay yearly.

Scenario three, a team: Team seats cost $89.95 a seat a year for 2 to 10 seats ($7.50 a month), $79.95 for 11 to 50 and $69.95 from 51 seats, with a dashboard and centralized billing. Five seats cost $449.75 a year, $50 less than five individual yearly plans.

For context, a year of Grammarly Pro costs $144 on yearly billing, ProWritingAid Premium $120, Wordtune Unlimited about $84 and ChatGPT Plus $240 at its monthly rate. Prices come from the Grammarly Pro pricing, Wordtune pricing, ProWritingAid pricing and ChatGPT pricing pages. Methodology: list prices in USD, read on each vendor's own page in October 2026, with yearly totals computed from the stated rates; we did not run accuracy tests.

Who QuillBot is for

Buy Premium yearly if you rewrite or summarize text several times a week: students working in a second language, researchers condensing sources, marketers producing variants of the same copy. Buy it quarterly if your writing follows a term calendar. Our guide to using AI for essays covers where paraphrasing helps and where it crosses a line.

Stay on Free if you only fix the odd sentence, since 100 words per pass in two modes handles that. Skip QuillBot entirely if your need is proofreading outgoing email and documents in every app, where a grammar-first tool fits better; our free grammar checkers page compares them. If you mainly want to get past AI detection, compare dedicated tools in our AI humanizer ranking before paying.

The bottom line

QuillBot Premium is a good buy for regular paraphrasing on yearly or quarterly billing, and a poor one month to month. The modes, humanizer, larger summaries and plagiarism allowance are what free users miss, and at the yearly rate it undercuts Grammarly Pro and ProWritingAid. Choose Grammarly when correction matters more than rewording, Wordtune when price matters most, and ChatGPT when you want one assistant for everything.

Frequently asked questions

Is QuillBot Premium worth it in 2026?

Yes if you paraphrase, summarize or humanize text several times a week and pay yearly, at $8.33 a month. On monthly billing it is poor value for anyone who keeps it longer than five months, and occasional users are better served by the free plan's 100-word paraphraser.

How much does QuillBot cost?

QuillBot Free costs nothing. Premium costs $19.95 a month, $39.95 every three months or $99.95 a year, as listed on QuillBot's own pricing pages in October 2026. Team seats cost $69.95 to $89.95 per seat a year depending on team size. QuillBot says prices can vary by region at checkout.

What does the free QuillBot plan include?

The free plan paraphrases up to 100 words at a time in the Standard and Fluency modes, fixes basic grammar errors, summarizes up to 1,200 words and gives limited access to the humanizer and AI detector. It has no plagiarism checker and no custom modes.

Is QuillBot cheaper than Grammarly?

Yes on every billing option. A year of QuillBot Premium costs $44 less than a year of Grammarly Pro at $144, and month to month QuillBot also undercuts Grammarly's $30. Grammarly's extra buys stronger correction across apps and 2,000 AI prompts a month, so the cheaper tool is not automatically the better one.

Can I pay for QuillBot for just one semester?

Yes. Quarterly billing covers three months at a time, so a six-month term costs $79.90, less than the yearly plan, and QuillBot lets you pause Premium between terms instead of cancelling.
