AI Image Generator Statistics 2026: Users, Prices and Output

AI image generator statistics for 2026: 3 billion ChatGPT images a week, 50 billion Nano Banana images, and the price of one image across 8 tools.

AI Image Generator Statistics 2026: Users, Prices and Output

No company counts AI image users across the whole market, but the two biggest platforms put output in the billions: OpenAI said on September 8, 2026 that people create more than 3 billion images a week in ChatGPT and its API, and Google said on May 19, 2026 that its Nano Banana models had produced more than 50 billion images. One image costs from under $0.01 to about $0.08, depending on the tool.

That price spread is what most buyers misjudge, because a subscription that looks cheap can cost more per image than a pay-per-use API, and the reverse happens just as often. Toolradar data: the software directory we run tracks 171 AI image generation tools as of October 21, 2026, and 125 of them (73%) offer a free tier; 157 of the 171 were added to the directory during 2026 (AI image generation statistics on Toolradar).

Read the table as separate snapshots rather than one dashboard. Each company reports a different unit (weekly images, cumulative images, monthly users) on a different date, so adding the rows together would produce a market total that nobody actually measured.

How many people use AI image generators?

The best proxy for AI image users in 2026 is the audience of the two general assistants that generate images by default: ChatGPT with more than 1.2 billion weekly users and the Gemini app with more than 900 million monthly users. Neither figure counts only image users; both count everyone who can make an image with one prompt, which is why they say more about reach than any standalone app's numbers.

Google's own growth figure shows how fast this moved. Sundar Pichai said at I/O on May 19, 2026 that the Gemini app had 400 million monthly users a year earlier and had since passed 900 million, more than doubling, and he called Nano Banana "a breakout star" of that year. For a buyer, the practical point is that the default image tool for most people is now whichever assistant they already use.

The creative suites report users differently. Adobe's Q3 fiscal 2026 results of September 10, 2026 counted 1 billion monthly active users across its creativity and productivity products (Adobe Q3 results). That total includes Acrobat and Express users who may never touch Firefly, so it is a ceiling for Adobe's AI image reach, not a measure of it.

Specialist tools such as Midjourney, Ideogram, Leonardo and Krea sit outside these totals. Their sites lead with plans and models rather than audience size, so treat a quoted "Midjourney users" figure as an outside estimate unless it links to the company itself.

How many AI images are made each year?

OpenAI's weekly figure works out to about 430 million images a day, or more than 156 billion a year at that pace (our arithmetic on OpenAI's floor). It covers ChatGPT Images and the GPT-Image models in the API together, so it is the closest thing to a live production rate any vendor publishes.

Google's and Adobe's counts work differently, because both are cumulative totals that measure history rather than current pace. Adobe's figure of more than 22 billion assets also mixes images with videos, and at April 2025 it is the oldest number on this page; Adobe's September 2026 results did not refresh it.

What the output figures do show is concentration. The general assistants report output in billions per week or tens of billions to date, which pushes specialist tools to compete on style, text rendering and control rather than on volume.

The 2026 model releases behind these numbers

OpenAI, Google and Midjourney all shipped new image models during 2026, which is one reason statistics pages from last year age badly. The dates below come from each vendor's own announcement or documentation.

How much does one AI image cost?

Across the eight tools we priced, one standard image costs between $0.009 and about $0.08 in October 2026, and the cheapest route depends on volume, not on the brand. APIs print a per-image price, while subscriptions sell credits, GPU time or tokens, so we converted each plan into a cost per image with the vendor's own conversion figures. That conversion is our arithmetic, not a price any vendor prints.

Tool and plan What you pay Images it buys Cost per image, our arithmetic
FLUX 3 Image Klein (API) $0.009 per 1K image Pay per image $0.009
Midjourney Basic, monthly $10 a month About 1,000 (250 Fast prompts of 4 images at 0.8 GPU minutes each) About $0.01
OpenAI GPT Image 2.5, medium (API) $30 per million image output tokens 439 output tokens per 1024x1024 image $0.013, plus prompt tokens
Stability AI Stable Image Core (API) 3 credits at $0.01 each Pay per image $0.03
Google Nano Banana 2.1 (API) $30 per million image output tokens 1,120 tokens per 1K image $0.0336
FLUX 3 Image (API) $0.048 per 1K image Pay per image $0.048
Ideogram Plus, monthly $20 a month 400 priority images (2,400 credits at 6 credits per Ideogram 4.5 Medium image) $0.05
Krea Pro, monthly $35 a month 450 Nano Banana 2 generations, per Krea About $0.078

Three popular tools do not fit a per-image figure at all, which is worth knowing before you compare them on price. Adobe Firefly's paid plans include unlimited standard image generations with Firefly's own models, so the marginal cost of an extra standard image is zero. Leonardo says a token "doesn't correspond to a specific image", so its token allowance cannot be converted honestly. And ChatGPT's consumer plans describe image creation as "limited", "more" or "unlimited" on the pricing page rather than as a monthly image count.

The subscription numbers are best cases. Midjourney's 0.8 minutes is its own "approximate" figure for a standard-definition prompt; HD prompts take 1.3 minutes and upscales 2 minutes, which cuts the image count. Ideogram's High rendering costs 10 credits instead of 6. The Midjourney pricing breakdown and Ideogram pricing guide cover the limits plan by plan.

What the subscription plans cost in 2026

Entry plans for the main AI image generators run from $8 to $20 a month on monthly billing, and most of them cost less on annual billing. The table lists the monthly price and, where the vendor prints one, the annual-billing price.

Tool Entry plan, monthly billing Same plan, billed annually Next tier, monthly billing Free option
Midjourney Basic $10 $8 a month ($96 a year) Standard $30 Limited trial in the niji·journey mobile app only
Ideogram Plus $20 $15 a month ($180 a year) Pro $60 Weekly credits for eligible free accounts
Leonardo Essential $12 $10 a month Premium $30 150 tokens a day
Adobe Firefly Standard $9.99 Plans listed at monthly prices Pro $19.99 Free daily generations without a plan
Krea Basic $9 Up to 40% off, per Krea Pro $35 100 units a day
ChatGPT Go $8 Monthly only Plus $20 Free, limited image creation

Two details change the math. Midjourney's Standard plan is where unlimited Relax images start, so heavy users end up on the $30 tier rather than the entry plan. And Leonardo's Premium plan adds unlimited relaxed generation on selected image models only, which matters if the model you want is not on that list. Our Leonardo AI pricing, Adobe Firefly pricing and Krea AI pricing pages go deeper on each ladder.

What 500 images a month costs

For a marketer who needs about 500 standard square images a month, the bill ranges from $4.50 on FLUX 3 Image Klein to $24 on FLUX 3 Image, with most subscriptions landing in between. All figures below are our arithmetic on the prices in the tables above, monthly billing, October 2026.

Option Monthly cost for 500 images Catch
FLUX 3 Image Klein API $4.50 Needs a developer; smaller model
OpenAI GPT Image 2.5 API, medium $6.59 Output tokens only; prompt tokens add to it
Adobe Firefly Standard $9.99 Unlimited applies to Firefly's own standard models, not partner models
Midjourney Basic $10 Fast time covers about 1,000 standard images; no Relax mode
Stability AI Stable Image Core API $15 Needs a developer
Google Nano Banana 2.1 API $16.80 Needs a developer
Ideogram Plus $20 400 priority images, the other 100 in the slow queue
FLUX 3 Image API $24 Needs a developer

For a non-developer, Firefly Standard and Midjourney Basic are the cheapest ways to reach 500 images, although they buy very different looks, so the right pick depends on style before price. Developers pay less per image through an API, but that saving only exists if you are already building something that calls one. For the ranked picks, see our best AI image generators.

Free AI image generators: how common are they?

Free tiers are the norm in this category: 73% of the AI image generation tools on Toolradar offer one, against 27% that are strictly paid, as of October 21, 2026. Of the tools tracked, 106 are freemium, 19 are fully free, 45 are paid only and one is sold through sales, according to the Toolradar category statistics.

The free allowances among the leaders are small but real, enough to test a style before paying. Leonardo gives 150 tokens a day, Krea 100 compute units a day, and Stability AI's API starts with 25 free credits. Ideogram says eligible free accounts receive weekly credits and that "the amount may vary". The trade-off is usually rights and privacy as much as volume: Leonardo's FAQ says free-tier images can be used by Leonardo and other users, while paid images stay yours. Our best free AI image generators ranking compares the free plans side by side.

What these statistics do not tell you

Three limits keep these numbers honest:

  • Users are not image users. ChatGPT's and Gemini's audiences count everyone, not only people who make images, and no vendor splits them out.
  • Cumulative and weekly counts don't mix. Google's Nano Banana figure is a lifetime total while OpenAI's is a weekly rate, so setting them side by side as if they measured the same thing misleads.
  • Per-image costs move with settings. Resolution, quality level and model choice can raise the price of one image several times over on the same plan, so budget on the setting you will actually use.

How we compiled these statistics

We read each vendor's pricing page, help center or developer docs on October 21, 2026, and the usage figures come from the companies' own announcements and filings, dated where they appear. Per-image costs are our arithmetic on those published prices and conversion figures; we used each vendor's standard or medium setting at about 1 megapixel and monthly billing. Toolradar figures come from the directory's live category page on the same date. We used no third-party traffic estimates or market-size reports.
